Renowned mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato presents a series of three master classes focusing on opera arias. Here Ms. DiDonato coaches mezzo-soprano Miya Higashiyama with pianist Justina Lee on Mozart’s “Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio” from Le nozze di Figaro.

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato’s performances have been called “a model of singing in which all components of the art form-technique, sound, color, nuance, diction-come together in service to expression and eloquence” by The New York Times. The revered singer presents a series of three public master classes for young opera singers who were chosen from an international pool of applicants. I'm a pianist but Donato' ideas have given me so much . Even visually when she puts la venti,le herbe each one in a different space in air. I realized the energy and meaning of Cherubino 's character and the music , I felt enlivened and it mademe think about things in the Mozart piano Sonatas also things in Chopin Ballades, etudes and preludes .Donato is deep and has obviously thought deeply about music . This is what makes her performances so vivid and alive !!!

As a young opera singer, it is really hard to relax especially with a song like this, or in front of a big audience. My chorus teacher was just like her lol. He made it comfortable. And pronunciation is key especially with a fast song. I love this video and the advice.

I'm wondering if that has to do with some vocal tension or misplacement. She has some inconsistent vibrato and legato. That soprano brightness could be due to vocal fabrication.

@@davidalbro2009 She isn't as chesty as needed. Also she will never sound like old mezzos because they sang with chiaroscuro and that isn't taught nowadays. That's because the scuro part is achieved through dropping the larynx.

This girl (and most young singers today) needs to work on her posture. Her neck is sticking so far forward there’s no chance her instrument and breath can align properly to make a healthy pleasing sound. I love Joyce’s work but honestly I think it’s a little wasted when the basic foundations aren’t there.
