The layers of sends for all the reverbs and delays is the part that I could spend an hour just seeing how people do it.

You suggested sharing additional tips... I very often place an EQ with low pass and high pass filtering before my reverbs to avoid sending unwanted frequencies into the reverb. Alternately, you could place a de-esser to knock out those "spitty" moments. In Ableton, I have an effects rack with a full pass path and a parallel reverb with resonant high and low pass filters with out of sync modulation on each filter. This creates a shifting source into the reverb. It's great for static drum and percussion samples and gives you a varied space behind the source. Try phasers, choruses, etc.... One more.. try putting a saturator and compressor before the reverb or delay to simulate the soft clipping/limiter circuits in old rack units. I'm a big fan of the Deltalab Effectrons and Alesis MidiVerb 2. They have a great way of breaking up or getting brighter when you hit them harder, this method gives you some of that. Send less and the effect is darker/cleaner, send more and it's brighter/dirtier.

A great thing Jon did that he didn't point out: sometimes the delay isn't (only) in the effect, but the arrange/performance of something IS the delay. The lead voice sang "on and on", but then the back vocals sang "on and on and on and on and on and on" which is basically just building in the concept of delay straight into the composition itself!

Great point. Also glad he pointed out the use of an analog style delay. Logic’s delays tend to be very digital, so looking for better options. The delay designer can duck out nicely but it’s a bit tedious. Some days it’s fun to control the pan, filter, and volume of each delay, but most days I prefer turning knobs.

This was fantastic! Loved the example of sending delays to the opposite side when choosing to hard-pan a track. I’ve read that that is the way to do it, but had never seen the idea applied. Also loved the in depth description of each reverb/delay and how you are using it.

Embrace that hard pan, my friend! Love panning stuff +/-100. Have not used the Softube algo verb yet, I have been in love with the Ocean Way UA plug for the cohesive room stuff. Also adore "playing" my hardware boxes during mix, moving things slightly so the modulation is less reliable, more real world/random. Works especially well with OTO BIM delay.

Great tutorial, lots of great insights and useful info. We're going to share this with student from our apprenticeship program . I just wish you didn't have to make the title "Why your REVERBS & DELAYS sound AMATEUR!", but I suppose it helps get the video more views. In thinking about this excellent video, you don't say at all about why other people sound amateur, you just present a bunch of really cool reverb and delay techniques.

This video is fantastic! I often struggle with excessive reverb and harshness in my mixes. These tips are definitely worth trying out. On an unrelated note, I was wondering if you could recommend a display monitor that would be a good match for my 2017 iMac with 5K Retina display. I recently purchased a Mac studio and I'm having difficulty finding a suitable monitor. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

You brushed over one little detail where you said that you didn't want any pre-delay on your guitar track because you wanted more togetherness (hugely paraphrased). I usually default to some pre-delay on all my verbs. I probably reach for that little knob pretty quick on every reverb plugin I put on a track. I tend to like it, but could it be contributing to more mud issues in a mix? Also: Curse you for writing such a catchy ballad. It's stuck in my head. I don't even like ballads and I've been singing "Reverb, and Delay" around the house all morning. My kids think I'm crazy and my wife is begging me to shut up. Thanks.
@DeltaWhiskeyBravo13579
@DeltaWhiskeyBravo13579 Жыл бұрын
Just like other effects, pre-delay or most other settings, it can likely depend on the track and overall mix composition. What I think I'm trying to say is one exact setting isn't always what to use. Modify, like bending it a bit from x, to that specific sound and vibe you're after in specific guitar, vocal, piano, etc.
