Today we have part one of a two part Combat Story with Mike Edwards, a former special operations soldier and leader with 18 combat deployments with the Ranger Regiment, Regimental Reconnaissance Company (RRC), and as part of the Omega Program where JSOC and CIA personnel were paired together to form lethal operational units downrange.
Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more!
The Washington Post described the Omega Program as “units comprising CIA personnel and troops with JSOC…using co-mingled bases in Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen” and “mostly designed against specific high-value targets.”
In this first interview, we dive into Mike’s entry into the military as an 11M and his first round of deployments with Ranger Regiment post-9/11, including earning what is often referred to as the mustard stain on his jump wings after a static line jump to seize an airfield at the outset of the Iraq war (he ends up very much like Shrek did on his first combat jump!). We dig into hunting the deck of cards, earning an EIB, then CIB, losing friends to a female suicide bomber, and then the intense operation in which Mike was awarded a Purple Heart and Silver Star.
Stay tuned for part two with Mike where we dive into some of Mike’s more intense combat experiences, low vis tactical work, and fighting in Omega and RRC.
Special thanks to our brothers Jack, Dave, and Dee at the Team House for introducing us to Mike! And with that, please enjoy this first episode with Mike Edwards.

When he's talking about the pregnant woman in the VBIED, that killed those Rangers, one of the others killed was named Ryan Long. Long was my brother's best friend at the time, as he was also in the same A Co. 3rd Batt with him. One of the hardest things he's said he had to do in his whole life was attend Long's funeral and comfort his mother. Long was only 21 when he died. My brother still regularly talks to Long's mom on Ryan's birthday and over holidays and has always worn a memorial bracelet commemorating Long since 2003. Long was pulled back to checkpoint duty because he was scheduled to come home just a month after his death, and it was considered a safer place for him to be while he waited out his remaining days on deployment. The woman who jumped out of the car said she was in distress and Rippetoe and Long, being great guys, came running out to help her. The evil it takes to use a pregnant woman as bait to kill Americans is both unfathomable and yet very real. The ripple effect of that act has wounded and destroyed the psyches of many people close to Ryan. If you have any friends or family in the military, always say you love them when talk to them overseas, as something like this can happen quickly, and you may never have the chance to speak with or see them again.

Mike, you don’t know me and I don’t know you but I remember you fairly well from Casey. My first duty station was with C/503rd winter 00-01. Fairly similar interests on installation I guess, I was scrolling shorts and a clip of this interview popped up. Your voice man, instantly I had to find this full interview to figure it our. I clearly remember you spotting me at the main gym multiple times throughout my tour their as well as the Fitness’s Contests. Seems our paths would cross again shortly after that tour. I was with 1/24 in Mosul 04-05 with then LTC Kurila on FOB Marez and involved with the whole Stryker/loan a crew. So much of how you describe things in Iraq especially the earlier stages of the war bring up some crazy memories. Good to see someone is out telling good stories from that I can relate to.

Brother, i highly recommend redoing your into.. I am 100% behind what you do and think your Legacy is amazing. However, you are NOT interviewing “some” of the best,, you are ABSOLUTELY interviewing THE BEST. I haven’t seen as many stories of such Warriors who run into the gates of hell without a weapon, over a mine field with NO care for his life putting others before him and NOT get the MOH? A cheesy NAM? To give it perspective, I received a NAM for rehabbing a work space on my ship,, basically sanding, priming and painting.. total BS what the core did to their Marines. You gave me such a powerful reminder that the uppers care not for the galant actions committed by their Marines happens on such an epic scale. They need to fix that and reissue MOH’s for they meet the criteria beyond contestation. Thank you for what you do.

50:00…. I was a Marine Rifleman in the invasion when that happened and WE heard about it, because it was the first known VBIED ever in Iraq. Sadly the amount of civilian vehicles we lit up at checkpoints went WAY up because it was a complete mindset change toward civilians and their vehicles. A lot of them were unfortunately killed from there on out all the way to Baghdad.

Anyone know of a vid or pod on here that goes into Extortion 17? Lost my good friend of 10 years that night and all the research I keep looking and it’s a night and day difference on this video’s exposure on KZfaq and the media’s suppressed coverage on this incident. Thanks

Personally, I believe the NCOIC may have disliked Mike for certain reasons but also saw something in him that set him a part from the others and wanted to truly test him. If so, he was right about Edwards! What a solid effing dude!

Great story teller! Amazing career. Took a round about path though. Doesn't this guy look like / sound like Anson Mount from " Hell on Wheels " and " Star Trek SNW Strange New Worlds " uncanny. 😊

I had a professor of philosophy that I consider the closest thing I was able to have as a mentor in undergrad. Not only did he look like Mike but he had the exact same cadence, intonation, accent, etc.. That professor was from, I think, Georgia but studied at UC Santa Cruz. I'm from Philly, so I have something of a regional accent myself and know that accents from nearby places can be subtly different. I love his and Mike's accent, they are exotic albeit domestic and intellectual to me. I'm really curious, can somebody give me specific stats on Mike's accent? Is it distinctly Santa Cruz? Is his also an interstate accent? It's definitely West Coast right? I'm commenting after watching a short but this video is queued up for later.

He was born in good ole Selma, Alabama. He was pretty much raised in the south his whole life. I have a really and country accent. I totally understand your thoughts on his accent lol. It got me too when we first met I thought he was from Cali 😂
