Well it has been a very long tome since we have done a Ford engine build on the channel. And since this 64 Galaxie County Sedan station wagon came from the factory with a 289 Windsor small block ford then what better engine to put back in it than another SBF. Unfortunately despite trying to rebuild the original engine it ended up not being salvageable and we had to switch to a 5.0 HO that I already had pulled out of the red Fairmont Futura. In this engine build we are going to upgrade the valve train with a cam, lifters, pushrods, springs, retainer, locks, and timing chain from Comp Cams. A Wieand intake manifold from a fan, Mr. Gasket finned aluminum valve covers, Scott Drake pulleys, and a Holley carburetor. I hope you like the build and stay tuned to see this thing running in the wagon in the next video!
Here is a list of all the parts used in this build.
35-421-8 Comp hydraulic roller cam
986-16 Comp double valve spring
89311-16 Comp Evolution lifters
740-16 Comp retainers available at compcams.com
2135 Comp double roller timing chain
611-16 Comp locks
503-16 Comp valve stem seals
0-4777SAE Holley double pumper carb
B-F101 Scott Drake pulley set. available at holley.com
6861G Mr.Gasket finned aluminum valve covers

Just remember to do it outside because it creates hindenburg zeppelin gas or hydrogen gas it doesn't degrade the metal and works well with any metal except stainless steel it can produce a very dangerous gas with stainless steel but it should never be rusty be safe especially when young people are involved stay and a non metallic plastic barrel really is important

Ive never took off a SBF timing cover that didn't have cracks tbf. Newer 5.0 water pumps also turn opposite than the old 289 because the later model is set up for a serpentine drive belt. Don't forget the dipstick provision in the block 👍
@danielsplayhouse3804
@danielsplayhouse3804 Жыл бұрын
You can take that 289 and put it in a cut down plastic barrel and then fill with vinegar and let soak for 2 weeks and vinegar eat the rust out of it.... You should give it a try for a side project. It would also to be a good science experiment for the kids to see....

I've cleaned up a lot of really rusty stuff with Muriatic Acid. It works very quickly. Might be a worth using that block as a test bed to see if it can clean up those crusty passages.
@gregallen4272

Reverse electrolysis will work better but must be done safely because it creates hindenburg zeppelin gas or hydrogen gas and can get very dangerous if done inside. There is several videos on youtube on the very simple inexpensive way to do it with washing soda available at dollar general stores in the laundry department a battery charger and old battery for balancing the system battery needs to be ok
@Vaultovinyl
@Vaultovinyl Жыл бұрын
I'd say Muriatic Acid sounds a lot simpler and cheaper than going to all that trouble. Any time I've used acid it works in mere minutes and cleans very well.
@stomper2582
@stomper2582 Жыл бұрын
@@gregallen4272 I don’t see how you could isolate the electrode in an engine block unless it was in a large vat with the isolated rod separated from the motor. That might work but it would require a lot of washing soda. 🤔

Glad to see your Galaxie wagon project progressing so well. As a Ford wagon guy I appreciate the old 302 V8 as all of my cars including the 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis have this engine. Since mine are not the high output version they are rated at only 150 H.P. and 270 Ft. Lbs. of torque, but still can get up and go if you stand on it. My 1991 wagon had the engine and transmission rebuilt in 2020 since the original engine build failed at 140,000.0 while I was towing my Triton Triple Quad trailer in Massachusetts. It only has 10,000.0 miles on it since the rebuild. My 1987 wagon has 246,000.0 miles on the original engine and runs like a watch. If you change your oil frequently these engines will last a long time. I am looking forward to your next video on the Galaxie wagon.

The hump in the front of the oil pan is to clear the oil pump. Make sure the damper and flywheel are the correct balance factor (50 oz) for that engine. They make both 157 and 164 tooth flywheels with 50 oz balance, so which ever you need. Your bell housing will determine which one.

I just wanted to share this with you. I watched a professional restorer do this. He mixed Kerosene and motor oil together to make a solvent to loosen nuts and bolts...better than liquid wrench..works exceptionally well. For gas tank cleaning he put Citric acid in a glass, a whole granulated packet...poured it in the tank after it dissolved and then filled the tank with water and let it sit. Rinsed it out with water then poured Acetone in the tank, swished it around and the tank was beautiful, as if it was never rusted at all. Thought you might like to know how the Old timers restore without buying much.

Just have to be careful using the hammer and socket technique cuz if you don't get it on there straight you can have the retainer gouge into the side of the valve stem and wreck the valve You're really better off to use a valve spring compressor every time
@tomhutchins1046
@tomhutchins1046 Жыл бұрын
You can tap the edge of the retainer to break the wedge fit but you are correct you need to use a compressor after that. You can also damage the keepers = dropped valve ouch.

I was an engineering student in 1969 thru 1973. The school was General Motorss Institute, now Kettering. It was a coop education, with alternating 6 week sessions working and at school. My work sponsor was Chevrolet Engineering Center at the GM Tech CEnter. One of the technicians there had what I hav always thought was the ultimate sleeper, a 67 Chevelle wagon with a typical grandma turquise paint job and a 327 logo on the front corner. However, this was the 327, 365 HP with a 4 speed "rock crusher" close ratio and a 4:11 posi rear end. It also had headers and exhaust cutouts. He would open these once in a while leaving the Tech Center going out onto Van Dyke in Warren. What a sweet sound, that high compression small block just screaming! He happened to be the uncle of one of my college buddies who was equally as crazy. I love sleepers, expecially wagons.

