EVENT: A strong solar radiation storm peaked at approximately 08:00 UTC on June 8 following a significant solar flare.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
This was the strongest solar radiation storm since an S3 event in September 2017.
EFFECTS:
Solar radiation storms of this magnitude can often result in degradation or loss of HF communications in the polar regions. Space launch operations at risk; also slight risk to satellites. Passengers and crew in high-flying aircraft at high latitudes may be exposed to radiation risk. Radiation hazard avoidance recommended for astronauts on Extravehicular Activity (EVA).
