It's been a while since I uploaded anything Priest-related, but this particular interview with Rob is a true gem for the fans and I had to share it with a wider group of people.
The interview is from 1982, possibly a couple of weeks before the release of Screaming for Vengeance (July 17) - since the interviewer says it's "coming out" and Rob says it "has a title now" and the album is "long lasted".
In the background you can hear Pain and Pleasure playing until 0225. Rob says they are in Miami.

I mean it was recorded just before a show, and he never went on stage completely pissed - only buzzed. The real drug thing only started in 1984. Here he was just smoking a bit of dope and popping the odd pill. Rob's major vice was booze.

Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band ever, but Rob Halford The Metal God is my all time favorite lead singer ever. I still remember the first time I ever listened to Judas Priest which was back in 1987 on MTV'S Headbanger's Ball. They played the live version of The Hellion / Electric Eye from the Legendary 1982 Memphis Tennessee show off the Screaming For Vengeance tour. I loved it big time, and ever since I have been a huge massive fan of Judas Priest. I was barely 10 years old back then, and that was when I really got into Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal music. It was a very exciting time for me and I loved the majority of all the bands I listened to for my first time, but I knew even back then that there was something very special about Judas Priest compared to most of all the other bands. Over thirty years later Judas Priest is still one of my all time favorite bands ever. Thanks for posting this interview. I really enjoyed it.

Got his book on audio. Had it pre-ordered. Listens to it while driving otr in a semi in a day & half. All 12 plus hours. Rob narrates his book too, like Bruce of Maiden done his. He was respectful to K. k. As was KK in his book of Rob. Glenn of Priest does not get the respect he deserves as a guitarist. 2 handed finger tapping is what Eddie Van halen is known for & credited for. But, the same year Vanhalens first album came out. So did Hell Bent for Leather. & The intro to Glenn's solo was "Finger Tapping". Credit where it is do for Priest & Glenn. (Les Paul did it in exercises back in his day but that's history)

There were not to many interviews with Halford seen in the US back then. The band always tried to sort of hide the fact that Halford was gay and had gay mannerisms in his speech and way of moving. Back then it was a big "NO-NO" and the band couldn't be seen being fronted by a gay man. Nowadays very few people would care, but back then people did care. Halford was gay and he showed it. Good to know now that he is comfortable with who he is and that he always was.

It wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference if he had come out. Probably would have helped them even more. Metal is not about being gay or straight, black or white, male or female, long or short hair, or tattoos and leathers. . It's a primeval force that flows through all. That's why it's a worldwide phenomenon. There was a lot of racism and sexism prevalent in the NWOBHM which was predominantly an all white boy show. I remember seeing Priest and Ozzy at the dawn of the 80s and being subject to racial abuse. Something that would never happen today. Thankfully that all changed when thrash and glam metal took over and brought a more balanced multicultural representation that appealed to everyone. I noticed more women at shows too which was a sign things were changing for the better.
@HELL77
@HELL77 2 жыл бұрын
@@rushshukla4636 Don't know about that. I actually think it would have been very damaging to their careers. It is easy to say things now with todays points of view or mentality, but back then things were different. I don't think Metal ever had a problem with races back then, after all many Metal artists were of different backgrounds and ethnicities from the beginning , but homosexuality was the big NO,NO! Things have changed now of course.
@jonfklein

@@HELL77 I agree. Judas Priest would have been on every metal fan's blacklist if he had come out in the early '80s. Even after he came out, in the '90s I recall, his popularity took a hit.

People behind the scenes like these reporters must have known he was gay long before he came out about a decade later. His mannerisms and use of sexual innuendo in conversation are a dead give away. Not to mention he practically "outed" himself talking about shopping for sex toys.
