I think what you need to remember is that most of these foods like pork, for example, are completely fine. It's not the foods that are the issue. It's the American versions that are banned because they add a huge amount of stuff to their food.

In Ireland, subways bread was found to contain so much sugar it had to be officially classified as cake!!

Quite a few Americans who have relocated to the UK have said they started to feel a lot healthier & have put it down to the food regulations here. One of my work colleagues spent a month working here and, when he returned to New York, became a vegetarian having been made aware of the chemicals used in food production in the US. That's not cool when you have really expensive health care in the States.

I have heard a lot of Americans who lived elsewhere for a long time say they got really REALLY sick when they went home because of the chemicals in the food they were no longer acclimatised to eat. I'd love to visit America but with a digestive health condition I just can't risk it.

The big difference between the US FDA and food and medicines control agencies in other western countries is easy to recognise. In the US, big commerce is in charge. it is worth remembering here that a lot of these products its only the US version that is banned, for example we have skittles in the UK, we just have different dyes and chemicals in them, same in parts of the EU, and in Europe and the UK we have bread, normally sliced bread but its got different stuff in. again, austria and norway have swiss rolls i believe but they are different brands with different chemicals, again, Special K is in the EU, Just with changes to the recipes

Mountain dew dissapeared from the UK for years. When it came back it lost all its colour so they put it in luminous green bottles so it looks the same as it used to.

Steak tartare is not digusting, if the meat is source well from a trusted source, when well seasoned, etc it is lovely. This is coming from a person who wanted everuthing to be incernerated but over time as I got older I tried different things. It is really really nice. With regards to a burger, I agree, if you dont know the source of the meat, the age, how long it's been hanging around, etc then cook it to death.

I was always told unless the meat has been freshly minced (ground in the US) you should always cook a hand made burger all the way through to kill off any bacteria that may have been on the mince before it was made into a patty.

I have my steak blue (still mooing). It's perfectly safe because all the harmful stuff is on the outside and gets seared off. It's when it's minced that's a problem, because it mixes all the germs through the meat so searing it won't do any good. And steak tartare is delicious 😋

It's not just the EU or the UK but many other countries all over the world have more and tougher rules and regulations than the American FDA. It's a culture shock when we go to the States or when Americans go to other countries. There are more regulations about food, about drugs, about gun ownership, traffic, labour regulations... almost everything.

Regarding chicken here in UK, chicken is kept in fridge, or freezer then its defrosted overnight in the fridge. Must be fully cooked thru with no pink inside. Use separate knives and cutting boards (if possible), and must wash them afterwards. Clean/sanitise worktops, and thoroughly wash hands after handling raw chicken or any other raw meats to minimise cross-contamination.

Not a lot of people know it, but you can consume too much vitamins and minerals than is healthy to take in. Few people run into this problem and it's usually the other way around, but it's technically true.

As a brit who moved to the US I have struggled with the food here. Yes - bread/cheese doesn't go mouldy for about 20 years but it just doesn't taste right.

I know this is not strictly on topic, but one of the biggest differences I have noticed between US and UK foods is bread. Why so much sugar in US bread? It is so sweet it's almost like cake.

One thing I've never understood in the UK is when skittles are advertised on TV etc, it's always using the American commercials, even though, unbeknown to most people who assume skittles are an American product, they are actually a British invention, that were first created in 1974, and then in 1979 exported to America and then in 1982 because they had become so popular they stopped being imported and were licensed by Wrigley to produce them for the American market. Also starburst are again a British invention fron the 1960s, which incidentally, the soft chewy centre of skittles is actually the same as starburst sweets, and they were originally known as opal fruits until about 20+ years ago (around 98/99) and we're renamed as starburst to fall in to line with the brand naming in the rest of the world, much like marathon bars in the UK were renamed snickers around 1990 to match branding in the rest of the world. The amount of people outside of the UK who don't realise the sweets and candies they have been eating all their lives actually originated in Britain is astonishing. Most Americans I've chatted to about kit-kats either think they are an American invention or Japanese. It's also surprising to me how many American chocolates and candies are based on British ones such as whoppers being based on Maltesers etc. One thing about American candy is it evokes a nostalgia for pre-1990s British candy, which had just as many e-numbers and artificial colours and flavourings in them. It's all well and good that ours are free from artificial this and that, and contain real fruit juice etc, but it means favourites from when I was a kid don't taste the same, so every now and then a trip to the American imports shop is taken to buy a few different varieties. I don't eat many sweets as I'm now diabetic but always have some on hand because I suffer with low sugar levels, bit high sugar levels, and a couple of Mike and Ike's perk me right back up! One thing I have found is US 'Nerds' are not a patch on UK 'Nerds' as the UK version are very flavoursome but the us version are just like a non flavoured sugar crystal to my taste buds. But while I will say I think American chocolate just tastes of spew and paraffin (which components of both are genuine ingredients of American chocolate to increase the temp that it will melt at) and British chocolate is vastly superior, I do think that American candies are amazing as they taste like our sweets used to. Not that our sweets nowadays are bad, they are not, they are excellent aswell, but just too different to their previous incarnations, in some cases, unrecognisable as being the sweet who's name it bares

