I first fell in love with Chateaux Margaux when an excellent vintage was presented to a friend of mine as a gift. We opened our first bistro when we were a mere 20 years old and it quickly became a success. Ourselves and our friends very quickly took to good wine when we were younger but up until that particular point had never enjoyed a true premier vintage. Anyway my partner had helped out in the opening of this new high end place and they thanked him by way of a beautiful vintage Margaux. It came with the advice, drink it now, don't wait. So upon their grand opening after all was said and done we went home and proceeded to drink it. Well, that was 'the' eye opening experience. We had thought our palates were fairly sophisticated by that point, boy, we're we wrong. I don't even recall the exact vintage of that wine except that it was more than 20 years old. It was an incredible experience. 'Oh! So this is what good wine is supposed to taste like!' Between that and the daily plonk you find in wine stores it's was a night and day difference. Velvet smooth with tannins so round they were perfect circles. It was a life-changing experience...mostly for the worst however. Over the intervening years I've had some stellar vintages of this, that, the other thing - Margaux, Pommerol, DRC, et al. - and every time I do it makes it worse that I can't afford to drink that sort of thing on a regular basis and have to drink the virtual equivalent of bathwater instead. To anyone who has even a remote love of wine. Do yourself a favor and drop the bucks on an exceptional vintage even once. You may curse yourself for realizing you'll never be able to find that taste again on a regular, affordable basis - unless you win the lottery - but you'll have known, at least once, what exceptionally good wine is supposed to taste like. And that it's not jive, and it's really worth the money. Margaux was my first love and always will be.

Hey Julien! 🍷😊🇩🇰 Thanks for all the cozy and informative videos. I really enjoy them. My first amazing Bordeaux-experience was a bottle of Prieuré-Lichine 2006 that I drank in 2019 which out of nowhere, when I closed my eyes during dinner, gave me inner pictures of old french aristocrats in front of a huge chateau. Quite a "trip" for a young hippie. I've loved Bordeaux wines ever since and my collection keeps growing. I drink a lot of different wines from all over the world and often when I search for them on KZfaq I come across one of your videos, that educates me and makes my interest in wines grow even more. Always a pleasure. Keep up the good work. Kind Regards, Andreas from Denmark. 😎

Hello Julien, I am a new subscriber in USA and I’ve just watched my second of your videos. I truly enjoyed them both, but would like to add a comment regarding smelling the cork. I agree with you completely about smelling the cork, but would like to add that examining the cork is also important. Don’t you agree that examining the cork for any wine leakage is important and also to read the vintage and often vineyard written on the cork. Keep up the good work… And your videos are NOT too long. Wine and the enjoyment of wine is not a quick pleasure.

I'm very grateful you enjoy the style of the videos. I've gone with a bit of a broader frmain gof newer videos, which I think works better to. I stopped by Stag's Leap WIne Cellars (there's a STags Leap WInery too I think which is a different producer) and really enjoyed the wines. Good stuff. Wrote a blog post about it to document on Social Vignerons socialvignerons.com/2016/08/27/stopping-by-at-stags-leap-wine-cellars-napa-reviewing-the-wines/ Tx much for stopping by. Muchas gracias Francisco for the love and support. I'm very grateful of your work and support. I guess it's true that not many (if any!?) wine commentators have actually made wine for several years in different countries before talking about the product which is probably what gives me some credibility and a certain angle when talking about wine. Have you seen my last video about Sauvignon Blanc and a trip to Sancerre: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p82InplesJqUdZs.html ? What do you think of that type of video? Or you prefer the wine tasting videos? This one about Margaux was my very first one, and I think I got a little better since ;-) I don't live in Bordeaux otherwise it would have been nice to catch up indeed. I live in Roussillon, near perpignan on the Mediterranean coast. if you ever come around this way, it would be a pleasure. You'll love Bordeaux. Get yourself a tour of Chateau Margaux. Not many know it but if you call in advance you can book a winery tour with a tasting. Most just go in front of the gate without an appointment. But if you've called prior, you can get inside the facilities, which i definitely recommend. I guess July is a busy season, so I'd book a tour earlier rather than later if you can. I worked at Chateau Margaux when I was young. Have you seen my video about it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i82ElaqatcfNknk.html ? I'd also recommend going to Mouton Rothschild if you get a chance. It' a nice estate, nice museum there. also made a short winery tour video about it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7elhMlm0eC9pY0.html cheers amigo. See you around

Fantastic! I am so glad to have found your channel and am now an (almost) instant fan! I just wish I had found you earlier. As for what you covered, the only thing that I would've like to see is the ABV level. Perhaps a bit nerdy of me, but I find it helps me determine the style of the wine and gives me an idea of how it relates with classic vintages. Lengthwise, this video is maybe a bit long, but not too much. I think aiming at 10 minutes is ideal but going to 15 is still reasonable. I first started drinking Bordeaux in the early 1980s and it remains my favorite red wine region. I still have a 1982 bottle of Ch. Margaux in my cellar. I also love Burgundies and stayed in Beaune for a few days though have not been fortunate enough to drink them as extensively. I will be sharing your video with friends both on social media as well as on a Wine Zoom chat I am in the process of putting together in two weeks.

wow, thank you man. Great to read your words, very grateful you've found the channel and you're (almost) a fan ;-) I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think of other videos. As you've seen, this was one of my first tasting videos, so the pace was perhaps a little slow. I think i've got better since. And yes, I generally aim at 10 minutes or less, but often get dragged by the talking and sharing as you'll probably find out with other videos. I guess it depends what's to be covered. It's more a matter of density of info than absolute length. But yes, for wine videos, ideally 10 minutes is great. Have you found other videos interesting? Also, just so you know, I also publish on that other channel: kzfaq.info/love/cKEdHaIX31LrywZmGwRUnw with I think some good series that we're developping that might interest you, and some wine tasting vids too. Did you see this video tasting of a wine from 1911!? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h52Zo7WXscWXmGg.html (and it's a 9 minutes and 48 sec video ;-)

HI there, thank much for the great suggestion. It's a great topic indeed. I'll see what I can do, although the great Chateaus in Bordeaux are generally not very collaborative when it comes to providing wines to make this type of videos so it's probably going to be tricky to be able to taste those in comparative tastings. Would be a fantastic topic indeed so I'll try. I can''t just buy the wines unfortunately, way too expensive for me!!

Bonjour Julien !

Ha ha, yes, I can see how it may sound a little strange, or least unusual. I live in New Zealand for 6 years, and I generally take more or less the local accent of countries I live in, even though there's always a little bit of French in there as well,, being a French national. So Kiwi English + French is probably rather unusual. That's me! A Frenchman with a big chunk of life spent in New Zealand. Cheers :-)

Cheers man. I lived in New Zealand for 6 years, so I guess it's more of Kiwi accent, although they have similar traits as you know. I did spend some time in Australia before NZ though, so could be some Aussie accent in there too. Worked mainly on Kangaroo Island, but also in Mildura and Margaret River. Loved it. Love Australia. I haven't tasted thoroughly enough that many wines from Barossa to have a favorite I'm afraid. Love the style but haven't had the opportunities to go through many producers and productions unfortunately.

Cool, tx Kyle :-) appreciate the feedback. Well, not many wine critics (if any!?!) are qualified winemakers, let alone with a winemaking background! I spend about 10 years making wine before talking and writing about it. SO, yes, I've got some scientific concepts around wine composition and production in mind that not everyone has. Glad you picked it up and found it interesting :-) Merci beaucoup mate
