Lyrics of "Burlington Bertie from Bow"
I'm Bert
P'raps you've heard of me
Bert
You've had word of me,
Plodding along
Hearty and strong
Living on plates of fresh air
I dress up in fashion
And when I am feeling depressed
I shave from my cuff all the whiskers and fluff
Stick my hat on and toddle up West
I'm Burlington Bertie I rise at ten thirty
Then saunter along like a toff
I walk down the Strand with my gloves on my hand
Then I walk down again with them off
I'm all airs and graces, correct easy paces
Without food so long, I've forgot where my face is
I'm Bert, Bert, I haven't a shirt
But my people are well off you know.
Nearly everyone knows me from Smith to Lord Rosebr'y,
I'm Burlington Bertie from Bow.
I stroll
With Lord Hurlington,
Roll
In The Burlington
Call for Champagne
Walk out again
Come back and borrow the ink
I live most expensive
Like Tom Lipton I'm in the swim
He's got so much 'oof' he sleeps on the roof
And I live in the room over him.
I'm Burlington Bertie I rise at ten thirty
And saunter along Temple Bar
As round there I skip
I keep shouting "Pip Pip!"
And the darn'd fools think I'm in my car
At Rothschild's I swank it
My body I plank it
On his front door step with The Mail for a blanket
I'm Bert, Bert, and Rothschild was hurt
He said "You can't sleep there" I said "Oh"
He said "I'm Rothschild, sonny!" I said "That's damn'd funny,
I'm Burlington Bertie from Bow"
I smile
Condescendingly
While they're extending me
Cheer upon cheer
When I appear
Captain with my polo team
So strict are my people
They're William the Conqueror's strain
If they ever knew I'd been talking to you
Why they'd never look at me again
I'm Burlington Bertie I rise at ten thirty
And reach Kempton Park around three
I stand by the rail, when a horse is for sale
And you ought to see Wooton watch me
I lean on some awning while Lord Derby's yawning
Then he bids two thousand and I bid "Good Morning
I'm Bert, Bert, I'd buy one, a Cert
But where would I keep it you know
I can't let my man see me in bed with a gee-gee
I'm Burlington Bertie from Bow!
My pose,
Tho' ironical
Shows
That my monocle
Holds up my face, keeps it in place,
Stops it from slipping away.
Cigars, cigars,
I smoke thousands,
I usually deal in The Strand
But you've got to take care when you're getting them there
Or some idiot might step on your hand.
I'm Burlington Bertie I rise at ten thirty
And Buckingham Palace I view.
I stand in the yard while they're changing the guard
And the queen shouts across "Toodle oo"!
The Prince of Wales' brother along with some other
Slaps me on the back and says "Come and see Mother"
I'm Bert, Bert, and royalty's hurt,
When they ask me to dine I say no.
I've just had a banana with Lady Diana
I'm Burlington Bertie from Bow.

Her use of the props: hat, umbrella, cigar and lighter are fantastic. The sort of thing Fred Astaire made look so easy. It must have taken a hell of a lot of practice!

'Burlington Burtie from Bow' was the inspiration for 'We're A Couple of Swells' sung and danced to by Astaire and Judy Garland in 'Easter Parade.'

Julie Andrews performs this number sensationally. It is an absolute masterclass. God knows how many takes the hat to foot took but it was well worth it. She really is a marvellous performer.....and, although the film wasn't a great success....I LOVE IT.

When Julie performed this song again on her television variety show, *The Julie Andrews Hour,* in the 1970s, afterward, she showed out-takes of the "hat to foot" trick.

Julie appeared with Ella Shields, a male impersonator, who made this her signature song, at a Command performance in the late 1940s. Some consider that Andrew's may have been influenced by Shields in her performance in Victor/Victoria.

Julie is referring to Lady Diana Cooper, Viscountess Norwich (née Lady Diana Manners who died in 1986), who was a very prominent socialite figure in London for many years.

Julie Andrews has always maintained that ‘Burlington Bertie’ was the hardest number to perform in STAR! One would think it would have been ‘The Saga of Jenny’ where virtually all the stunts had to be performed by Julie, but according to her, no. It might have something to do with the fact that throughout the number she is the only one on stage.

Although Julie is a legend, it is touching to think that as a child she also was star-struck when she saw Ella Shields perform. Ella, born in Baltimore, USA, had done a "reverse Julie" - married an Englishman and performed on the British music hall stage. Her most famous act was Burlington Bertie from Bow which first saw the light of day in 1915, a song written by her husband. Julie and Ella even appeared on the same bill in the 1940s! (At the 1948 Royal Command Performance, where Julie sang the anthem at the end as seen on KZfaq). As well as in Star! Julie performed it in her TV series and concerts, she just loved the number.

Thank you so much for this fantastic knowledge, Chris! I had thought this originally was done by the great Vesta Tilly in English Musical Hall. I did this number - All over the stage !! 😮 … Replete w/ props… 2001 in Philadelphia… The stinking umbrella 😂 … I had gotten a guy to fashion it, to open up to the Brit. Union Jack - from a magic store - as best he could. Ugh.- lol😂 But the hecking thing opened up early on in the number… Lol… Prompting my mother, in the opening night audience, right smack in the middle of the house, too - loudly exclaimed: “O, GAWD !!!” Lol !! ❤. Anyway, for so many years, I have intended to get that choreography back into my body… Assemble all the props again - I still have that tuxedo jacket with all the pockets… & get it filmed. ❤ Julie Andrews forever ❤v!!!! And the memory of all those brilliant, fantastic Music Hall artists who preceded her! ❤❤🎉. PS: sorry such a verbosity! 😉. Everyone stay safe and well! 😘 🎭

@@virghammer1 - confusion arises because there was a song entitled just 'Burlington Bertie', written in 1900 and indeed sung by Vesta Tilley. 'Burlington Bertie from Bow' was a parody of that original, from 1915 and sung by Ella Shields. Different songs, different lyrics but both sung by female artistes in male attire. The 'Bow' singer is more down on 'his' luck compared to the Vesta Tilley song. :)

Have a look at the more low key and subtle original by the American Ella Shields. My Dad accompanied her on piano at the Sydney Tivoli in the 30s and 40 s, and at one stage she invited him to go and play for her at London’s Savoy Hotel. My parents both claimed she was the epitome of perfection. She was also, like Al Jolson, an “ artist’s artist”, always keenly interested in her own music and performances. She became ill during a last performance of Bertie, never regaining consciousness, and died a couple of weeks later. She was a true vaudevillian.

STAR! A Big 70mm Todd AO 6 Track Stereo Production from 20th Century Fox followed the success of "Sound Of Music" but flopped at the box office, such a shame in 1968 the public were not really interested in a biopic of the great music hall star Gertrude Lawrence. Time has been good STAR! it is now a cult film about the great days of music hall and a super performance from Dame Julie Andrews do try and catch it or get the DVD lots of fantastic extras including a running commentary from the great director Robert Wise who gave the world The Sound Of Music! They don't make them like this anymore FANTASTIC!

The Smith was not F.E.Smith, Lord Birkenhead, but W.H.Smith II, of the famous British newsagents & stationery shops. A famous politician in the 1870s/80s, the song "Ruler of the Queen`s Navee" in "H.M.S. Pinafore" by Gilbert & Sullivan was a nod to Smith`s time as First Lord of the Admiralty.
