Watch the AWD Transit jump a deep washout with a wheel in the air! Also drive under a huge boulder! Remember that the GoPro is wide angle and that flattens the ruts, rocks, and terrain so it is more technical than it appears, but still not too much. Very scenic!

AWD Transit Overland follows Jim and Katya Preston as they explore the U.S. West and could reach into Mexico, Canada, and Alaska in the future. Jim is a native of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California and Katya was born on a train in Siberia, Russia. They have traveled extensively since meeting in 1994 in Anchorage, Alaska and started traveling and camping in Ford vans since 1996. Trips included hot springs in northern Mexico and along the Alaska Highway in Canada to driving deep into the Brooks Range in Alaska above the Arctic Circle, and decades of road trips and overlanding in between.
With this channel they will show you their favorite overlanding trips along with exploring terrain that is new for them. This channel has three themes: Overland exploring quaint old gold and silver mining towns, remote backcountry exploring, and overland trips for hiking, exploring slot canyons, and mountain biking.
Keeping the vehicle weight down and the center of gravity low are critical for our off-roading adventures so we didn't build it out as a motor home.

Our interior build-out materials, including electrical, was about $7,000. Total build not including the $7,000, but including RV windows, vent, spare tire carrier, A/T tires, Van Compass hooks and rear shock lifts, off-roading wheels, awning, propane shower, GMRS radio was about $12,000 more. Thank you. Just getting rolling with these overlanding off-roading videos. This weekend we are attempting to drive the famous Kokopelli Trail from Loma, CO to Dewey Bridge, UT in our van. It is a mountain biking and ATV trail. Probably not possible but our video should be interesting.

Hey Jim, question about the clearance under the Big Rock. I have a high roof Transit (148 wheel base) not extended with a 2" lift and roof rack with fans on top as well. Do you think I would make it under? 4 weeks to go and I'll be on my way to southern Utah! Can't wait!!

I stumbled on your video. I am now your second subscriber. I have a 2020 Transit 350HD build out by Coachman as a class B van. Added a skid plate under my generator and just had the Q-lift done. Going to a larger tire after another 10K miles. I am 73 and have off road camped all my life. I had a 2005 Tundra with a FWC on the back. Got old and wanted more confort, I know the van will never be a rock crawler but will still get me off road. Looking forward to where you take your van.

Thanks! I've done mountain biking videos for over 15 years, mostly Moab, and just getting started with our van. Do you have AWD? It makes a huge difference. Yeah, we aren't doing rock crawling either, but lots of ledges. Our build is super light. No galley, no built in shower/toilet, and we upholstered the interior so mostly Thinsulate and fabric. I'm avoiding filling that washout on Long Canyon Road because I don't like to dummy down trails. Challenges like that are fun and hopefully van folks will have some confidence they can conquer it. My videos will be mostly shot in South Utah and I may do some remote Rocky Mountain passes this summer. The next video will probably be about our unusual van interior build. Another will be the remote Cathedral Valley in the north side of Capitol Reef NP. Also, I want to shoot the van going over the big ledges on the Willow Springs Road entrance to Arches NP.

I went with Jim right after this video in my 350 148" Ext HE DRW. Stopped after going under the big rock...was a lot of fun!

@@tjenkens Tony, you saw that narrow washout in this video. That was the only reason to turn around. The camera stabilized the drive over it but it was a pretty good bump and displaced stuff in the back interior. Do you think you could jump it?

What is your clearance in inches? I have a stock Jeep Wrangler with 10" clearance and I'm a little bit concerned about the washout where you drive under the big boulder.

I have about 7" at the diff but much more elsewhere so I position the van for that. In this video it wasn't very washed out under the big rock compared to a week before and I made it then. I wasn't setup to video then unfortunately but it did that shot of the van with a wheel in the air just above the big rock. You won't have any problems although watch the monsoon weather in August and early Sept. That can make all the trails "more fun".

@@thomza Thank you. I just got a drone and will be putting more effort into overlanding adventures with this channel. Tomorrow we'll be shooting Rabbit Valley on the UT/CO border off I-70. Dinosaurs and big red cliffs. Great camping on cliffs and modest but scenic off-roading. Also coming up will be Capitol Reef NP, mostly the north side Cathedral Valley.
