You guys have no idea the training these paratroopers got put under To even be able to call themselves that. Some didn't make the cut and these are those who made it. These are the best. These are the best troops out of any military branch in my opinion. They literally jump into hell , catastrophic war zones and such surrounded taking fire while parachuting and come out On top. Salute to these men and women.

I long for the good old days, getting up at 0300, coffee but avoiding chow, going to Pope, waiting on the tarmac for hours with chutes and gear on, waiting, finally boarding aircraft, waiting, taking off, flying around for maybe an hour, one guy who had breakfast vomiting, then another, another, and another. There's something about the stench of commit that causes sympathetic vomiting even among those who didn't have breakfast, me included. I couldn't wait to get out of the plane. I wanted to treat a joke in the side of the plane and Dave myself. Finally the jump command sequence, waiting, and finally out the door where I could breathe. A brief ride down and touchdown on Terra firma. Bag the gear, walk to trucks, waiting, drive back to Bragg and home, sandwich lunch, waiting, debrief, prepare for inspection, waiting, inspection, waiting, work formation, go to motor pool, yep, it's still here, formation, dismissal. It's an exciting life. What I miss the most is the anticipation of the vomiting. No one can vomit as funny as the guy across from that you told to not have breakfast as his eyes get bigger, his mouth fills up with stomach contents, his face became red, refer, his eyes bulged. You can't hold back partially digested food that wants to get out of your stomach, and then, bwaahargh, bwaahargh, bwaahargh. I'm laughing right now.

Back in 1966 when I was in jump school the classes were a lot smaller. So were the planes, C119 ratteling and rolling, you had to shuffle to the door. The airborne shuffle has gone by the way side, now they just walk out like exiting a bus. Still looks like a rush....

One has to wonder what the anxiety level on that first jump must have been like.
@michaelrs8010
@michaelrs8010 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I was a 19D Cav Scout, so I have no idea what military jumping is like. But I did 7 sport jumps many years ago and for me, comparatively, the first jump was easier because you didn't know what the initial feeling of having the bottom fall out, so to speak, and having your stomach go in your throat, as they say. Others mileage may vary, but that was my experience.

I could be wrong but when paratroopers drop into battle it is often only at a few thousand feet! sometimes less! you don't want to be a solider floating down on a chute nice and slow for very long you are just an easy target! sky diving I belive its a bit higher up their!!
@michaelrs8010
@michaelrs8010 5 жыл бұрын
@@stankinsteinfrankfurter9005 That is true. But I'm speaking of the initial feeling just out the door. And while all of my experience was civilian, it was also all static line jumping. Kind of a popular way for newbies or others just trying it out once to go back in the 80s. Oh, and for those that are going to do it either way, for both men and women, believe the instructors when they tell you that you want your harness nice and snug, especially in the crotch area.
@michaelrs8010
@michaelrs8010 5 жыл бұрын
@Paul Bradbury But of the jumping itself were you more or less anxious about that initial feeling you knew you were going to experience going out the door? I mean, not that it was horrendous or anything, but just that initial generalized stomach in the throat type feeling that was not something to look forward to. That was my experience in civilian static line jumping many years ago. I didn't realize how profound that feeling would be for me the first time so there was no trepidation about it. But in subsequent jumps, realizing it was coming, however briefly.... well, I don't know if "anxiety" would be the right word. Probably not. It wasn't any kind of fear thing. it was more like, "Shit, I'm not going to like this part, but the rest is fun so I have to put up with it".

Was on post for my third tour when that Major's chute didn't open after he jumped from a Huey down to the jump towers. I never could understand why anyone would want to leave a perfectly good plane in mid flight. As many mountains I've hauled freight over I still don't like being up high but some how flying in a chopper with the doors open and my feet hanging out didn't bother me.

Hey there shippy, were crazy too, just on the opposite side. While most of us wouldn't jump from a plane like our brave soldiers here, I've met plenty who wouldn't dare jump into a ship designed to sink. Lol. Seriously though, I get it. I salute the hell outta these brave summbiches. Thanks to you and your service as well.