I've just returned from a holiday in the States, where almost everything i put in my mouth, even Coca Cola, upset my stomach, in that case mainly cause of the high fructose corn syrup. It's then that you realise just how highly processed American food is.

The reason why you'll get more sugar in original Mountain Dew is because HFCS is much sweeter than sugar. So you need to add less HFCS than sugar to get the same sweet taste.

We have Skittles in the UK, I love them, but I think we put in different ingredients.

Steak tartare is lovely, and has a raw egg crack over the top of it too. It's delicious. If you get the opportunity to try it, you should. It's probably one of those dishes that fills everyone with apprehension, but it's so good. I'd only recommend getting it from a reputable restaurant though. Also, getting the choice of how your burger is cooked is really common in the UK. Especially in the gourmet burger joints. I was in one just the other week, and got mine medium rare. Amazing!

I worked at an abattoir/slaughterhouse in Australia and to get an export licence for the USA we had to go to extreme measures that massively exceeded the standards for American abattoirs. The USA food industry goes to extreme measures to not allow food from non American owned companies. The majority of meat consumed in the USA comes from south America where USA companies have been buying up every piece of land they can. The USA actually imports over 80% of the food that is consumed but the companies that produce the food are majority USA owned. The fda actually gets the majority of its funding from USA food companies and places profits over people.

Eggs is another fun one, FDA requires eggs be washed in water, a significant amount of countries specifically require that eggs not be washed in water; as it makes them more susceptible to bacterial infection due to destroying a protective layer. Which is why Eggs in the US must always be stored chilled while can often be found not in the chillers, in most countries.

Steak Tartareis delicious! Good quality steak minced and served with lemon juice and black pepper is available in nearly all countries that are famed for their culinary culture.

Yep. Good news is if you look you will be able to find places that sell foods to a higher quality in America. Bad news is it will cost more. And you have to do all that research first. Sorry. I am glad I am in Europe, where MOST of the time I can just trust what I find in the stores. But did you know there are STILL things you need to look out for? I moved from America over here in the very late 1990s. SO for example, the skittles had been just fine to buy here for a long time before they were eventually banned in colourants. Clean eating is really the best bet. And buying organic. Costs a bundle but you can also try growing some yourself. And simply avoiding processed foods deals with most of it.

On the Coca Cola thing, a few little interesting facts... Not so much of due to a ban, but Coca Cola owned beverages (usually Coke) are the number one selling brand in every country where it is sold (so excluding the ones its banned in), with the exception of one country... Scotland! The No.1 selling drink there is Irn Bru, owned by Barr :) And another fact, but this one is about Fanta, specifically Fanta orange... Fanta Orange actually exists due to Coca Cola, as during the war, it's sale to Germany (and all required ingredients) was halted (for obvious reasons), so in attempt to keep the drink flowing, an attempt was made to recreate a version of their own, but they used oranges as a source of the drink... and died it brown, to look like Coke. The name Fanta comes from the German word 'Fantasie', which was a tongue-in-cheek attempt at humour, as it was deemed that while drinking it, you closed your eyes and fantasised about Coca Cola. Useless info, but fun nonetheless :)

I’m British but have lived in France for the last 3 years and steak tartare is extremely popular, along with other forms of tartare such as tuna and salmon. I love it and you can find it in almost every restaurant here however I would be reluctant to eat it in the UK, due to the extremely high food hygiene standards in France. It has to be prepared and eaten on the same day, restaurants will not let you take any leftover tartare home in a doggy bag for that reason and I don’t know anyone who has been sick from tartare. There is a reason that beef can be eaten raw/rare, because cows don’t carry the same diseases and poultry so the only harm in beef is the bacteria that grows on it after it’s been killed. So providing its fresh, it’s completely fine. Trust me, our stomach acids are strong enough to kill this level of bacteria

I go, quite often to a brewpub in north-west Germany and one of their food specialities is "Mett". Raw minced tenderloin of pork, seasoned with a little salt and pepper, topped with some raw onion on a real bread roll. It is chemically tested and actually tastes delicious, if you can get your head around it? Personally. I would rather trust this than most American foods!

