Ive sustained more injuries from BJJ than i ever did from judo.

In judo I found my partners knew when to just take a thrown. BJJ I'm getting injured every week from white belts treating every specific sparring round on a damp Wednesday as the comp finals. It's mostly been wrist injuries from sloppy guard passes or dropping their entire weight on me in weird ways.

I agree that Judo is more definitely more taxing on the body as we age. Yet, it depends when you start, how, for what purpose, and with whom you're training. I'm 43 years old, and a light heavy/heavyweight, I started training Judo when I was 14, and I still train with intensity but for different purposes. I am also a BJJ black belt and train intensely and regularly as well. It's all how you train and your goal.

@@muaythaikicks3418 // Not at all! I started at 12 myself... Now, depending on what you plan to accomplish, your effort and commitment levels will be different. While still needing a lot of attention health, recreation and self-defense takes less of a commitment than competitive Judo. If you're planning on competing you'll have to put a lot of work on the mats, because by the time you are ready, you'll be facing a lot of kids your age that have been training 4+ years. But don't be discouraged either way, just get on those mats, work your butt off and get the results you want!

I'm writing this after a shoulder injury in judo, if u wanna do randori, free sparring. It's much safer to go with a high level belt as they will be sure to grab u as ur on your way being thrown. BUT! This is the first time I've had a shoulder injury and it was my fault as I didn't accept it as it was happening.

You can do Judo safley and also when you are older. But if it is your goal to win nationals competions then there is a risk. I think Judo has be more playful in randori

I spoke to EMT first responder and asked him- Which art is more dangerous -. My kids do both Judo and BJJ and I recognized the EMT at a BJJ tourney after seeing him at many Judo tourneys. His response was, "Judo. No question. More injuries and more catastrophic injuries." - Keep in mind this is was him commenting about Judo and BJJ at Tournaments.

It seems like the club plays a big role in this question. The BJJ curriculum seems more standardised, judo has more variety in the quality/safety of training sessions. We had an over 50s course that ran safely without issues, but we thought very carefully about how to do this. Most clubs just throw you at the lions no matter what age :(

@@OGFITNESS oh it was a lot more patience in the warmup, and keeping it playful. Anything to stop an ego from developing. If you let people focus on movement & coordination, that gives them the tools to outsmart their training partner without concentrating on brute force. Good for all ages really :)

@@bla7091 that makes a whole lot of sense, very smart. longer warmup, movement/coordination work, and keep it playful. From what i’ve seen i think kid classes have a similar structure.

No doubt knees and shoulders are the most common injuries, lower back problems are also pretty common. I had a partially detached retina and a punched nerve in my neck at one time also. I cannot compare to jiu-jitsu never having done it but judo is much safer than rugby which is what I did up to my mid thirties. Rugby injuries are primarily knee and shoulder as well but they tend to be much more serious with many cuts and broken bones sometimes

I´ll continue, although I will just be careful. ;) I really appreciate this kinda videos where you guys discuss the hazards and risks connected to martial arts. Maybe it sucks as a motivation, but you guys are helping the rest of us stay away from injury (or, to put it more positively, be free and healthy ;) ).

Think of it this way, if you walk into it knowing the risk, you wont be butt hurt when it happens and quit like a lot of people, and just being aware of the inherent risk will make you be smarter about the whole thing and you might not even get busted up that bad. And like anything, the deeper your understanding of something, the less you fear it.

I thought the same. I don't think the limbs get entangled standing that much though since after banning entanglement techniques in competition. The most dangerous thing in judo is beginners or people with ego attached to their belt. For beginners they don't know how to relax when thrown like he said, and also they don't know how to throw properly, they use too much force on other people instead of technique. For people with ego they consider it win/lose and their status can't have "losing" even for practice. However, big emphasis on judo is in safety and it's becoming even more emphasized nowadays when it's becoming a business in America. No randori for a long time because you gain nothing as a hobbyist and just high risk. You never do joint locks or strangles seriously in practice, you don't attempt to make them submit (you do increase pressure but slowly and there's safety instructions before). If you avoid competitions and the instructor doesn't make beginners do randori. And understanding that if you don't practice in competition group, you don't go 100% in randori like beginners. Randori is still "mutual benefit", it's free practice but you're supposed to still be training technique and transitions, you're not there to win practice. Especially the higher your belt is, the less ego you should have and the more you're supposed to give to the partner, giving them chances to play, giving them tips, practicing techniques you don't know as well yet, keeping your partner safe. Like there was a time I was a yellow belt playing with an older blue belt and he did punish me for mistakes, but he constantly gave me tips and after every exchange he explained something and he let me try things, go for grips and initiations and didn't just try to win, breaking my grips and slamming me. That's real judo attitude. And there was this 120 kg dude who competed regularly, weighed half more than I do, and he did the same thing. Let me practice even though he had massive advantage, even gave tips how to play against him in that difference.

I’m currently taking judo. I plan sticking with it as long as I can, but I think once I achieve my black belt, I’ll start cross training in bjj. Judo is rough. My first months in, I threw a guy but he posted his knee, and I ended up falling into it and breaking my ribs. I’ve since developed shoulder and knee pain like what was talked about, but also wrist pain. Haha! I love judo though.

Judo is definitely MAN’S SPORT! LOL I started judo at age 12 and stopped when I entered college, but could only get back to it at age 48. I have the advantage of having the muscle memory and also that I’m also learning aikido and karate, so I have experience in falling and probably enough strength so resist attacks, but get hurt on my knees from time to time.

Judo done in the right environment, the right way is safer than BJJ. BJJ wears the joints out slowly. One year, you start BJJ; the next, you can’t reverse your car safely for some reason. Safety is high priority in judo. Safety is not a priority in BJJ, because people assume that if you tap early, you are safe. Knee issues with judo? Hmmmmmmm, BJJ has a whole game based around destroying the knee. Judo changes rules to protect the knee.
