This shows the difference between a singer and a performer. It was a week or so after the assassination of JFK who was a friend of hers, and she’d been advised not to perform it, but being the goddess that she is, she did what she wanted to do anyway, and it’s surely the defining version of this song?! Absolute legend!

This was in February 1964. Not a week after the assination of JFK. CBS wouldn't let her do it that close to his death.

@@cindybaum37 It was December 13th 1963. So my memory was wrong but it was only about 3 weeks later.

YES!!! If a person sees this n doesn’t “get” Judy, nothing will help them see it. Here u can see her transform or become one with the Spirit n her voice becomes the one of her youth rallying people in WWII, but by the end she’s channeling the whole effin Republic going back to Lincoln! Part her artistry. Part the Spirit!

*~ Judy was a G.O.A.T. ~ She could do it all through much pain and abuse in her life; a huge star and talent phenomenon; many of us grew up watching her movies on TV and "The Wizard of Oz" played yearly on television for many years ~ Best ~*

*~ Not to forget the PROLIFIC output of recorded songs by Judy, starting in 1935 lasting through the early 1960s, the many albums and radio appearances. She was always working; How she did it through her drug addictions and the many abuses she suffered is truly remarkable. It has been stated that she had a photogenic memory. Judy was brilliant. ~*

FYI - CBS cut her comment before she started singing, ‘this is for you Jack,’ They were friends and talked on the phone. he would request she sing ‘Over the Rainbow as a sign off. how she managed to get through this performance, I don’t know - guess that was just her magic and she she was certainly magical

So I see the main stream media was still as much of aholes as they are today. SMH. What in the world would they have a reason to cut that out that she wanted to sing it for our president? I hate the MSM. Love Judy and loved President Kennedy.

I'm really glad that you didn't cut her performance into parts. As you know, she has got to be seen from beginning to end. I've subbed your channel.

wanted to add context: this song was a Union chant during the Civil War. this is particularly noticeable in the line “as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free”

She was a lifelong Democrat and close friend of JFK. Imagine the grief she sang through here, but her greatest gift was her ability to pour her personal joy and grief into her performances. It’s what made Judy Judy, but what a toll it must’ve taken. She had to sing just a day or so after her own father died. She was just shy of 5 feet tall, but her strength is still an inspiration.

I love your reaction videos. I've noticed you have some reactions from the Sammy Davis tribute. Would you do a reaction of Sammy Davis himself? Here is Sammy doing a medley from West Side Story with just voice and drums: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNtylqmmrajOcqc.html Another great choice would be Sammy Davis introducing Hello Detroit on the Tonight Show for the first time: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edVimLJi38iyZpc.html

@@J.Fro90 I'm more amazed at Judy than ever. People have often written "she could sing the phone book." Now I agree. I think she could sing "A1 Bathroom Installation" and the audience would hear something else, something from inside their own heart.
