An info session for those interested in the artist open call for the 2024 Minnesota State Fair Joyful World Mural Park.
Tricia Heuring (Forecast Public Art) and Dudley Voigt (Arts A'Fair) will cover the opportunity details, review the application questions, work sample submission process, and timeline. Ask your questions and hear from 2022 and 2023 mural park artists Noah Lawrence-Holder and Juliette Perine Myers, who will share their experiences at the Fair.
-------
The Minnesota State Fair and Forecast are holding an open call for four muralists to add four new murals to the 2024 Joyful World Mural Park ( bit.ly/JoyfulMuralPark ). Artists must be 18+ and reside in the state of Minnesota. Artists from outside the metro area and greater Minnesota are encouraged to apply. Each selected artist will receive a stipend of $4,500 (includes materials). Artists will be provided with parking, Fair access, and food vouchers. Applications due by 8:00pm CDT, June 17.
Since 2021, the Minnesota State Fair has presented the Joyful World Mural Park in partnership with Forecast Public Art and with support from the Minnesota State Fair Foundation. During the 12 days of the Fair, visual artists have created murals on-site, enlivening a new green space with public art and giving Fair visitors an opportunity to watch a wide range of artists work in a variety of styles. Previous years’ murals are also a seasonal attraction on the fairgrounds - on view during the summer around the fairgrounds before returning to the mural park location for the duration of the Fair.

ARTIST PANELISTS
Noah Lawrence-Holder is a Black, nonbinary artist from Madison, Wisconsin, now based in Minnesota's Twin Cities. Their work centers around racial justice, afro-futurism, intersectionality, and gender identity. They have featured work on walls and in gallery shows across Minneapolis and beyond.
Juliette Perine Myers is a painter, muralist, and mosaic artist based out of South Minneapolis. Juliette strongly values the representation of different identities and often incorporates her Chinese heritage or queer identity into the artwork. She likes to use symbols or motifs in the form of cultural mythology, or specific species of native flora and fauna. The majority of her work has been collaborative and rooted in uplifting community. She has worked with mosaic artist Lori Greene to create numerous mosaic murals and sculptures with the help of other assistants and community volunteers and helped form the activist-based mural collective, Creatives After Curfew, following the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

CHAT QUESTIONS / COMMENTS
Kira: What days are the busiest days of the fair?
Dudley Voigt: Weekends are usually busier. The Saturday of Labor Day Weekend is often the busiest day of the whole thing. Keep in mind that rain or extreme heat (or cold, lol) can impact attendance.
Jessica McKeever: What kind of materials do you prefer to work with? I see a lot of brush painting? Is spray painting allowed?
Dudley Voigt: Yes, some artists have used aerosol
Jessica McKeever: Ok great. Just wasn’t sure with the crowd around
Kira: Does the art from previous years stay in the art park?
Dudley Voigt: It gets put away for winter, but yes previous murals will all return to the park for the Fair.
Xena: For the question, “Why would you like to paint at the fair?” Is there a type of answer you’re looking for?
Dudley Voigt: Of course, you can send someone to load in on your behalf if you can’t make it
iPad: How many judges are there?
Dudley Voigt: 6
iPad: Reacted to "6" with 👌
Xena: Thank you so much you all!
iPad: Are the murals primed or do we need to do it?
Dudley Voigt: You can have us prime them with 1 color if you choose
iPad: Replying to "You can have us prim…"
Thanks
iPad: Have you ever had someone who didn’t finish?
iPad: Thanks
