If you don't learn vosotros, you're not learning Spanish. You must learn all conjugations because you will probably hear a Spaniard and you must understand what he's saying. Even if you will never use it, you must understand every conjugation. Now, let's see... si no os sabéis todas las conjugaciones, no podéis decir que habláis español.

Glevion tbh this might be hard for u to believe but I’ve never encountered a Spaniard. I live in National City in San Diego, CA, like 7 minutes from the border. Everyone who speaks Spanish is from Mexico or has Latin roots from Mexico. So vosotros is kind of an overload of info when kids are learning a new language, especially when the majority here doesn’t use vosotros

I live in the United States, and I speak European Spanish. Spain was the first Spanish-speaking country I was introduced to, and I have good friends from the country. However, many of my colleagues and mentors are from Latin America. They immediately noticed my European Spanish accent and vocabulary. We had no difficulty in understanding each other! Here in Puerto Rico we use coger the same way as in Spain, and we use it A LOT. I have some Colombian friends who say that's one of the hardest things to adapt when moving here. As a sidenote, in Argentina "guagua" is used for babies but here it is used for buses. I have been warned about never saying "coger una guagua" there, for obvious reasons.

That is an over generalization. Accents tend to follow a geographic continuum, and even within countries there are multiple regional accents that can vary greatly. As someone from Argentina, only the Rioplatense accent (accent from the capital of Buenos Aires) is the same as the Uruguayan accent. Go up to northern provinces, like in the northeast in Salta and Jujuy, and the accent will be closer to Bolivian Spanish. In the Northwest, in provinces like Formosa and Misiones you will have a more Paraguayan-like accent with heavier Guarani influence. Also, I don't think Honduran, Nicaraguan, Costa Rican and Salvadoran Spanish sound any where near close to Mexican Spanish. Mexicans don't use vos at all, while it is common to use it in those central American countries.

The Spanish language used in Spanish or Hispanic American countries should be called "AMERICAN SPANISH" and not "LATIN AMERICAN SPANISH" nor "LATIN SPANISH", that's a redundancy because SPANISH is a latin language.

Yeah, that's basically because USA people have appropiated the word "American", despite being just one out of the more than thirty American countries, so now if someone says "American Spanish" it sounds to some people as if you were referring to USA Spanish.

The thing with those countries is that although they have Spanish as official language, it’s a bit more complicated. It is easier to say that someone (a country) speaks a language than actually having a strong cultural connection with it. You see, in such countries like Equatorial Guinea, Spanish is in fact an official language but it’s well shared with other indigenous languages, one could even say they overshadow Spanish. And that fact is crucial because it let us understand that the Spanish tongue is a taught tongue in (this case) Equatorial Guinea; whereas in Spain obviously, and Hispanic America the majority of the people speak the language of their ancestors (or at very least, half of their ancestors). Of course there are still many many speakers of Native American languages, but they’re in some degree alienated from the mainstream culture. Spanish in Spain shares place with the other peninsular languages as well, an it is slightly different and complicated, but again there’s a far stronger bond between the people and the language that has been tight for hundreds and hundreds of years of history. In summary Spanish in Spain and Hispanic America is the language of the people and in Equatorial Guinea is the language of the official affairs, maybe school and other stuff, but not a language of their own. (Lets not even talk about the Philippines where it’s virtually not spoken) (Western Sahara? Is that a country?)

There is something else to consider. You mentioned that Spanish can vary even within Latin America. I've noticed that Spanish spoken in Mexico is different from Spanish spoken in the Caribbean. It has alot to do with the influences and the settlement of immigrants. Caribbean Spanish has more influences from the Canary Islands, In South America Spanish can vary. Rioplatense Spanish has some Italian influences and there are also words borrowed from the Guarani language.

Saludos

I live in Texas. I have a Columbian sister-in-law. She also has dual citizenship, and speaks English very well. Every now and then she has a hard time with some words spoken in Spanish (or the Spanish spoken by people from Mexico, which I guess is Latin American??) Texas borders on Mexico. We've always referred to it as "Tex-Mex." I can only assume an American coined that phrase because they did not know there is a difference between Spanish and Latin American. TexMex is a combination of Spanish (Mexico) and English. She also had a difficult time helping my nephew learn to speak "Spanish" from his Rosetta-Stone classes prescribed by his school, which he could access from home on his school's VPN Network because she said it was "different" from her "Columbian Spanish." Now I know why. I always thought there was a difference between speaking Spanish (eg, people from Spain) and speaking Spanish from Mexico, however I never knew what the proper name for the language spoken by people from Mexico should be called (Latin American??). Mexican doesn't sound correct, TexMex almost sounds like one of those words that is not a real word, but winds up being added to the dictionary anyway (like "ain't). Yet, Latin American sounds so formal. I'm going to Columbia in 4-weeks. I took 4-years of "spanish" in high school (a very long time ago) but we mostly learned words and short phrases. At this stage in my life, I understand it far better than I can speak it (and that involves using some pretty ridiculous hand gestures). There is no way I could carry on a conversation with someone in Spanish. I want to learn to speak Spanish in some form because I have a nephew who is part Columbian (it amazes me that he doesn't speak a word of Spanish, but from the time he was 4 he has been able to understand every Spanish word that rapidly comes from his mother's beautiful Columbian mouth). He is now 13 and still doesn't speak the language. I also have a niece who is part Latina (Mexico) and another niece who is part El Salvadoran (her dad is from there, and he speaks Spanish??) I think all 3 should learn to speak the language that is part of their heritage and Aunt Cathy wants to at least learn to speak some form of Spanish so we can practice and communicate proficiently among one another. They are all still young enough to start learning now, and they looooove their Aunt Cathy. Maybe we can all learn together. If anyone has the knowledge to clear up my confusion over what I mentioned above (Spanish vs. Latin American), can you please clear that up for me? All of that is very confusing. I am very proud to be an American, and REALLY proud to be a Texan. However, I wish the US put more emphasis on bilingual education. Students who become proficient in two languages have better chances of building more successful careers. Bilingual education also helps improve focus and attention span. 71% of the US population only speaks English. Until I did a little research, I had no idea of the controversy teaching an English learner to speak Spanish (primarily) fluently, or an English as a second language learner to speak English fluently in the various school districts across our Country. I have more understanding about that issue now, but I do not want my reason for making my comment to become about that big debate. Understanding and agreeing are not the same, and not every issue is black or white. There are always 2-completely different STORIES on almost every topic these days. In my experience, the truth usually falls somewhere in the middle.
