That's our Freddie, outrageous to the last. There will never be anyone like him. I met him a couple of times at Harpoon Louis (later Harpo's and Banana Max). We lost a national treasure when he passed away in 1991. Gone, but NEVER forgotten ☹️💞

For me, the passing of Freddie Mercury was one of those events where you will never forget where you were when you heard the news. For me I was driving along whitehorse road in Croydon, listening to Capitol Radio on my way to work, I was just totally stunned when the news was announced. The world lost one of the greatest musicians when Freddie left us.

@@100SteveB I only ever cried for Lennon, Freddie & Jackson.. 3 musical greats that could never be replaced. It was known that Freddie had aids, long before he told everyone. His last videos with the band, it was so obvious. He is still missed by us all but his memory lives on. Such a great & special Human being. 👍🇬🇧

I'm an old 70 (young at heart) lady and it is thrilling to watch a youngster, such as yourself, listen and enjoy the type of music we/I used to love in our/my young days too! They always give me chills and it's such a pleasure watching and enjoying vicariously through your young eyes. You have so much to look forward to. Freddy was a showman and his clothes were part of his shows! TFS and have a great week!

I’m so here for more Queen. Do keep in mind when watching them live that it is really, LIVE! No auto tune, no other fancy digitalisation (wasn’t a thing then). Just four hugely talented musicians who became as close as brothers. There is a reason why people from all musical genre’s still love Queen and still miss Freddie 30 years after his passing. Dive into their amazing and diverse catalogue of music, meet all the wonderful Queen followers and discover the story of the incomparable Freddie Mercury.

Glad you enjoyed it. As other have said, you really should react to the live version from Montreal in 1981. It blows the studio version out of the water. Queen are very much a live band and their live versions are almost always better than the studio versions.
@Retrospective.
@Retrospective. 2 жыл бұрын
Usually i would agree, but the live version misses out on all the harmonies, the things that make this song really great. In my opinion, this version, blows the live 81 version out of the water, i would much rather take the studio version, and anyway, this is the first way we all heard it.

@Improve Sheffield Totally disagree with that but it is subjective. Like most Queen tracks this is bathed in multiple layers of harmony so for me these types of songs always sounded empty by comparison. A song like tie your mother down is fine from studio to stage. The other thing is his voice that suffered with the tour schedule, his soft falsetto is missing so those Freddie isms on vinyl are lost live.

@1944bwa
@1944bwa 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the extra teeth and overbite did not make a difference in his voice…. go online and look at the studies that have been done that disprove it. But, it is true that Freddie wouldn’t have his teeth fixed because he believed it. What actually helped was his ability to use “false vocal cords”. I have read this is something that most opera singers struggle to do, but it was natural for Freddie.

The Prophet's Song is one of those hidden gems that's only for the advanced Queen fan. It's a go to for very existential problems for me, and has been for over 30 years. Highly recommend giving it at least one listen -- AND -- give yourself permission to hate it at first. But if you hear it once, you will invariably end up making your way back to it later when the mood is right and the song becomes cathartic. Good recco, @Steve!

Freddie saw his role on stage as grabbing the attention of the audience and holding them in his hand the whole time, so he chose to be a bit outrageous and flamboyant which became his on stage persona. Off stage, he was a very different character, generous, hard working, kind, and a loyal friend.

