Judy Collins sings "Simple Gifts" for the February 1963 TV broadcast of Dinner with the President, the 50th anniversary celebration of B'nai B'rith in Washington, D.C. President Kennedy received a Democratic Legacy Award and spoke during the broadcast. Several years later, Judy recorded "Simple Gifts" for her 1970 Whales and Nightingales album.

Straight shift dress on her first album, greatest singer-songwriter ever. I was 11 when she came into my life, 63 when I last saw her, more beautiful and singing better than ever.

Remember, a Shaker song. The Shakers were a 19th Century American religious community. They are often maligned, but shouldn't be. It was a different age, and this song reflects the truth they were seeking. There are other words as well. You can find them.

It is a Shaker song; composed in 1848 written and composed by Elder Joseph Bracket. Aaron Copeland used it in his Appalachian Spring.1944.

Music and words are actually from the hymn book of the early American religious group know as the Shakers. Copland inserted it into his music. Tune is probably much older than that used by the Shakers.

This song was written by Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett in 1848. He was a member of the Maine Ministry, governing the Sabbathday Lake and Alfred Shakers. The Sabbathday Lake Shakers remain today.

Nice try but no, it is not. "Simple Gifts" is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. It has endured many inaccurate descriptions. Though often classified as an anonymous Shaker hymn or as a work song, it is better classified as a dance song. Several Shaker manuscripts indicate that this is a "Dancing Song" or a "Quick Dance." "Turning" is a common theme in Christian theology, but the references to "turning" in the last two lines have also been identified as dance instructions. When the traditional dance is performed properly, each dancer ends up where he or she began, "come 'round right."
