These are really good. It's amazing how bad habits creep into one's technique over the years (lots and lots of years!) because against weaker competition, it's easy to assume that if it works, you're doing the right thing. Thanks for helping me re-establish quality control measures in my game!

It's the same fundamentals, but it's more setting diagonal than straight forward, either that or set it higher so the back row attacker can hit the ball.

Have been coaching for 20 years HS. You do a great job of breaking stuff down and the videos snippets of action are great. Was wondering if you could do something with players who are not jumping out of the gym and techniques for them. Also wondering your thoughts about double/triple blocking on all middle attacks and how you would rotate your defenders based on each.

Great video man, really helpful! I've always struggled to get a good top spin on the ball and the movement of the wrist when spiking a ball is pretty unclear and hard for me to execute. So if it was possible to get a video on how to do those things and practise them would be really great, at least for me! But keep up the goos work.

I wanna know like are you supposed to keep your eyes on the ball all the way through until you release or is it fine to shift your eyes to your target as the ball is entering in your hands. Cuz I feel like it’s easier for me to aim when like I’m looking where I’m aiming. Yuno like football or basketball same concept. So can I do that when setting? Or is it a bad idea?

Two part comment for anyone. First, would you consider the middle blocker action a "team blocking strategy error" at the 1:59 segment? Should the middle blocker have just taken off outside on this play and let the OH take the setter dump? No middle threat here. Secondly, have you ever run into someone whom has done a statistical study that approximates the delta (lets say team hitting percentage gain) between jump setting and non-jump setting? Curious if it is worth .010, .020, .050, etc. Most setters seem to gain offensive speed by jumping but also sporadically but give up some accuracy. Strategically, all the examples at the end of the video (except the replay of one above which could be a blocker error) had about the same effect as if the setter was not jump setting. By the way, I'll state a decent non-jump (or below the net) setting dump has the advantage of being used in all rotations. As a blocker, you don't need to worry about a jump setter who comes from the back row...
@hvaball150
@hvaball150 8 жыл бұрын
+HVABALL Also, and along the same lines, I count about 4 topics that could use some opinions (or facts) on as far as effectiveness. 1. Jump serve vs jump float 2. Swing block vs traditional block 3. Jump set vs traditional set 4. Percentage of setter attacks
@jogavolei
@jogavolei 8 жыл бұрын
+HVABALL Part 1: Team blocking strategy error for certain. The outside should have had the setter as his blocking priority and if the setter dumped to the left of that block, left back should pick up those balls. Part 2: At the NCAA level for the men's game, as a middle you have around a .08 seconds to close a block at the pins when an offense is being run in system from a 3 option pass. It is worth it at higher levels to jump set in my personal opinion, yes. Especially when it comes to involving the middle attack (front and back row). Not only is the tempo increased, players jump higher so they will need a higher set. As a pin blocker, if I see a setter set a 1 ball from the ground IN SYSTEM I'm going to trust my middle to absolutely stuff that ball or my back row read that play exceptionally well. It's night and day defending a 1 ball set from the ground opposed to being from a jump set. Love to hear your thoughts! 1. GMS had done a study showing that teams are statistically more apt to earn a point from jump float compared to jump spin serve. Again speaking from the higher levels of volleyball. If you're not a terminal jump spin server, float is the way to go! 2. What's your definition of a swing block compared to traditional. Over the years USAV has modified the swing block to where the arms are not actually swinging as aggressively in years past. Now a lot of people refer to it as the standard block these days. In terms of the footwork however, I feel it makes you quicker and more athletic. Primarily for the middles in today's fast-paced game. 3. We are kind of already talking about that in general haha 4. Elaborate more if you could!
@hvaball150
@hvaball150 8 жыл бұрын
+Dari Burtin Keeping the discussion to 3 option passes only, I'm interested in the OH Blocker positioning in front of the jump setter prior to set. What I see in many of the highlights is there is no commitment to blocking the jump setter (when they dump or could dump), marginal to no commitment to the middle hitter, and then the OH blocker streaks out to the right attack and either does not close on the line shot or drifts by the hitter whom cranks a ball angle inside the vacated area. Clearly it is in vogue now (like jump serving once was), but I wonder about the future. It is even more pronounced when the setter is back row. This started to drive me nuts watching NCAA women over the last couple years and the right side hitters started climbing to .400 and .500+ in certain matches.. When setting. I'm trying to dump twice per set in otherwise good situations. Sort of an experiment. I can hear the reputation already. Some matches you will see a setter dump twice per match (not set). I'm wondering how often a jump setter should be dumping in good situations and whether that is more effective than the jump setting itself. I'm thinking that you will want to jump set but practice contacting the ball at a point where it has broken the plane of net so a back row attack is a potential threat.
@jogavolei
@jogavolei 8 жыл бұрын
+HVABALL I feel we are on the same page but not the same paragraph. Or the same paragraph but not the same sentence. I agree with what you're saying as well about the OH not taking the setter dump seriously enough. The setter is a front row attacker so as a blocker you should treat it as such. In terms of closing to the pin in that same situation that you are referring to: since it is a three option pass I'll give the offense the benefit of the doubt as they are advantageous in this situation. If there isn't a kill at the end of the scenario then the defense should be happy I'd assume haha.

Hey coach, I've been hearing my vball mates talking about setting using either elbows or wrists. Can you maybe elaborate on that?
@cookieslimeee
@cookieslimeee 8 жыл бұрын
+Tommy Phouthavong So if you're pushing a set to area 4 and you are in say, area 2 or 3, you want to push out with your elbows and legs. This is used for any set that has to go a bit of a distance before dropping. If you're setting say a first-tempo spike from the middle right on top of you (A-quick), then you want to use your wrists to pop the ball right into the swing zone of your hitter. It's like the idea of using a claw hammer to put together a house, but using a ball peen to build a birdhouse. Power for one, and finesse for the second.
