I heard him perform this in New Zealand with the NZSO back in around 1991 - spellbinding.

I first heard Bream do Concierto de Aranjuez in about 1972. I listened to him and John Williams a fair bit for a humble rock & blues guitar player. Having lived in San Diego for 37yrs I took the opportunity to see the Romeros several times. They were/are a gift to the people of San Diego. Yet I had never heard this piece until this evening when I stumbled upon it on the car radio. I tuned to the classical station in San Antonio where I now live as it was about 2/3 of the way through it. I was immediately blown away by both the playing and the composition. When the announcer said the name of the composition and performer I kept repeating them to myself so I wouldn't forget. I pulled into my driveway and immediately found on my phone that it had been Ricardo Gallen. I found it on KZfaq and listened to it 3 times before seeing your posting and learning that it had been written for Bream and that you had posted a recording of his first performance of the piece conducted by the composer - Wow! I am sure that Bream fans the world over are forever grateful to you, as am I.

Great story, glad you found the recording. You might like the Sonata Brouwer wrote for Bream and also the concerto he wrote for Williams (Toronto concerto) if you fancy a further occasional bit of diversion from rock and blues guitar.

@@selfTaughtGirl Thanks for the additional tips, and I'll get to them sooner rather than later, as arthritis has diverted me from much playing these days😉

Glad you are enjoying them. Hope to put up some more over the coming months as I have a new cassette tape deck allowing me to start doing the digital transfer again.

Thank you for these recordings. I have enjoyed them very much, particularly Bream's concerts! His performances of De Visée's A major suite and Searle's Five were incredible!! Hearing his interpretation of In the Woods by Takemitsu would be wonderful, I can't find a recording of it but I know he performed it! His performance of Introduction and Caprice by Regondi would also be a treat... I hope you have more of them!

I've a number yet to transfer, but I don't know if I'll come across any more Bream one's still lurking at the back of my cupboard. I heard Bream playing Muir Woods at one of his concerts in 2000, it was the highlight of the programme for me. The Radio Times archive doesn't list Bream having played it (or the Regondi) on radio unfortunately.

@@selfTaughtGirl It seems that Julian had nothing left to play... Even the Ginastera Sonata, Barrios Cathedral, the Piazzolla pieces... He will be allways so deeply missed.

It obviously doesn't matter that it is a collection of ugly and disturbing sounds. It may be historic but I won't be spending my time relistening to this thing. Some of us are not looking to music for a shock treatment.

In that case I wouldn't recommend Brouwer's concerto #1 which is quite plinky-plonk stuff (not sure that is the technical term though!).
