That hailstorm is proof of why Shoestring preferred grainers and boxcars. He didn't want his noggin drummed on!
@Jumpingoffthecliff
@Jumpingoffthecliff Ай бұрын
The problem with riding grainers is that they usually terminate and get humped in North Platte. So, basically, you have to get off and find a new ride in the world's largest train yard. So, I do ride grainers sometimes, but the IMs are significantly faster, smoother. and I find them to be a more comfortable ride most of the time. So, it just depends on what's available and where I'm headed and how much time I have.

9:40 'silos are disappearing' - maybe was that way, but one of the farmers I am watching just installed three huge silos and I agree with his plan. It does away with the tractor compacting at harvest, most of the spoilage during storage, and tractors to gather the feed each meal. They just finished the third silo and I am not sure how many tractors he can do without, but it looks more efficient than bunker storage.

Ever consider closed-cell foam pad? No inflating or deflating, no chance of leaks, quicker to deploy and pack for the outdoor sleeper who never knows when she or he might have to be on the move.
@Jumpingoffthecliff
@Jumpingoffthecliff Ай бұрын
I’ve used other pads, including self inflating, etc. I used a blue foam pad that was light weight, but didn’t roll up that tight. The accordion pads are handy and provide insulation from the cold steel of the rail cars and a little padding. I occasionally use an air mattress in addition to the accordion pad if I’m going a long ways. The folding pads stow so easily I think most of us end up using them.

Thanks for another train hopping video. The composition, editing, music flow nice considering you cannot always have the camera recording. The addiitional details of what you see along your travels is great. I didn't see any hazmat placards on those barges like you normally see on trains and trucks. As for west bound coal, the Reading Northern RR here in NE Pennsylvania ships a lot of local Anthracite coal west. It's high carbon content makes it useful as a filter. Covered and open hoppers are used, depending on the customer. watch for the RN RR name on the cars, it's probably anthracite inside. Stay safe.

Do you have much of a sense of how far a particular train or even a specific car will actually be going before a hop? Or is entirely guesswork? Do freight lines have schedules of any kind?
@Jumpingoffthecliff
@Jumpingoffthecliff Ай бұрын
There are trains that run every day between the same destinations and the timing can be somewhat consistent, within a few hours. Intermodal trains run between intermodal facilities and tend to be long distance trains running from the ports on or near the coasts to places like Chicago, etc. I try to avoid local trains, which are generally shorter, because they do drop cars off in the middle of nowhere.
