People always mention Kobe or Jordan,but always forget about Dr. J. Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles.He is the fifth-highest scorer in professional basketball history with 30,026 points.The "slam dunk"(which he innovated),as it is called, became an art form and came to help popularize the sport and he was well known for slam dunking from the free throw line.Was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team.

I'm glad that fans who were too young to see Dr. J get a chance to see possibly the greatest, most exciting basketball player in history.

Dr. J had performed a baseline dunk over a seven foot-four Mark Eaton. Julius was thirty-six years old at the time. The year was 1986. At 6'7" and 215 lbs., he was the fastest small forward I've ever seen.

I wish I could watch every single ABA and NBA game Julius played.

I am 49 and former ball player. After seeing the Doc come into the NBA in 1976-77 he was responsible for broadening the total possibilites of what could be donec Creatively. He put the game twenty years ahead of it time. Whether he's better than so and so is not being raised. His greatest contribution is that he revoutionized the game and opened the fliud gates of possibilites. After seeing him play I was never the same!

I'm 44 now and proud to say thanks to my Auntie Regina for showing me Dr. J when I was a kid. We watched Julius fly through the air as he was her favorite player and quickly became mine. I love you Doc, and love you too Auntie, and I'll always remember the times and wonderful moments we shared together watching the good Doctor operate!

I'm old enough to have remembered the 1976-77 season when he joined the NBA, and he had a lot of spectacular moves in the playoffs and thanks for putting them here. One of them isn't here: a vicious dunk on a fastbreak in Dave Cowens' face n Game 7. The Sixer home crowd went crazy and the Celtics had to call a time-out. It's often put among his Top 10 dunks.

Being from Philly, I am crying remembering that era when the Doctor played here. Happy, happy times watching the 76ers compete against ANY TEAM in the NBA. Greatness was in Philly while the Doc played here. What a time!!! God bless you Doc! Thank you 76ers

Thank you sir for pointing that out. I was blessed because I watched him play during my teenage years in the early 80s. People don't realize that those amazing dunks that he did were from him playing serious defense like getting steals and blocking shots. He has more class in his Converser shoestrings than most players today have in their entire body.

Dr J ( in my opinion ) have one of the most beautiful moves aka handle of the ball in the history of basketball... I mean, whenever he does that one handed move of holding the ball with his huge hand, swooping it around without even touching the ball with his off hand, and either dunk it or lay it in..is literally poetry in motion...To this day ( correct me if I'm wrong ) but I have not seen any greats ever do that..I'm sure some might have done it once here and there..but Dr J does it with beautiful ease, and he seems to do it often..where it's so natural for him.. My favorite player EVER..the DOCTOR !!

Damn, you have some great footage. This was the time in my life when I breathed, ate and slept basketball. Dr J has always been my idol and Philly was my team. Period. I hated that they would get so close to the championship year after year and then lose to either Boston or Los Angeles. I was happy when the 76'ers won after acquiring Moses Malone.

Thanks for the memories, Im a die hard Julius Winfield Erving III fan. He did so much incredible things in Philly, but he had just as many highlights with the Nets and the Squires. I would never leave the TV when he was playing, I was afraid I'd miss something spectacular.

He never got credit for his defense. He was a great shot blocker & was great at stealing the ball. Most people don't realize that those great dunks were usually the end result of a block shot or a steal. He will always be my favorite player of all time.

Absolutely loved Doc from the first time I saw him in 76. Little did I know he had already changed the game in the ABA. Met him in Atlanta at a Sixers/hawks game in 82. Signed every autograph for every fan. Coolest dude ever. Class. He also crammed one over Tree Rollins that night that was spectacular.

One of the smartest basketball players on the court. His defense was always incredible, constantly stealing the ball. But his greatest gift was going coast to coast. As soon as he got the ball, no matter where he was on the court, he felt like he was in scoring position, lol. Once he got to full speed, nobody could stop him. And I mean nobody. He would jump however high he needed to to clear the defender by a foot. And what a great man, competitor and ambassador for the game. One of the classiest professional athletes of all time. The Doctor was the inspiration for every child Gen Xer back in the day. Jordan became the icing on the cake.

in these early 'sixers years footage, one thing that really stands out is how far erving could jump from the basket and dunk with guys hanging all over him, and with incredibe ease..one was from 12 ft. out...I've seen a '78 clip where he took-off from "thirteen" feet out and dunk over some guy..i kid u not, I wouldn't be surprised if erving could made a dunk from the foul-line with guys trying to block the shot..in his physical prime, "nobody" could leap from so far out with guys all over him..
