This is why I think Joy Division is a really interesting band because they didn’t believe in franchising their albums or their music. All they cared about was making music.

I discovered the albums of Joy Division/New Order in the early 90s in used record stores in the Bible Belt of the USA. It was absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to find ANY information about these two bands. Their photos on the Low Life album are literally the ONLY images I saw of the bands for years. They were so utterly mysterious to me and it added SO much to the experience.

I'll be buried in my Joy Division garb. I remember hearing "Love will tear us apart", in 1980, I was 7. From then on, if you're a true fan, you'll never, ever get tired or burned out from listening to them. For me, my love for Joy Division only grows deeper🖤🎵🖤

My friend wore a joy division shirt not even knowing it was a joy division shirt and asked what i thought the lines meant and I said 'that's the cover of a joy division album' and he said, 'what's that' and I was astonished that he even bought the shirt because there are no joy division shirts.

There are loads of Joy Division t-shirts. I had one in about '83. They might not have sold them while Joy Division was around, but sure as hell did soon after. Joy Division were a truly great band but some (Hook in this video for sure) over do things. I doubt they are in the top 100 of most bootlegged acts.

@@jennyjohn704 I can tell you they didn't sell t-shirts while Joy Division was around and for a while during New Order. This was because their manager Rob Gretten was adamant that they don't do t-shirts. They did do pin badges but not t-shirts. They only officially started doing it in the late 90s or so.

In the 80s fans in Krautland made shirts and stickers by themselves. The mainstreamers didn't knew anything about J.D., the WDR boycotted J.D. because it were "sick, depressive, suicidal music"! Nowadays the same journalists claim to have always appreciated their records as masterpieces!

Il fatto stesso che il gruppo ha cambiato il nome da Joy Division in New Order è (anche se non lo ammettono,anzi sei pazzo a dire questo) un "offesa" ed un "dimenticare una volta per tutte" Ian Curtis !!! Come a dire "aveva stancato", !!! Da parte mia sono più che convinto che non vedevano l'ora che Ian la facesse finita....bassista specialmente !!! Ho questo sesto senso, è fino ad oggi non mi sono mai sbagliato....

They did make Joy Division badges and brought them to gigs to sell/handout. That’s not much different than a shirt in terms of promotion.

The non-promotion thing was a Factory gimmick and never actually true. Giving some their posters catalogue numbers doesn't stop them being promotion. Factory always had a very elitist vibe and the 'we don't do promotion' mantra was very central to that elitism. Of course, in practice this meant that most of their acts didn't get paid.

Here's a quote allegedly from Stephen Morris in the comments section of a Guardian article on it. Stephen Morris on the Mickey Mouse Unknown Pleasures T-shirt. "I was quite angry when I first saw it. No one asked us. They’re trading off the band and our album cover, but get away with it by apparently saying the design was ‘inspired’ by us. I don’t like the design at all. It’s horrible. I can’t imagine any Joy Division fans wearing it. Or anyone for that matter."

Band T-Shirts are ****. Rob was right. I can't stand the many hordes of Unknown Pleasures T-Shirts because a) The Fade b) They look cheap and most importantly c) The image is never scaled down, so it lacks the beauty of Saville's original design. Ditto 'Closer'.

Darren Hoggett. Yeah I get some people just wear because it looks cool. I remember someone from my school had a Rolling Stones shirt and I said to her “ do you listen to The Rolling Stones?” And she said no I just wear it.

zephyra. Yeah many kids today listen to pop and rap. But there’s a small percentage of kids who listen to rock.And I’m one of them. But there’s a really small percentage of kids who listen to Joy Division. Which is sad.

Am 37. Heard Blue Monday and liked it it was made by a band called New Order. Heard True Faith and it was the same band. I discovered Joy Division from New Order. Didn't know they were the same band. I like both. I like New Order because if their electronic music. Joy Division with Ian I feel could have been big. Ian was probably one of a kind and would have been bigger than Bono and U2 and be one of the top 3 or 4 bands of all time. New Order God bless was successful but in a different way.

Hold on. As much as I love the band (etc) and a great story, Bernard Sumner, you're telling me that in 1979 when you were skint, you could afford to buy a video recorder....which hadn't been released for very long....and watch 2001 A Space Oddity many many years before its release? I think you've started to believe your own stories too much my friend and fact is just a small part of the fictional element of your musical journey.

Nobody had been to the moon when '2001 Space Odyssey' was released in 1968. The official VCR was not release until 1980, but it had been broadcast on tv since '77. Video recorders had been available, new or for rent, from 1972, and by '79 second-hand VCR's and bootleg movies were easy to get hold of.
