I had this setup for a week found that it impacts the internal fans after a long play session. What I found is most reviews only show the first 10 minutes or less of gaming. Once you go to 20+ minutes there is no difference or it actually ran 5 to 10 degrees hotter. I kept the case but removed the thermal pad and peltier cooler.

The other day I set my fans to a set speed and let a game idle for about half an hour. Attached the fan and let it sit and the temps did not move at all. Just isn't a good product lol.

Without seeing the methodology, anyone seeing lowering of temps with this case probably aren't thermally saturating it before actually testing temps.

i have one of those peltier cooler fans that i use for my fold 3 when i'm gaming, the steam deck might not be able to supply anough power to feed the cooler and the fan, they ussually pull between 10-20 watts of power and they really cool the phone down, maybe not the steam deck because of the higher TDP over the cooling power of the peltier cooler, it might work if they made higher power ones that you could use with a PD wall charger. exelent video as always Shane!

because when the external fan cool the SD down, the first thing will happen is the internal fan will slow down. that why the tempeture drop slowly. To test exactly you need to keep the internal fan speed stay the same. this way you'll see the benefit more in internal fan speed (RPM).

I actually did this yesterday after installing Windows using steam deck tools. I even filmed a bit hoping I'd see a tiny difference, but I didn't. It's just not doing anything for me. I even took the thing apart and replaced their thermal pads with good paste to see if that was the issue lol.

That fan is a semi conductor that will frost over with no load. It would work alot better if it made direct contact with the metal plate of the deck rather than the magnetic plate it came with. Also check as I've seen them have a 50% and 100%

Im so used to my laptop fans that the steam deck fan at 7k rpm is really nothing lol. Especially since my laptop is on an IETS gt500 which is almost 2 times louder than my laptop and the deck combined. My deck never goes into the 70s and its still stock for now.

I'm using this same config and i definitely recommend it. when its docked or in handheld i use this and its amazing how well it helps. If you are also tinkering with the amount of wattage and other settings you can get temps down really well. For cyberpunk 2077 at 9-10 watts and fsr2 running with a mix of low and medium settings minus a few high setting for color and lighting it does really well. on average i can get 2.5-3.5 hours off a max battery playing the game.

I bought this because it's the only backplate that comes in purple. The thermal block doesn't really help my performance or battery life. It does delay how long before the internal fan kicks on. Im wondering what would happen if i had a usb fan blowing air onto the plate while docked.

You should try the fan over the vents. Just like PC case fans, fans are designed for airflow to pull out the heat. Not sure why they designed it to dissipate the heat.

FYI JSAux has released a revised version of this backplate, which extends the aluminum down to the rear vent and includes _another_ vent right on top of the APU fan to reduce how much heat is getting to the aluminum (so it doesn't burn you quite so easily and the other components stay cooler). It sounds like they adjusted the thermal pad to not screw with airflow as much as well? Not as sure about that though...

Cutting off a 4th of the thermal pad does indeed keep air flow because the thermal pad closes off a heat flow path. Cutting that small side off fixes that issue and I bet that fan will make a HUGE difference that way.

Also learn that this back case , alters the air movement inside the steamdeck , which alters the temperature of the charging circuit. It cools the CPU but all the other components are at higher temps. Also your hangs are at risk with temps over 80C.
@noonebeer
@noonebeer Жыл бұрын
I just got one yesterday. It's a good idea, but the problem is that the Jsaux back plate's clips aren't aligned with the Steam Deck's OEM case. This is obvious when you hold the OEM backplate with the Jsaux one. What happens is that you will have a large gap in either the top right or top left because the back plate won't snap due to the bad positioning of the clips. Even if the clips lined up, you still need to cut out a small part of the thermal putty on the left. Why? Because if you don't, you'll be blocking the small air channel to the OEM fan. Not a big deal, and it's an easy fix. I wish that they had better QA because i really like the idea of the metal plate. I was hoping that Jsaux was another Anker or DJI. It's not.
@scaryifliteral
@scaryifliteral Жыл бұрын
You're saying the pad is blocking your fan? I can't say I have a large gap anywhere either. Maybe 1mm on the side with the thermal pad? Maybe not even that large lol.
@noonebeer
@noonebeer Жыл бұрын
@@scaryifliteral no, it’s blocking air flow from the metal sink that’s to the left of the fan. It’s a very subtle L shaped groove. I didn’t even know what it was until someone pointed it out
@disasterincarnate
@disasterincarnate Жыл бұрын
@@noonebeer yup, the L shaped indentation on the outside of the backplate is a small channel for air to flow, the thermal pad by default covers up part of the channel blocking or at least making airflow harder to circulate, your "temp stats" will still look great but thats for GPU/CPU, the stuff that ends up overheating is your IC Controller chip, your NVME SSD and everything else under the backplates meshed airvent at the bottom. You need clearer air circulation for those chips specifically as the fan "sucks" air through the meshed vent and around that indented air channel and around to the fan which then expels the hot air.

As I said in this video, unless you're thermal throttling (you shouldn't be) there isn't a huge benefit to this as far as I can tell. You could say lower temps are better for the battery and it's possible that some games might run ever so slightly better, but by and large this is just for fun.
@sandrahiltz
@sandrahiltz Жыл бұрын
While likely you wouldn't see performance differences unless you are playing it in a hot environment, it will lower the fan RPM which will make the fan quieter, and will actually help slightly with battery life as the faster the fan spins the more power it uses.
