Matt, from the bottom of my heart...thank you. To me, you are an inspiration as a creator, an artist, a human being, a philosopher, a realist, a nerd...in a lot of ways there was a magnetism missing from my life (and, in extension, my D&D) that I found through your channel and insights. Thanks for all you do, especially this video. I eagerly await the next one.

Priest is brilliant. One of the greatest books I've read, dares to do things differently. Thief is also good, give it proper credit, but its good because priest enables it to be good with its beautiful characters. Your friend is right though, go bold again with ... Warrior is it next? Yeah, go bold!

In response to your comments on "being a good player" and taking notes: I am a first time DM for three brand new players (I've been playing 5E in 2015) and two of them take PLAY BY PLAY notes for combat. It blew my mind when I saw what they were writing down. They are writing down who rolls what, how much damage someone takes and what weapon is used.

Great video! Been missing your uploads, Matt! I don't agree with you on everything, but following & supporting the journey you've been on (and are on) has been awesome. It's definitely made me a better game master, it's allowed me to meet some cool people, and it's gotten me to start making videos again about my own writing and D&D. Looking forward to everything you do!

I'm just getting back into your videos (I got into your channel when a colleague shared your Western Marches video). I wanna say that while it might be true that for average, normal human being Matt, a Q&A video of 45 minutes is self-indulgent. But for the Matt the Writer, Producer, and Internet Community Leader; this video is a treat. Despite having the length of the video in the back of my mind, I still found myself immersed in your answers because your opinions often challenge me. I don't agree with you all the time, but your ideas are great even when I don't like them. Thanks, Matt.

That last question was heavy, and good, and I appreciated you answering it. Existentialism affects me consistently, and I often worry about where I’m going. To see you tear up on camera answering the way you did resonated with me enough to make me leave a comment. And I think I can speak for everyone in your sub box when I say we’re happy that you’ve gotten this popular, and had these opportunities for you and your company; hell you inspired me to start DM-ing! Keep up the good work!

As a proponent of startup businesses and a craftsman in my own right, I'm excited for MCDM studios and greatly look forward to each of their upcoming products (even the as-yet unannounced ones). As a fan and gamer, however, I do feel a level of bittersweetness. A certain level of accessability is gone as a great mentor moves on to bigger things. Like your childhood friend at graduation telling you they landed their dream opportunity in a far off place. You're happy for your friend, but there is still that sadness to see them go.

I'm quite honestly surprised your riddler video had some backlash to it because from my perspective (someone not into the whole superhero thing) what you described is something that actually hooked me. It thoroughly engaged me to the point where i would actually buy tickets for a cinema viewing which i haven't done for a movie in years. Guess it really just is different strokes for different folks.

Very wise statement you gave. I too if I could talk to younger self, would say .... "You're gonna be fine. You are an amazing person. Don't beat yourself up. You can do it." I hope others out there can tell themselves that now. Thank you for your videos and sharing yourself so openly. I really appreciate it.

Matt, in reference to the far future Q and your reference to the Fermi paradox, I think you'd love Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past series (sometimes known as the “Three-Body” trilogy). I bet you get a million recommendations, but let me say this is the first major work if Chinese science fiction to be translated into English and it's a major award winner (The Hugo award for best novel). Everyone else on here should read it too!

Regarding watching movies as art instead of as a consumer product; I most recently had this experience when watching David Lynch's Inland empire. For the 3+ hours running time of the movie I sat absolutely transfixed by the screen, with a gut feeling of horror and unease that wouldn't go away untill the movie ended. That movie moved to the very core, even though it is of a low budget nature, and low on special effects. The acting, music and visual story telling is sublime. A must watch for anyone wanting to just experience a movie as raw art.

