Juda is a Rambouillet that I've shorn for several years now. They are the most common commercial wool breed in Texas, derived from the Merino breed. Fine wool sheep can be difficult to shear, but typically have quite a bit of flexibility in their bodies, allowing for easy maneuvering in a shearer's arms.

I LOVE the way you shear animals! SO many reasons, but I'll give you the top 3: 1.) You are gentle with each one, even the ones who need a little more force. You even talk to the animals when you know they need it. 2.) Your comments, whether verbal or written, are HILARIOUS!!!! 3.) You talk to us, your audience, as if we are smart - you don't talk down to us as if we couldn't understand what you're saying/doing. I had a few shearing videos pop up in my feed, and the animals looked uncomfortable and nervous, and the shearer was kind of rough with the poor sheep! I can understand that when it's a big operation and they have to be fast. However, when it's just a few animals... 😢 Thank you for everything you do for the animals you shear, and thank you for sharing with us. ❤❤❤

I love watching you shear these wooly creatures, I’d heard nonsense about raising sheep for wool being inhumane, but the way you manipulate their bodies and move with a combination of care and confidence looks more like loving on these guys than brute force and overpowering.
@Ravencall
@Ravencall 10 ай бұрын
Cruel practices exist in commercial wool production- it isn't "nonsense". Of course Right Choice and others are sensitive to humane shearing but some large outfits will practice "mulesing", which removes the skin around the tail, fast careless shearing that cuts up the animal's skin, tail docking and castration with no anesthesia, and inhumane slaughter practices when the animal is no longer useful.
@Oak_Hollow
@Oak_Hollow 10 ай бұрын
@Ravencall Mulesing has nothing to do with shearing, just flystrike prevention, and pretty specifically Merinos in Australia. Tail docking and castration near birth sounds much worse than it really is, all one has to do is watch the animal's reaction. And again, has nothing to do with shearing. As a matter of fact, wool production typically COSTS the farme, as opposed to being profitable.
@Ravencall
@Ravencall 10 ай бұрын
@@Oak_Hollow I was a livestock vet tech and I was an Animal Husbandry major. I'm very well aware of these procedures in real life and even performed castrations on pigs. Seems worse than it is? Ha, easy for you to say. And I never said mulesing was part of shearing. It is an answer to a problem of breeding for production.
@Ravencall
@Ravencall 10 ай бұрын
And note that the original question was concerning why sheep raising is often considered inhumane- not shearing.

It was fascinating to see his ribs and hips after the shear, and realize you actually had to hold the skin more taught than with a sheep with more weight. So no knicks is really impressive. He actually has a face! And a sweet one, too. Nice job and great commentary. Love the sweet moment at the end with you patting him. "Good thing there's no mirror in the pasture" made me laugh.

Most animals have different names for males intact to castrates, females if they have had babies, or never been bred. Like a cow is technically a female bovine that has been bred, a female that has never been bred is a heifer. And males that have testicles are bulls, those that have been castrated are steer. It’s pretty neat to learn em all, which I haven’t done lol.

Hi Katie, This past weekend I went to a craft/art show and there was a couple guys there with some sheep. After watching your channel for a very long time I paused to see what they were going to do. The weather was really bad, it was almost 90°. Two of the sheep were in a cage in the back of the truck waiting their turn, they were EXTREMELY thick. The one they just got done shearing had several spots of blood from being nicked. I knew what had happened but there was lots of kids asking how they could get a red polka dot sheep of their own. I kept my mouth shut and my head down. I wasn’t sure if I should say anything. I was surprised at how big they were. When I see sheep in a field they don’t look that big. I appreciate you how you take your time and do your best to not nick them. 💛🧡 Btw, I’m very allergic to wool, but I love animals. Haha
