I think once we're doing Running the Game regularly and the Chain of Acheron campaign launches, folks will be getting all the stuff they expect and they won't mind seeing Codenames or Nethack or whatever. Until then, the twitch stuff will stay on twitch.

"Many DMs will tell you that asphalt is the way to go, and while I respect that decision, here are some thoughts on cement that many people may not have considered: First is the connotation of cement. As we've talked about before, one of the fundamental philosophical delineations in old-school D&D was the boundary between the town and the wilderness, between civilization and savagery. If we had gone with asphalt in the parking lot, it would have blurred the distinction between the office and the outside. Asphalt shingles, tar roofing, all indicates that the office and the lot share common elements, but cement... that's the concrete jungle out there, you'd be a fool to go out without preparation out there, adventurer, a fool! Second is the palette, asphalt is black, but it's also warm to the touch, cement on the other hand is cold, uncaring, brutal in its aspect. People play basketball on asphalt, they run on asphalt because it's easier on their knees, their welcoming driveways are covered in asphalt, but cement? Nobody tangles with cement. Flak towers and bunkers, cinder blocks dropped from overpasses and crumbling buildings speaking of ancient destruction. However you slice it, cement has character. Finally, there's the construction of the material itself. Asphalt is a modern material, derived from modern petrochemicals, cement on the other hand, dates back to the Romans. Asphalt is completely out of place in a fantasy setting, but concrete can be moved back and forth through time without pulling players out of their experience, and it completely retains its foreboding, intimidating nature wherever it shows up. I'm going to put a link in the dobblidoo to a PDF scan of a fantastic article written by the laudable Michael Zeinhammer back in 1989. It was titled "road surfaces in fantasy roll-playing games" and he did this amazing breakdown of cobblestone, cement, asphalt, brick, paving stones, dirt, gravel, and more, including his thoughts on how movement speed and falling damage should be adjusted for each. I highly recommend it. Anyway that just about does it for me, next video is going to be on a subject very dear to my heart: wallpaper and paint, I think you'll like it. So peace... out."

My "BBEG" in my last D&D campaign was... an accountant... no magic abilities... no fighting skills... but he had resources, and used them wisely. Additionally, he wasn't even evil, though from a distance, the things he put in motion were certainly wrong or at the very least problematic. He definitely needed to be brought to justice, but in the end, it was easy to have sympathy for him. The place he found himself in lead him down a road he could not turn back from, in his mind. Anyway, was great fun. I love trying to move away from the norms when I can.

Not even halfway through the video and I'm already excited enough to comment! Archeology and the history of these games is just the coolest, I had an amazing discovery yesterday. I work sometimes as a pet/house sitter, and the navy gentleman who owns the pup I'm taking care of right now asked if I was going to be away in the evenings for anything, and when I mentioned dnd he got out this tub of all the old stuff he'd collected while dm-ing for his buddies on the submarine! It's the original box set, the red one, and the metal minis box, and four folders of his old campaigns, and a giant hand drawn map! I haven't been so excited in a very long time.

I've used something similar to the quick start cards in the past for a one shot, had the (experienced) players roll three times, that determined their class, race and background, then they rolled abilities in order, with the option to make one swap. WRT languages and translation- in the last game I played in we recovered a text in a lost dialect of an ancient language that noone spoke any more (we had to consult an expert just to learn what language it was in). Noone knew Comprehend Languages, so the Wizard and my Druid (who spoke the modern version of the language) had to decipher it from scratch, as a skill challenge over several weeks. As we accumulated more successes we got more accurate translations. The cool part was that the 'incomplete' translations the DM gave us were created by running the plaintext version of the handout through google translate and back several times (with more cycles for the more corrupt versions), with predictably hilarious results. It was really immersive as, over the course of several real life weeks, we gradually got a better idea of the what had been going on in places we'd visited earlier in the game, or how we would make plans based on information in the tome only for a further translation refinement to reveal we were wrong in our assumptions. Probably didn't actually take the DM very long to set up (since he was going to make the handout anyway), but added a fun element to what could otherwise have been a very boring skill check.

As much as I like edited content. I certainly recommend having a secondary channel or something to upload uncut versions of the board game plays. For a person like me it's always nice to have that kind of stuff to run in the background on my second monitor while I work, or just want to relax and listen to it. That same secondary channel could also store twitch vods. Because personally I hate watching vods on twitch (the player just is not very good for that).

Yes. This. Yes. More of the fun for the KZfaqs, please. Also, if it is a "company" channel and for the twitch "extra bits" I would not have a problem with ads being enabled on that channel...it would give us another way to support MCDM if we wanted without you turning on ads for the RtG videos.

on putting up gamenight videos: you could maybe make videos of the night showing a selection of highlights maybe 5 minutes long, then link to the full video in the description and have the full length videos not trigger the alert if that is possible

The character cards is an excellent idea! Paizo made their Strategy Guide with the same idea in mind. Might be worth checking that book out.

You can always make a second video dedicated to videos from twitch streams or other random things. that way people who want to see them can get the notification and see the videos, and the people who don't aren't bothered

I'd love to have nethack on here. Your vid of it you did put up a while back is one of my favorites of yours and I don't have time to be flexible enough to catch every livestream. Maybe put up a KZfaq vote for it because that will gove you actual percentages and more focused comments on the topic in question.

well done on the FREE character aids, THANK YOU! but as a fellow illustrator I'm sure the artists would appreciate the credit/breadcrumbs to their respective artstation/deviantart pages... (though, understandably, I'm betting you guys just did quick google searches+copy-pasted... perhaps for future awesomeness). Thanks again Matt! Long time fan.

I live in Australia and work fulltime, there is almost no chance for me to catch your livestreams, i don't think I'm the only one in this kind of situation.

21:00 I have an answer to Mike's question. I don't know if it's a common one, but I see it as being pretty effective. Instead of having individual players role for something that the party wants done, have one roll for the entire party, and then let their individual success be determined by their skills. That way skills are more useful and they can't just overwhelm the check with numbers.

I think you should deffinitly put your regular gameings on youtube, but as other people have mentioned, put it on a seperate channel. Watching you guys play is fun, educational and that but i’m mainly here for DND. Depending on how much work a seperate youtube channel is, of course. Don’t push yourself over the edge!!

Yes, you should add the nethack and game streams to KZfaq. I watch on my smart TV and Twitch's app is ATROCIOUS for watching old content. You would make me very happy. Plus, ignoring notifications is a better option for me than just not getting to see the content!
