Actress Cheryl Holdridge, who played Julie Foster, one of Wally Cleaver’s two main girlfriends in six episodes of “Leave it to Beaver” (she also played Gloria Cusick in two earlier episodes), revives her role as Julie 25 years later in this 23rd commercial-free episode of the Still the Beaver revival series called “While the Beav’s Away” that debuted on The Disney Channel Oct. 2, 1985.
Wally’s childhood chum Tooey Brown (Lucas "Luke" / “Tiger” Fafara) also returns in this episode in which he and Julie join Wally and his pregnant wife Mary Ellen (Wally’s other school girlfriend in five episodes, here played by Janice Kent), as well as Eddie Haskell and Lumpy Rutherford on a committee to put together a high school reunion.
The fun comes in awkward moments as Julie makes no secret of her continued interest in Wally.
Ten year-old Giovanni Ribisi (credited here as Vonni) shows up in a continuing role as Duffy, best friend of Beaver’s youngest son Oliver, this time letting “Ollie” take the blame for breaking the window of a mean neighbor while Beaver's away on a business trip. Meanwhile, since Oliver lied to grandma June Cleaver (Barbara Billingsley) about other troubles he caused, he can’t get Grandma to believe that he didn’t break the window.
This is the 23nd of 26 episodes in 1984-85 before the series featuring most of the original cast of Leave it to Beaver, including Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow, moved to WTBS Superstation for three more seasons under the name The New Leave it to Beaver from 1986-89.
These videos are taken from my Betamax VCR personal recordings of the show when it originally aired.

He's in several in black-and-white and color but they go by very fast, and he's also in photos on wall when boys come down the stairs at beginning of every show, but also hard to see. This show does more touching tributes to Ward, makes more references, and shows more clips of an actor who is no longer on the show than any other show I have ever seen in my life, so I can forgive them if they didn't do one little thing like this the way you and I might have liked.

Thank you so so much Scott Hettrick for posting the Still The Beaver NewLeave It to Beaver series I was a kid in the 80s and I use to watch this series on Disney Channel and Tbs when it called WBTS Superstation. Im not sure if Disney remotely drop the series or if Ted Turner just paid Disney a ton of money to buy off the rights to the show but I do know for sure that Ted Turner paid a massive amount of money for New Leave It to Beaver to be aired on WTBS Superstation back in the mid 1980s.
@shettrick
@shettrick 4 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome; glad you are enjoying it again. This was a Universal Studios show that they got Disney Channel to initially buy 13 episodes, and then a second group of 13 episodes, for total of 26 that they ran every two weeks and spread across whole year. Disney Channel was in its second year as a premium/pay channel like HBO at the time, and even though Still the Beaver was popular, it was expensive and Disney realized they would not lose subscribers if they dropped it, and could save a lot of money. This shocked Universal and the industry and everyone on the cast and crew. It took Universal a year to find another buyer - they were negotiating with Nickelodeon and others - even Christian Broadcasting Network. Ted Turner was having great success with reruns of original LitB on his WTBS Superstation and thought this would be a great companion series. The boatload of money he paid that you are remembering was his unprecedented advance order of three more seasons (74 total additional episodes) before he even broadcast the first episode. This would give Universal a total of 100 episodes, which was the benchmark for selling the show in syndicated reruns after its initial run ended in 1989 on WTBS.

@Smith Hart If you're asking who played Beaver's oldest son; that character was changed immediately after the pilot CBS TV movie to Beaver's oldest son in the series being named Kip and played by actor called Kipp Marcus - he was almost all 101 episodes of the series for 4 years.
@Attmay
@Attmay 3 жыл бұрын
@@shettrick I figured it would be Ted Turner willing to pay to have both this and the original and I'm also not surprised by Disney playing cheap on any more seasons; they'd just undergone a management change at the time. They changed networks before back in the 1950s, so even this wasn't new!
@scotthettrick9125
@scotthettrick9125 3 жыл бұрын
@@Attmay True, if CBS hadn't started the first season of the original Leave it to Beaver, ir never would have become a six-season series that became popular for 60-plus years. If Disney Channel hadn't funded first 26 episodes of Still the Beaver in 1984-85, it probably would never have started anywhere else. Neither CBS nor Disney Channel were being cheap - just strategically smart for their business and shareholders; Both CBS and Disney Channel went on to grow enormously successful without more seasons of Beaver. But I'm glad ABC picked up five seasons in 1958-63 even thougjh original series never ranked among the top 30 series of any of its six seasons for ABC. And I'm glad TBS picked New Leave it to Beaver from 1986-89 even though it was never a huge ratings success for TBS either.

They did air reruns for several years at least through 1991-92 in countries all over the world but then the owner of the company that licensed the syndication rights became a fugitive felon in Australia and fled to Spain where he died several years later, leaving the legal rights up in the air. Since then, no one cared enough to spend the time or money to try to sort it out, and now it's not certain if the master tapes were among the 40,000 destroyed in a fire at Universal Studios in 2008. Even if they weren't burned, no one knows or cares who owns it because it never did well enough in the ratings to generate enough demand to resurrect it

@Scott Hettrick, OK Scott, I'm hoping you can clear up something for me. Season 6, Episode 10, Wally asks Ward to borrow the car so he can bring Shirley (girl from Driver's Ed class) to the country club dance. In that episode, I'm sure I heard Wally refer to the dance as a prom. Eddie and Lumpy were going stag. Was that a normal thing for mid-western schools in the early 1960s to refer to a special dance as a prom? I know at the end of the series there was a formal dance at the country club that I always assumed was their High School prom. Thanks for any help you can give to enlighten me.
@shettrick
@shettrick 4 жыл бұрын
Wally does indeed refer to the dance at the country club as the school prom. In my experience - may be different for others -- proms were generally only for seniors, formal and held just once as the last big dance of high school, usually toward the end of the year but could be mid-year as Wally's was. Many schools, including mine, also added a junior prom.
