I don't know, man... By making an extra inlet for cool air, they changed the airflow. I can imagine this having an effect on the SSD temperature and the VRM's that are under the heat shield, since there is less airflow now.

I have the older version of this shell and recently finally installed it. First thing i notice is the deck runs hotter even on windows, the fan just runs louder than usual, and I encounter screen freeze once. After watching this video i notice they did cut some of the thermal pad away which I figure the old thermal pad must be blocking some air flow to internal component. I did the same thermal pad cut like the v2 version, and immediately notice deck not running as loud, also the backplate no longer crazy hot

It's a dramatic improvement from the original and they definitely focused on air flow for both intake areas. Just waiting on mine it's in the mail 😢 (update) just got it finally after a nail bitting wait and it looks awesome definitely allows for better air flow and you can notice they put a screen over the vent cover so huge chunks of debris can't get sucked into the decks fan way better fit then the original. Good to see the did a great job a revising the original back cover

well after some time gotta update my review with some sad info. The vent is a cool design but as I was playing starfield I noticed the screen above the APU was cooking I did everything I could to bring down the screen temp what eventually helped was switching back to the original transparent back plate and removing the thermal pads. One review is correct had vavle designed the deck to run a certain way they would have installed different vents. The vents designed for the steam deck are perfect for the airflow it needs jsaux obviously didn't measure screen temp when designing this and it's pretty much a scam. If you want cooler Temps when gaming on the deck with a modern triple A game turn off valves fan curve setting to allow the fan to run at maximum speed I noticed once I did that the screen was no longer becoming hot. Was a cool design but someone definitely wasn't putting a temp gun to the screen when they developed the vents. Sadly I got sucked into how nice it looked and not practicality. So yep I'd recommend covering the fan vents with some duct tape and tossing out the thermal pad and again if you're playing demanding games turn off the vavle fan settings keeps the screen cooler and Temps really aren't that different.

Still wish they would make these and the previous backplates in a solid black to match the Steam Deck, I love the idea, but don't love that 90's see thru plastic aesthetic. Aside from that my one concern would be on the SSD thermals since I know Valve said the reason they designed in the way they did was to help cool the SSD, this though would almost entirely remove airflow from over the SSD, and I do remember when Linus Tech Tips had the very early preview at Valve he brought a FLIR camera and there was quite a bit of heat coming from the SSD/modem area.

Hi Shane, thanks for the video, I do have some concerns, which may be repeating what others have said, Gamers Nexus did a test where they removed the backplate entirely and it lowered the SoC temperature, but as a result of no backplate, there wasn't air directed to other important components, like the charging circuit, and that resulted in it getting hotter. I don't know if you have the equipment to test for these concerns, it was getting quite hot so it's worth at least being aware of.
@cratervanawesome
@cratervanawesome 8 ай бұрын
I wouldn't expect this to be a huge problem. The fan doesn't run when the deck is plugged in charging with the screen off, which at least for me is how it charges 99% of the time. So during charging not in use there should be no difference. If you're plugged in going full throttle in a demanding game it might affect it, but if the other components that produce heat are getting it out of the case quicker, then the charging circuit should in theory again be unaffected in any major way.

Subbed and liked as well 😁 I have a chinese knockoff backplate with extra vent holes for the vrm's and it is keeping cool with both apu and vrm's. I am curious to see if this held up compared to the usual user that their stock back plate burns their vrm's out naturally. Basically 1/3 people it happened to for stock.

But the question here is, why didn't Valve themselves put holes directly on top of the fan? I'm pretty sure they have tons of people working on the design, and I highly doubt this is a design oversight. So, why didn't Valve just put on a couple of vents/holes directly on top of the fan? Maybe there's a reason for that.

I was hoping that you showed the before and after with the default fan curve under load to see if the RPM's were lower overall = less fan noise.
@Eskoxo
@Eskoxo 11 ай бұрын
there is a reason valve did not put vents right over the top of the fan they need that airflow to go over other components from where the actual vents are at this design will increase temps there with no airflow. Better design would be like the old one but use actual slightly thicker copper with ridges and a much smaller high quality thermal pad that only covers the apu to leave as much space under there.

@@scaryifliteral I think it would require you to measure temps for other components such as VRM power delivery SSD temp, micro SD temps. The only temps measured here is the CPU. There are lots of other components that rely on some cooling to function properly and they all sit under the backplate which now receives less airflow.

while the apu temperature is better because the heatsink which is after the cooling fan is getting fresh air from the new vent holes it does reduce internal air flow over the ssd and voltage regulation area of the board and i am worried about that causing issues with longevity.

Yeah but it also means, over time, the fan will have become more dusty and you'll need to remove it and open it from time to time to clean it so the fan doesn't lose efficiency. Happened with a win600 i had, within 3 months the fan was already suffering from all the dirt/dust inside it. Now i understand why they opt for the enclosed "style".

I think that will be a minimal problem. You may have to pop it apart once a year for a quick clean. Not too bad for the trade off of cooler temps. If you're worried about consequences over time from use I would be more concerned about heat than dust
@snowmean1
@snowmean1 11 ай бұрын
That's unavoidable in any case because the original grill doesn't actually filter any dust in the air. You will collect more dust simply because of the better air flow which is exactly what we want.

As the others have already pointed out, this back plate design actually hurts the device. The original design relies on airflow over the ram chips, charger IC and other mobo ICs. With this back plate the air has a direct path to the fan, therefore bypassing other areas, which will overheat, reducing their lifespan. And the observed lower temps on the SoC is bad as well because the system will reduce the fan speed, chocking the mobo components even more.

unlike the original back plate... the changed airflow should be fine. WHY? Because the heat from the board that was gettin transferred to the air flowing is instead getting transferred to the aluminum plate. EVEN if it is covered with plastic now, the increased surface area of that metal plate that dissipates that heat onto the plastic then the environment will make up for whats supposed to be the board plate in contact with flowing air with the original back plate... VRMs are gonna be fine unlike what gamers nexus test show. WHY? same reason as above... another point is that there are more places where the board dissipates heat rather than the fan alone edit: added "environment"
