I was at that concert! When I went to take a leak after the concert, Jaco was taking one right next to me :-). On the same night, there were Art Blakey and Klaus Doldingers Passport, two days earlier, there were Billy Cobham-George Duke, with the young John Scofield and McLaughlin's Shakti, two days later Stan Getz, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, the next day Sarah Vaughn. We slept in the courtyard of the Montreux casino. My god, those were the days...

@@allinthemind2006 Yes, I did. And we also talked. My parents, the trumpetplayer Oscar Klein and my mother, jazzsinger Miriam Klein, grew up with Joe Zawinul in Austria. So I told Jaco to tell Joe that I'm here and to let me go backstage to say hello. Jaco answered: «I cannot tell Joe to let you come backstage, but I could certainly ask him.» I got a free english lesson from the amazing Jaco Pastorius :-).

I was thinking the same thing. Except for the word "talent". I was wondering if it would EVER be possible to witness something like this again? Probably not. But, I would be happy to be proven wrong. But, with only 674,000 some views since 2012, what are the chances another group of musicians getting this diverse, creative, and motivated for some serious killer jams still in the vicinity of Jazz.

It was an incarnation of WR I did not like quite as much as this one but if we're just talking about the expression on Zawinul's face, I think there were some moments with Omar Hakkim where he looked a bit happier. There's a Tokyo concert I'm thinking of (avail here on YT) Regardless, I think there's no question he was proud of having the best band in existence.

Forty-three years ago....Jaco stunned The bass community, much like Scott LaFaro did with Bill Evans... NO one played like that before, just a standard vintage Fender Jazz Bass, but with a defretted and coated fingerboard, ans Rotosound stainless round wound strings... the lines, technique, his use of harmonics.... Now, it seems like EVERY new 'bass star' or 'phenom' is just imitating him, and his sound. Bill Milkowski's book on Jaco's life is a great read.

I saw them during the Heavy Weather tour. At the time, I was about 27 and still trying to be the bast bassist I could. That night I heard/saw this punk guy named Jaco. I handed him my hopes for the bass that night. He was doing stuff with that Jazz Bass that no one else was. Within a couple of years, you could not escape his sound on every fusion record there was. I completely agree Dave with your assessment. He did a solo section with an Echoplex and the rig shown that rearranged my world musically, and I had been gigging for a living for 5 years before that.

I love how he altered his Bass to make it play the way he wanted it to play. Try playing a "fretless" Bass like that. No one playing either before or since even comes close to Jaco. Those were the good old days when music was amazing & musicians had real talent, unlike the crap around today. Thank you Jaco & the crew of Weather Report for the great music that you gave the world.

what fabulous musicians!!! Jaco and Wayne, the whole band, great musical imaginations; There's no music like that nowadays, only goats' bleating their moronic, repetitive noises that have absolutely nothing to do with music. Sad times we live in.

@hughjarrse
@hughjarrse 5 жыл бұрын
@Wadsmitter the classical technique is different, classical is a stop and thumb pluck affair Van Halen hammers the string onto the fret at the appropriate interval, Eddie didn't invent too many techniques he just made the world aware of them☺
@rjlchristie
@rjlchristie 5 жыл бұрын
@@hughjarrse "Van Halen hammers the string onto the fret " You appear to be describing VH's "tapping" technique. Harmonics are a different thing.
@hughjarrse
@hughjarrse 5 жыл бұрын
@@rjlchristie you're missing the point I was trying to get across, Van Halen sometimes taps between the frets which gives you the note at the interval between the hammered note and the fret (or nut) below. The other technique he uses is tapping directly onto the fret giving harmonics , Jaco isn't tapping the harmonic

Probably captures the time when this all came together for Weather Report. This was a storm OK. Zawinal actually really enjoying himself, he got Jacko with him and the rest of the greatest line up innit. All the line ups that joe had were all full of great players and its all worth watching BUT this is actually the genuine article.

Everyone who's compalining about the camera work: When have you seen an instrument that close? Jaco got a whole solo. Stop being bass greedy. It's a BAND and a compilation of cuts. They chose from SEVERAL cameras and the matched the audio. The music is fine, no distortion, the video is a bonus. .
