just to clarify, SAG-AFTRA is still on strike for TV/Streaming/Theatrical contracts! the writer's guild is the one that reached a tentative agreement with their own union, which is completely separate from the actor's union's strike and negotiations. they will, however, go back into negotiations Monday October 2nd! thank you for being supportive of actors and their strike!
@movingforwardLDTH
@movingforwardLDTH 8 ай бұрын
Exactly. Writers’ strike is off (although the membership hasn’t yet voted to accept/reject the contract, the last step). Actors (& others covered by SAG-AFTRA) still on strike, but the parties are restarting negotiations n Monday. (It was the companies who previously refused to return to the table.)

I think what they mean is that, traditionally Ireland is painted as a melancholic country and also has a century long history of cultural opression (also The Troubles) which kind of leads to country wide collective trauma which often gets dealt with through stories. Irish people (and Northern Europeans for that matter) are also known to be very humble and don’t take praise very well contrary to for example the general American. Margot Robbie in the other hand is Australian, a country, at least to my knowledge, famous for the adventures and happiness etc. I would say it fits that Robbie would read the happy go lucky flowery books and Murphy reads the “let’s wretch my heart” books. (This is just what I would say, but I am from neither of those countries so pls correct me if I’m wrong) Edit bc I did indeed realizes that Margot Robbie is Australian. Also my knowledge of Australian culture is limited so pls add on your thoughts :))

@clara_hp6254 I'm from Australia which I is why I was wondering what OP meant. I don't think that any of Margot's picks reflect our culture. For example to Kill a Mockingbird is very American, the Hobbit has nothing to do with us, and neither do any of the other books.

About Dune. Princess Irulans epigraphs are from her later writings when Paul „Muad’Dib“ pretty much became a religious figure. As for their function, I always thought that they meant to show how the universe saw Paul and the difference between reality and propaganda. Oftentimes what she writes doesn’t / didn’t quite happen that way and Paul himself is no hero, even though he's being worshipped like a deity. Additionally, like Paul, the reader knows what's gonna happen (in a way) but isn’t able to stop it
@videodonna5594
@videodonna5594 8 ай бұрын
Yes exactly! And the story isn’t meant to be suspenseful it’s meant to be “historical”, when you study history you already know what happens (or what the government has decided the story of what happened is) so like knowing the end, that Paul becomes a major figure isn’t a spoiler it’s why you’re studying him at all
@MissCaraMint
@MissCaraMint 8 ай бұрын
@@videodonna5594 Yes. it reminds me a lot of those historical fiction books about real historical characters. You know where it is going. You know Marie Antoinette for example eventually gets het head chopped off, or that Henry VIII ends up with a string of failed marriages where he kills off almost half of them.

I'm here for Enid Blyton books. Her books shaped my middle school period! I remember devouring 'Famous Five' book series and 'The Secret Seven' series. My librarian during my 6th grade would not let anyone read any other books until we finished these series. This book was my gateway to detective books. I LOVE them. I do not remember any names, or even incidents, like you said, I remember only the feeling. I even forgot about these books. You mentioning them, it just GOD brought back all the memories. Love Margot for putting this out there, LOVE YOU for beautifully explaining the exact feeling that I share. I definitely am going to give a re-read. Aw! Lots of nostalgia bubbling, I can already see me enjoying them in the near future again! Thanks bud! You are AWESOME!

Great video idea. Loved the variety of books here too. I was Barbie all the way in the films…but for the books I agree with Oppenheimer!

Thank you for the video it's wonderful, I enjoyed it immensely. Would never think about looking into book recommendations, just because it never occurred to me they existed anywhere on the Net. I also loved Enid Blyton's books when I was a young teenage :) And Nancy Drew and Hardy brothers as well :) Thanks for Claire Keegan, I made a mental note in my head to find a copy. Funny, while I was listening to you I also thought on what kind of book I would recommend to these guys in return, and I came up with "Rosy Project" - and a couple of minutes later here you are, having this book behind you on a shelf. Btw, what would you recommend to Cillian and Margot? Your dog is lovely. What's its name?

jack referring to bill furlong of small things like these as bob furlong in now two videos as he talks about his obsession over ‘small things like these’ is underrated comedy 😭😭 but fr thanks jack i read the book bc of you and i’m equally obsessed over bob furlong

Omg saaaaame with The Secret Seven! First books I actually read by myself when transitioning away from picture books, and it meant everything! I then read pretty much every Enid Blyton book I could get my hands on during my childhood.

Loved this video, so fun. I read John Baneville’s The Sea earlier this year. It sounds like it’s, strangely, similar to Eclipse but I loved it. Poetic but not overly so. It was so good!

Claire Keegan's writing is very lyrical and pretty! BUT can you please read Antarctica and tell us what you think? Cuz I thought the character's and representations were very problematic and that suppressed the writing.

Really expected the Oppenheimer biography to be one of the books on Murphy's list. Was surprised when it wasn't, and was surprised when you said he read a book called Eclisped, really thought we were gonna be talking about Twilight for a hot second there lol.

The fact that Jack would choose Hemingway over Dune expains to me why we would never be bookish friends, but I'm still here for the vibes. Truth be told, I didn't like the next installments of the Dune franchise, but I also never read more Hemingway than I absolutely had to.
