I don't read for the authors, I read for the story. So don't think it matters if it was written by a man or a woman, if it's a genre you like, read it. Reading something written by a woman or a man for the sake of it, is completely pointless.

@@yaeli_i_guess So? Why do they have to read female authors? People read what they like, maybe some aren't interested in reading books from female authors, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's a personal choice.

When reading Tender is the Flesh, I really had to remind myself that this book is based in Argentina. Where meat is a huge part of culture and economy so once you place it in that context you can understand why veganism wasn't even a consideration. But still a wild quick read.

I think people in the Western world need to remember that veganism isn’t accessible in all countries/regions lol in the Philippines, meat and farm animals are also a huge part of life (we have meat in our vegetable dishes) and culture so the transition to cannibalism over veganism in the book made huge sense
@nvrvnjv6362

Veganism wasn't even a consideration because the book is not about dietary choices, but a comment on capitalism, alienation of the worker class and body autonomy.

As an argentinian, I feel like 75% of the reviews of this book miss this point and its sort of eurocentric. The unhingedness is an excuse to expose the (at least, argentinian) meat industry and human capability to harm and alienate. In a country with a recent history of dictatorship and genocide this work makes a whole new sense. The problem is that it's sold with the cannibalism plot but that's not the actual point. Also, the english translation is not as good as the actual writing.

Jacob Elordi’s Elvis movie is not another Elvis biopic. It’s about Priscilla (and the movie is called ‘Priscilla’). Priscilla Presley is also going to be a producer on the film. You're not morally superior just because you only eat vegetables and you're part of the reason why vegans have a horrible reputation for being judgemental (when a lot of them really aren't). Ecosystem needs beings that eat meat, just look at what happened to the Yellowstone wolves. What humans should have done is not take so much of other organisms' habitat without care and if consuming another animal is done, utilize as much part and not just what is commercially wanted.

I know it's an old book, but I kind of wish you didn't mention how When Breath Becomes Air ends, because the abrupt transition from his voice to another was so perfectly analogous to how it will be for us all one day - caught midsentence. I had no idea that was going to happen when I was reading this in public and I just started bawling. A book whose execution is greater than all the writings within and it catching my off-guard was the perfect way to experience it.

In my opinion Tender is the flesh is very intelligent. It’s a dystopian universe but it does play out based on the fact that the meat maket is one of the biggest incomes of Argentina and there’s a big culture around food that contains cow. I love that you occasionally throw in to your schedule an entirely whimsical video such as this one. I wonder what the list of the favourite books of key world leaders might contain...Boris's might include Playboy of the Western World; Vlad's must include The Government Inspector; and The Donald's?? Catch Me if You Can, of course! 😅

The author of tender is the flesh is vegan. In interviews, she talks about how the book is meant to have people examine their own meat eating habits. Not acknowledging veganism in the book is intentional. It's meant to parallel how few consider veganism as an option now. Animals are, after all, conscious.

i kind of like the fact humans didn't want to give up meat in "tender is the flesh" i think people in general display a pattern of doing the less easy thing just because it feels good (like outlawing meat could potentially help the global warming situation a lot more than freaking trying to build solar panels, we have solutions we just don't want to implement them)

Chris Pine studied English at the University of California, Berkeley, and spent a year in the UK studying at my alma mater, the University of Leeds. I’m not surprised, therefore, at the quality of his reading matter. He also got to enjoy “supping warm beer” in Leeds, and likes to go back there when he can.

Tender is the flesh did touch on veganism tho… it was said that at the beginning everyone was vegan but the meat industry started to push governments into releasing studies that said that people couldn’t survive on just plants. Every doctor started to push the idea that you needed meat and human meat was a healthy option. And it wasn’t like a change from one day to the other, it was gradual, and it did have push back, for example Marcos’s father, it is heavily implied his sanity went to a point of no return after “the transition”. Also it’s like one of the points of the book; how we humans will do almost everything when told and the lengths we go to justify the horrors. The people speaking against the government specially the scientist were also killed as cattle, a cultural reference to the political deaths and disappearances in Latam, specially Argentina in this case

Pedro Pascal told GQ he was reading The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, and I like him even more after that. I loved Death In Venice and Tonio Kröger. Two stunning books that changed the way I see literature.