I'm sure you've heard of Au Gratin - _A “gratin” is any dish that is topped with cheese or breadcrumbs mixed with butter, then heated in the oven or under the broiler until brown and crispy, according to The Food Lover’s Companion_ _The term “au gratin” or “gratinée” just refers to anything prepared in that manner_ We had Smarties (made by Rowntree in the UK) going right back to 1937 which are just like M&Ms, in fact since M&Ms were created in 1941, UK Smarties predates them.

Some of these things like skittle,Mountain Dew, Coca Cola, M&M’s have different ingredients I here in uk. They are less danger to your health. In fact several candies, serials and carbonated drinks have different ingredients here in uk. We use cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, we use a lot more natural dyes, we don’t use as many chemicals and often Portion sizes are smaller. Uk isn’t the healthiest country but we certainly are a lot more cautious than America. However I still avoid Mountain Dew and have only drank it once. I decided never again after how I felt after drinking it.

The big difference between for example the EU and the US is: In the EU, if there is a concern that a chemical might lead to cancer it is deemed unsafe to use for food until it is proven that the concern about it was wrong. In the US on the other hand a chemical can still be used until the concern is proven right.

Funnily enough, people in Germany actually like to eat raw pork. Roll with minced pork meat and onions is very popular here. But that is not a problem. The minced meat is made daily by the butcher and must be eaten the same day. Our pigs are therefore examined very carefully for bacteria and diseases.

here we do not only eat tartar, it's very common to eat raw pork on a breadroll as breakfest. if it's fresh, there is now way that it woll harm you other than beeing satisfied. it's no big deal and noone is getting sick if you eat the minced meat at the same day (well and the animals are healthy). food is way more regulated

We have a similar sweet to M&Ms in the UK called Smarties which were introduced in 1938, 3 yeaars before the American version. It's only a few years ago that M&Ms became available in the UK.

Yes here in Germany we have `mett' uncooked meat that you mostly eat raw on a bun as a breakfast. But you here in Germany there are many rules for that. It has to be fresh (like real fresh) has to be stored cold and you can only eat it on that day you buy it tho. Of course it's still raw minced meat so ppl with a weak stomach or pregnant women (just as an example) shouldn't eat it at all! I really like it and it's totally tasty ^^

JT a tip for ya as you live out in the sticks and are surrounded by farms. If the farm has an on site butcher shop. Go buy your meat eggs and dairy from them. I'm well aware grass fed is more expensive but if you don't want the extra chemicals giving you cancer or killing your little swimmers ( if you want kids some day) that is the only way to get clean food over there. When I visit my girl in Nebraska that's what I buy. Cuz I sure ain't eating the normal store food.

It should be noted, these foods are not banned across the world, just the American version is banned from being sold. England and a lot of europe still have skittles, just it doesnt use the same food dyes that the american version uses. We still have bread, just its not that stuff that that is soold i nthe states, that is closer to cake than bread.

What you should wonder is why the FDA uses terms like Generally Considered Safe. If a product can cause any health issues (I say can, not by definition does yet.) than I would say it should be termed as Generally Considered Dangerous. But money goes before health, as usual in the US.

Steak Tartar is sooooo good though. My dad used to make it now and then when I was a child and I always loved it. The taste isn't comparable to a raw burger patty because you add a few other ingredients to the meat, including capers, cornichons, shallots, parsley, Worcestershire sauce and egg yolks.

If the recipe can be altered in the European union and international countries then they are made in the European union and international countries using the recipe approved by the food standards agency in these places without any added chemicals.

You can buy American sweets in the UK like Twinkies, 3 Musketeers bars and many others there is a shop in UK called Kingdom of Sweets but make sure you take your mortgage with because you pay upto 3 times for similar sweets in other shops in the UK.

I live in Cincinnati OH and you can get stake tartar in many restaurants. Once I had ir and went across the st and tried another one in the opposit restaurant.

With the chicken, it comes down to the conditions the chickens are kept in while they're alive. If you can get whatever the US version of free range / outdoor reared is, then it should be better. Though you then have to factor in whether they're going through the same processing plant. In fact with all the meat, the problem is that animal welfare standards in the US are pretty much in the 1970s.

The Bacteria on a steak is on the outside so blue steak is fine (quick sear each side) but if it's minced then the bacteria goes inside so undercooked burgers mince etc is more likely to give you a volcanic bottom!
