I can tell all of you exactly what happened. He was visiting some shady sights and entered his email. He received an email from a scammer where they asked to send him money. They gave some bs reason. They wanted him to cash it and then “forward” part of the money to the next person. And then he thought to himself, “This is probably a scam but I could use the money if it works and goes through.” He then decided to agree and emailed them back his address. The check arrived in the mail as well as the letter, which he read. He was shocked that these people actually sent him a real looking check. He did call the number and did his research but couldn’t find anything about it at all because it just said it was from “The Company”. He knew it was suspicious and most likely fake but if he was able to cash it then no one would ever know. But, he decided to not take it to his bank because he was scared of getting caught. He chose to go to a check cashing agency hoping that they wouldn’t attempt to verify it. They turned him down saying that they couldn’t verify it. At this point he knew for certain that it was fake but was so set on the money that he went to another check cashing agency. They denied it and so he scribbled out his signature. At this point he most likely stopped someone to get a drink or eat lunch. As he was thinking about his next attempt, it suddenly occurred to him. He owed his friend $500. She knew that he was supposed to pay it out of his settlement check. If she cashed it and it went bad then it wouldn’t affect him anyways. So he set his plan into motion. He went to her, said he received his check but didn’t have his own bank account (liar), and told her it was from his settlement because she was aware that he would be getting one. He knew that she would believe it was a settlement check because it was pre planned for him to pay her out of it. She cashed the check and gave him parts of it. He was nervous over the next few days and that is why, even though she was in the hospital, he was in a hurry to get his $1,600 of it in case it was stopped for being a fake check. He finally got all of his money. He thought he was in the clear and that he didn’t get caught. Meanwhile, this kind woman was contacted by her bank telling her that the check was bad and they needed her to repay the money. She goes to him and he plays stupid. He just happened to have $1,600 from it that he could have given back to her for her bank but he intentionally (knowing at this point that the check was fake) chose to put it all on her and walk away. This woman wasn’t having it and she filed a police report and opened an investigation. She most likely asked him for the money back to fix it and he ignored her. Then she sued him and they wound up here in court. He was bumbling and wouldn’t even tell Judge Faith what website he was on. He wouldn’t talk about it. I believe “Lisa” was the fake name of the scammer who emailed him. I also believe that his email is filled with messages from this scammer asking him if it was cashed and for him to fulfill his promise to forward the money. He is just as guilty as the scammer. He was told several times it was unverifiable and fake. But he did not care. He deserves jail time.
