I made my first JMCO tutorial in August of 2007, eleven years ago, and it has nearly a half-million views. Nevertheless, I think this one is considerably better, and invite you to use it to learn this amazing technique which is the brainchild of my esteemed friend and colleague, Judy Becker.

I learned from Cat and always enjoyed her company. She died to soon and I miss her humor and her love of teaching. I cried when I first heard her voice on this video. Love you. Thanks for all the good times!

Golly how I miss Cat! Grateful her channel is still available to not only reference things I've not used in a while but also to hear her calm and peaceful voice and demeanor while teaching. I've never thought to tie the end to the yarn before, what a great idea! Cat you still teach and inspire us from Summerland.

This is such a helpful tutorial. No excess chatter, just here is how you do it, broken down into appropriate steps with a printed recall of process. Thank you for reposting this. Thank you, thank you!

It’s hard to accept that Cat is gone, but here I am referencing Judy’s Magic Cast-On because it’s been so long since I cast on Toe-Up that I needed a refresher. You will always be my most fun and sweetest teacher. Jenny I always reference your Mother’s videos and I hope that I will still get the chance to continue to do so in the future. ❤️💜

I like your use of this cast-on for toe up socks. The smaller number of starting stitches, increased, makes for a nice rounded toe, without the bumps from the increases of other ways of knitting socks. Blessings!❤️

Having my students describe what is happening in their own words is one of the most amazing teaching tools I uncovered. You can give them mantras and cute little rhymes all you want, but nothing makes it stick for them like their own description. Much clearer than your old video!

To me, it's the same action for both needles. Yarn comes up the front side of the needle and down over its back.

Suppose I want to be able to knit the first round through the back loops, so I want all the cast on stitches to be mounted with the leading leg in back (so ktb will correct them)? I know Judy Becker's video says it doesn't matter how you wrap because you can correct backwards-mounted stitches, but which way do I wrap to *get* backwards mounted stitches? My brain is getting all twisted up! 😄
@CatBordhiDesigns
@CatBordhiDesigns 6 жыл бұрын
Judy's original presentation on Knitty many years ago was done that way. Mine mounts everything traditionally.

Having the two colors really helps. But...could you use a solid background next time. I found the grid distracting. Otherwise, great tutorial!

I can't believe I have been doing this wrong all along. I have always mirrored the top stitches to the bottom instead of coming in through the middle. They always come out looking good but man do I feel silly

This is how to start socks? Or can it be used for anything circular and magic loop knitting? It’s been a while since I knitted in the round, sorry to sound stupid.
@sukubo313
@sukubo313 6 жыл бұрын
You can use it to start anything round that’s basically two flat pieces joined at the edges, like a sock or a non-pleated bag. You wouldn’t want to use it for a hat (other than a garrison hat knit top down). It wouldn’t work for a sweater at all because it’s closed at the end. It makes a pouch, not a tube. It also can be used as a cast-on for flat double knitting if you use two different yarns tied together at the point of your first stitch, though you need to rearrange the stitches onto one needle afterward.
@Carol-Bell
@Carol-Bell 6 жыл бұрын
Billy0721 thank you! I want to make leg warmers, which is a tube, and probably should use magic loop on circulars... just need a “refresher” in my head
@sukubo313
@sukubo313 6 жыл бұрын
Gerrie Louden Bell Right, JMCO wouldn’t work for that. I would use a stretchy cast on, probably the Old Norwegian/Twisted German cast on, and join in the round. Plain old long tail will also work as long as you don’t cast on too tightly. Happy knitting.

No question is stupid. Trust me. Right now I am viewing this as a way to cast on for a hat.
