Hamilkar Barkas' Video on the L/48 version: • "JP IV Buddy Build" - ...
This video is a post-build review of Dragon 6369. We will explore the instruction errors, fit issues, and accuracy corrections I discovered while building the kit. The modifications I made to this kit to model the L/70 variant will also be covered.
This is also my first video in my Buddy Build with Hamilkar Barkas where we will both build this kit and an sdkfz 250 in some dioramas.
Summary:
I finished this kit in about 5 days. Very nice build with no major fit issues, apart from the L/48 gun. Only a few minor instruction errors which I cover in the video.
I solved the issue with the L/48 gun by simply using extra parts in the kit to make an L/70 variant. For a guide on fixing the L/48, check out Hamilkar Barkas' video on the same kit.
I used a few parts from an Aber PE set to add some extra detail to the fender supports, tool clamps, and front mudguards. This PE is not required. I also used an Aber metal barrel, but there is a plastic L/70 in the kit so it's also not required.
DS rubber tracks were replaced with aftermarket ones from Heavy Hobby. I don't like DS and they can degrade over time after exposure to enamel thinner during weathering.

DISCLAIMER: I am not paid to promote any specific products or brands; I just use the products I find work best for me through my experiences. There is no reason for me to promote a bad product, as then I would not enjoy using it, not like the result on my model, and not be proud of publicizing it in a video. There's also no point in me doing this to keep up relations with a company if the only benefit would be getting more of the same products that I didn't like. I have not used every product out there, but from what I have used, I keep using the products I like, and that's why I use them in my videos. You can use whatever other products you would like to and you can feel that they are better - that is your opinion, and is perfectly fine by me, thus I hope that feeling is reciprocated.

That was a great start! I hope our videos can be a guide for all the modellers out there who want to build this kit and might wonder how to solve some of its problems. Now, on to the next component of this project, it is rather a diorama buddy build afterall :)

What makes your channel unique is your encyclopedic knowledge of the various details that go into a specific version of a tank - from clamp types, to the length of an attachment bar or the location of the fire estinguisher. Few other modellers on YT display such knowledge, and I frankly would dread to have any of my German stuff judged by you at some model competition. Not to mention that Dragon scares me, and I still have to takle one of their kits after many years in the hobby... I think I'd rather scratchbuild before buying Dragon, but at some point I'll give them a go. Thanks for the great content and please keep it up!

Great vid Evan, thank you. It's nice to have details / kit part options explained between variants - it never occurred to me that one could make the L/70 version from this kit!

Evan, enjoyed this review build. Lots of information on converting to the L70. I’ve got this exact kit in the build pile. I’ll have to watch Hamikar’s L48 build and see which version I want to do. I do tend to lean towards the long barrel guns. Thanks for putting this out…

Nice Work Evan. I was considering doing the L/70 out of this kit, and using the spare L/48 parts to improve on the older Dragon/ Gunze L/48 which has no Zimmerit. any bit I can avoid doing zimm on is a bonus.

Out of the two the L48 and the L70 i prefer the L70 as it has the longer gun barrel. It just looks more in proportion . Your details with the tool clamps i found really interesting . Im really excited to see both build projects completed, its going to be a great series of videos 👍
@BrailleScale

Funny you mentioned this, I am totally the opposite! Haha I'm a fan of the L48's aesthetic simply because I feel like the L70 protrudes so far forward of the glacis plate. I feel like it would be awkward to maneuver and the L48 can take up a smaller display base. Thankfully for us hobbyists the Germans were able to produce so many variants of their extensive vehicle line up to keep us all happy with options haha 😁 cheers!
@robertvoss6145
@robertvoss6145 Жыл бұрын
@@BrailleScale i totally understand what you're saying and from a maneuvering perspective i agree with you, but as an ambush vehicle or tank hunter the L70 is perfectly designed. With it's low silhouette and high velocity gun , perfect for lying in wait , hidden from view firing on an unsuspecting advancing allied column 😉

Nice build! Quick note regarding the box on the engine deck, the slanted version was earlier and got replaced with the straight version in mid-1944. I suppose your build falls into the transitional period and could have both, but later Jagdpanzers would all have the straight one.

Awesome, as is the norm for you!👍👍 But, dammit, you & Hamilkar have me wanting to build BOTH versions of the Jagdpanzer IV with zimmerit! lol😁(and I think I have the Tamiya non-zimmerit version in my stash...lol...😂...I guess some of the unused Dragon parts could be added to the Tamiya kit to enhance various details? lol)

Great video - an interesting comparison with Michael. The tracks didn't fit the return rollers? Are the guide horns too thick? Looking forward to the next videos.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 Жыл бұрын
Hey Stevie! Yeah, the Heavy Hobby tracks just didn't quite seem to fit there. They fit StuG return rollers, but the Pz IV ones are much tighter. I think I will put the tracks from the RFM StuG on this kit, and then save these ones for a future StuG with Zimmerit 😊
@stevemercer952

Very nice video and a very nice build of an interesting vehicle. Couple of questions. You said you didn't like the way the laser printed tracks fitted. Will you just remove a link or two or use another brand? Also, I think it was usual on the L/70 to have the front bogie on each side fitted with solid steel wheels to compensate for the increased weight of the gun. This wasn't the case with the L/48 vehicle so wasn't included in the kit. Is this somthing you will come back to? Big fan of your very comprehensive videos I'm looking forward to the next one!
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 Жыл бұрын
Hello Steve. With the tracks, it was not an issue of the length of the whole track run, but rather the thickness of the guide horns on each link. They're a little overly thick and so they didn't fit nicely between the tight Pz IV steel return rollers. I will save these tracks so use on a future StuG III since they fit that vehicle. As for the steel road wheels in the first bogey, you are correct for later vehicles. But this one still has Zimmerit, so it still has all rubber wheels since it's a very early L/70. 😊

Great video. I've started building Dragon's 6978 kit. I bought some type 7 tracks from T-Rex but they don't fit! Do you know which Panzer IV track type get for my kit? It a Nov 1944 production.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 10 ай бұрын
That is strange. That vehicle should use Type 7 tracks (I have the same kit). How do the tracks not fit...are they too narrow? Or is each link too short?
@DavidSmith-bd7he

@@Panzermeister36The Dragon drive sprocket did not fit as good as you showed in your video. Ha. So it was too wide for the T-Rex tracks.