I'm watching your video about you're rebuilding the engine for the 64 wagon, I've had a couple 64 Fords, the first one I bought I bought it out of Auto heaven junkyard here in Bloomington, it had a 289 in it and it sounded cool as hell with duals on it, I had a lot of fun in that car. I just sent it's really cool you see you guys rebuilding a Ford motor, as I said before I grew up on Fords, when I was fourteen my step dad brought home a 69 Mach 1, 428 SCJ, a shaker hood scoop, GT Wheels, it has an automatic with a factory stall converter, this car was badass, I remember getting my mom to take me to school in it, we lived out in the country and of course I had to make her wait until the bus came so that we can pass the bus on the way to school.... I was cheesing ear-to-ear when we passed the bus going to school..... Anyhow I really love what you guys do keep up the cool videos they're great to watch 💯💯👀

Josh. The rule of thumb on the 302HO with stock pistons, camshaft lift should not be over .500 the F303 Ford motor sport cam what is a 512 lift and even with the proper springs would cause piston to valve interference but usually not till you got them up over about 4000 RPM. .498 lift such a a F303 cam might be more desirable simply because of not having piston to valve interference. Good luck I enjoy your show and really like that you involve the entire family my best to you and God bless.

Another great video bro. Love seeing the whole family getting in on the fun and learning along the way. Now let's talk camshafts. You always hear people say that roller cams are always better than flat tappet cams. This is largely uninformed opinion. The fact is that in applications such as street performance, drag and drive/more entry level drags where you're launching at relatively lower RPM, shot track/autocross, low speed off road, and towing/RV applications, you're almost always far better off with a flat tappet cam than you are with a roller. Here's why. The more gradual entry and exit ramps, and the much higher valve velocity over the nose of the lobe tends to make much better utilization of the inertia of the air columns in the intake and exhaust tracts, thus providing much better cylinder scavenging, and increased cylinder pressures at lower RPM ranges. And that's what makes much better torque and horsepower in that range. If you watch a lot of Richard Holdner videos, where he tests various roller cams in, for example, LS engines, you'll notice that in comparing 2 rollers of wildly different lift and duration figures, there's not a whole hell of a big difference in low RPM figures. The more major differences tend to be in the range over 5000 RPM. This is largely because in the lower RPM ranges, cylinder scavenging is vital. Once an engine passes 5000 RPM, the effects of the inertia of the pulses in the engine is far less. Now let's talk about frictional losses, which is the #2 reason we only see significant gains at upper RPM ranges with the roller. While there is less friction between the cam and the foot of the lifter, because of the much steeper entry and exit ramps of the roller cam, you have much higher side load on the lifter body, and bores at lower ranges. And if you think about it, the area of contact is far more on the body of the lifter than the foot. So at the end of the day, you're only seeing the benefits of those roller lifters, and rocker arms to for that matter, at those higher RPM ranges where things are happening much faster. Of course it's nice that rollers hace virtually no break in requirements, bear in mind that most cam companies offer case hardening, which is always a good idea, and which makes a flat tappet cams require virtually no break in time either, almost no danger of flattening lobes, and significantly decreases friction. So you can have the benefit of the flat tappet lobe design, and better scavenging, with the reduced friction, and reliability of the roller A little more on scavenging. A while back I did an intake/carb swap on my 74 Lincoln, and now I'm having to do a cam swap on my sister's GMC Envoy with the 5.3 LS. Of course we can't post pictures in the comments here, but if I could show you a comparison of the intake ports between the 460 in my Lincoln and the LS, you'd notice that there's absolutely no carbon buildup in the 460, but the carbon deposits go clear up the intake manifold on the LS. This is because the lobe design of a roller cam operates the valves more like a light switch. It opens them quickly, and holds them at virtually full lift for almost the entire duration. This makes the intake and exhaust valves to be all the way open for a significant amount of the time, allowing exhaust gasses to reverberate back into the engine and up the intake tract at low RPM which is where tis engine spends virtually all its time.

First off I love your videos. As someone who has worked on 1960s and 70s cars since I was 15 years old in 1972 I can really relate to the old classics. That being said when you started working on the engine I noticed a couple of signs that whoever worked on it before didn't have a clue about what they were doing. I'm sure you will fix any screw ups you find along the way. Good luck and keep up the good work. Say hi to all the family love seeing the kids get in on the fun.

I was going to drop this suggestion before you said that this wagon was going to get painted, but my first impulse was to do an affordable restoration on the Galaxie wagon. Pull out some dents. Cut out some rust. Fill and sand it level.

I would DEFINITELY run the T5! It will have a better selection of ratios plus an overdrive. The thing to remember though is that the old 3 and 4 speed manual transmissions usually had their shifters of the side while the T5 will have it right down the center of the trans. It may require some interesting engineering to get a shifter that works properly with a bench seat since I believe it will be farther rearward than the old 3 speed shifter. However, it will make the question of what starter to use easier to answer since the bellhousing and flywheel will be a matched set. Also, I believe the Ford 5.0 uses a starter that is more like a GM product with an integrated solenoid. The major issue you will run into when using the T5 is that it uses a cable style pull clutch rather than a linkage or hydraulic push clutch. The pedal requires a bellcrank shaped piece called a Quadrant that bolts to the top of the pedal at the pivot point. This will require a hole in the firewall that will need to be reinforced or else it will pull right through. Even on the 5.0 Mustangs, it was not unheard of for them to crack the firewall and pull through with a high performance clutch.

I had an 89' Is Mercury Grand Marquis. It being the 5.0 with that same oil pan! The upper right side water pump bolt usually snaps off when you remove the pump. The outer housing can be drilled into with a 1/16 bit. Drill about 3 or 4 holes in a row on it. Spray with a lubricant, and use broad square tip vice grips in the bolt that snapped, and slowly move it back and forth while repeatedly spraying it down with lube. No heat either. It will back out after a few minutes. The same bolt snaps on all of them when the pump goes bad.