The ‘strange’ stage outfit - bear in mind this was 50 years ago - there were no computer graphics so all manual effects and lighting, groups made up for this with elaborate stage outfits. ( take a look at David Bowie or Elton John from the same period - also both British Musicians btw)

Queen are amazing, but one of the reasons why you might be finding their music so visceral is because there's no autotune. They even apply autotune and/or pitch correction to amazing vocalists these days, sometimes without their knowledge, and what it does is remove all the tiny flaws in the human voice which give a performance that something special - things sound over-produced and less moving than they would have had they been left alone. Here's two quite long but very interesting videos about autotune and how it is a huge disservice to many of the great vocalists around today. He uses Freddy Mercury as one of his examples. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZ2Rd7Fk1NvOiH0.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/haibaqWfrqeVYpc.html

If you love this you must watch Barcelona. It's Freddie living his dream and amazing vocals from the master. If you want a funny video I want to break free is the one. As to Freddie's tight costume it was back in the days of what we call 70's glam rock where as we say "anything goes". Checkout David Bowie singing Star man dressed as alter ego Ziggy stardust to understand those times. Another great band you can checkout is ELO start with Mr Blue Sky. You will have heard some of their music too👍

See, Joel, I told you a couple of times that this is one of Queen's best songs and your reaction to it comes as nothing of a surprise to me. It also shows how versatile Freddie was during his lifetime in that he could sing everything from heavy rock, onto soul, ballads and even opera. The daftest part about it was that he never formally trained as a singer and actually studied Art and Design at Ealing College of Art in the 1960's prior to forming Queen. Those same studies enhanced his natural showmanship and theatricality and he put them to excellent use onstage - his four octave vocal range was part of his DNA and was obviously a bonus for everyone, wasn't it? By the way, you should also watch and possibly react to George Michael's cover version of this song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert after Freddie's death when George sings along with the rest of Queen as well as a small gospel choir....it's also fantastic and is a fitting tribute to Freddie's musical genius. In fact as we've all seen you just added it to your Spotify playlist and if you watch and react to George Michael's cover of it you might want to add that to the same playlist on there purely for comparison between the two versions.

I 1st heard this song in Happy Feet. Didn't realise it was a Queen song at 1st but when I did I thought another reason to love Queen. This version is good but a great version to listen to is a live concert in Montreal.

@@lucie4185 I'll be honest and say something a little shocking, I don't like all of Queens song. Some like White Queen are just a little slow paced for my taste. There are are so many I do like though and are actually some of my all time favourite songs.

In the late 70s, Freddie declared this to be his favourite song-- even over Bohemian Rhapsody --that he had written, and the one he was most proud about.

In 1964, when I was thirteen, the Beatles exploded in America and changed rock music forever. The next three plus decades witnessed innumerable great bands producing songs and albums. A sampling of Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Bee Gees, the Four Seasons, David Bowie and Simon and Garfunkel, to name but a few, would expand your musical knowledge to see just how rich and varied those thirty plus years were in musical history. Those of us who were around then were extremely fortunate, but it all is still available to your generation to discover and appreciate. This is not just a rabbit hole, but a whole universe to explore.

I saw Queen in 1986, I was 20 years old, Freddie walked on stage with a crown on )) ..... there was no one like Freddie until there was Freddie .... there has been no one like Freddie since he sadly left us. In the moment of watching him everyone kind of knew, he was uniquely special which made the love for him all the more wonderful. I have never heard a single person say something remotely negative about Freddie. In sport .... the equivalent to Freddie was Mohammad Ali. With Ali, there was no one like him before or since. The world is a lesser place without such humans.

Wants to Live Forever, Only The Good Die Young. White Queen, Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race, And The ultimate dis songs: Death On Two Legs. Barcelona, Freddie and the lads have over three hundred songs in their discography you won’t run out any time soon. Roger and Freddie actually have an almost identical range the biggest differences being Freddie and his control over his false vocal chords and Roger who actually could hit notes in his falsetto that were so high as to nearly be whistle range.

Hi Joel, Glad you liked it and thanks for your great channel. Have a look at the songs he did with one of the greatest opera singers ever, Montserrat Caballe, for the Barcelona Olympics. One is called Barcelona, the other How Can I Go On. Quite sad as they say he knew he wasn’t long to live and this was his last performance before he died. There is a fantastic interview with Monty Caballe talking about Freddie and how she reacted to him telling her about his HIV. Both were amazing beautiful people.