Hey Matt, just wanted to say that I loved Thief. I think its especially cool how much you de-romanticize adventure and heroism while still writing a page turner. Hey Matt, I just wondered if you would consider making a short video talking about last week's episode of Critical Role, specifically the fight between the M9 and the slavers. In my opinion it exemplifies so many things that you have spoken about over the years, with them heading towards a very tough battle with plenty of prior knowledge, and how despite that and regardless of their decent planning, they almost immediately entered a death-spiral. Being in a group that usually had the advantage in action economy, they didn't see the trouble brewing, and it ended rather predictably in disaster. Would be interesting to hear your take on it.

Matt or anyone who can't get into a musical: Wicked is an awesome show for fantasy and world-building nerds, with good music, (despite also being an uber popular mainstream musical). Next to Normal is a powerful musical family drama that tackles challenging subject material while being easy to listen to and having lots of humor (this was on Broadway a few years ago). Most musicals are weird and only worth it if you're a fan of the genre like me. These two are great!

I have a couple questions that maybe you will see here. To you, what is the primary purpose of storytelling? What would you say to someone who feels lost in this modern era of conflict and divisiveness on one front, and on the other is a student who knows the vague direction they want to go in life, but feels lost because it's only vague? Lastly, as someone who wants to write, and wants to connect with people through storytelling, what advice would you give? Thank you for all you do, I appreciate all your content.

A few random thoughts: I think one of the weirdest experiences I ever had with a movie was watching The Matrix, thinking how it seemed like a painfully cliched and over-the-top action movie, then reminding myself that it didn't use cliches, it spawned them. I don't consider notes to be a big mark of a good player. As a GM, my favorite kind of player is one who puts cool optional adventure hooks into their backstories. It makes for a great way for me to draw inspiration for me to create an adventure if I have writer's block, and it also means that I have a guaranteed hype man when they see me fleshing out their own work. I loved the first Pacific Rim movie. My description of it is that it's basically proof that Guillermo Del Toro makes better Michael Bay movies than Michael Bay does. I'm not surprised that people recognize you often. I don't know how many of your subscribers are American, but if they all were, that would mean one in 2,000 Americans are your subscribers, and I bet a good number more have at least watched some of your videos. I haven't lived long enough to really personally experience a fulfilling but unexpected life, but I think I get what you're saying. It's actually sort of like running a D&D game, in my opinion. Yeah, it's useful to have some vague ideas, but if you aren't willing to adjust those ideas when something different feels right or when life/the players throw something unexpected your way, you're not going to do as well or have as much fun as you could have by being more open. And as for Q&A videos being silly and self-indulgent: you've gotten as many followers as you have for two reasons. The first reason if that you do what you love, which is sharing interesting practical and not-so-practical insights into things that interest you. The second is that wonderful voice that could get 1,000 likes with a video about the finer points of watching paint dry.

Just wanted to add, on the subject of our long-term survival: If you are a young person reading this, or a not-as-young person contemplating a career change, please consider going into engineering. If we are to survive, it will be through technology and innovation. We need to focus on renewable energy, and on new and creative ways to do the things we've taken for granted for hundreds of years. To survive, we need to be as flexible and adaptable as possible and that requires as many different solutions as possible. It's an engineer's job to invent solutions.

I have a question, well an idea I would want to get opinions on. In the campaigne I run for my brother the finall boss will be either the demon king or a paladin/monk hybrid depending on his choises. The question/problem I have thought about the three "stages" of the finall boss. First of, just outside the entrance to the cave there he(its a solo character campaigne) will face a dragon. If he manages to kill it he will be able to enter the cave. After some time of walking he will come to a massive opening there a world destroyer awaits him, a Tarrasque. In my setting a Tarrasque is created by someone by killing 10, TEN, dragons of each type, collecting their souls and also some of their components, such as a bone, scale or claw. After a ressurectionspell the Tarrasque is created, obeying the one creating it. If he survives THAT he will have to face the paladin/monk or demon king. Now, wich lvl would he have to be to do this without a rest inbetween? Or is it just impossible for a one man campaigne?
