For everyone yelling grease, this is a final drive from a piece of heavy equipment. Called a planetary. Outer ring with teeth is the ring gear. Inside set of three gears are called the planetary gears. Center pin is the sun gear. It does not get grease. It gets gear oil. Watch at end of video when he puts cover on the assembly and pause. There are three holes. Fill, drain, and level on some covers. A single hole on others. Drain hole is capped off. Oil goes into fill hole until it starts to seep out level hole. Then its good to go. If a single hole its rotated to drain, rotated back to fill/level.

Just a little FYI. What we’ve got here….is a Planetary gearset. The outer gear is the annnulus, the inner gear is the sun gear the three small ones in the middle are attached to the planet carrier and rotate around the sun gear. These are in probably every automatic transmission ever built. These are able to withstand high torque and then multiply it even higher. If you hold one and drive one as an input the third will be a multiplied torque/ gear reduced output. If you hold two, nothing will turn (trans brake on a dragster)

You’d be amazed. The math on it isn’t super hard. It’s just gearing ratios. We had to do these for a class of mine. Except i was given engine rpm and wheel speed and some other factors of the drivetrain to find for instance individual gear ratios of the 1st 2nd and 3rd and so on. Then also find final drive or diff ratios.

@@zexcthd5519 Some of those assignments were very interesting. I had to take a cylinder pressure chart over 720 degrees and convert it to numerical values then apply the force to the crown of a piston on a single cylinder four stroke engine. The fun part was plotting the individual vibrations of the piston (reciprocating), the con rod (combination of reciprocating and rotating) and the crank (rotating) then calculate the combined vibration in the x and y planes. Then I had to vary the mass of the counter weight on the crank and see how it changed. All calculated and graphed in excel. Lots of calculus involved.

Planetary gearset, that's a cool thing. I saw one of these work with a sheet off on a soviet Neva-3 type dredger, it's mesmerising to look at. Though, that's done only during maintenance - usually the gear is filled with oil to the top.

They're a pretty impressive excavator. Something like 170 horsepower and they're reasonably priced I mean you can buy a good used one for 80 to 85,000. You just don't see them in the United States that much. I used one overseas And it did exactly what I needed it to do but they would never replace a Case CX2100. That thing would run rings around the 225

This is called a hub reduction axle, its used on heavy duty vehicles for taking heavier loads. It takes gear oil not greece
