The 3rd variant was sometimes referred to as the "pickle suit." The lighter weight rip-stop material did dry fairly quickly once you got out of the rain. While I was in Vietnam (1969-1970) there was a change in how the name and US Army tags were aligned. We "old guys" had the horizontal tags and "new guys" had the tags aligned with the top of the upper pockets. Also worth noting in the change for rank emblems shifting from the sleeves worn on the regular 107 fatigues stateside and the adoption of collar rank emblems on both collar tips. Supposed to make it harder for NVA and VC snipers. (I think the snipers actually looked for the RTO's radio antennas and the Medic Bags for Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen assigned to USMC units.)

Do you remember when they changed from sleeve ranks to collar? Was it too long after The change in the way they did the name tape?

@@MikeB128 Although this might be lore. I asked a person I know that was Special Forces in Vietnam about the tiger stripe uniforms. He said originally they were home made by using a black dye with the standard OG green fatigues.
@studiesandobservationsgroup
@studiesandobservationsgroup 4 жыл бұрын
Shawn R that is a MACVSOG thing, they would dye Jungle Fatigues black or spray paint black stripes on Jungle Fatigues. Here is a solid reference site to use, it is ran and operated by the man Jason Hardy himself, ( specialforceshistory.com/category/uniforms/vietnam_unifroms/cross_border_uniforms/ ). Unfortunately considering there are over 19 patterns of Tigerstripe with countless variations and cuts I find it very unlikely that anyone will make an updated video or reference about it, I recommend you get the book “Tiger Patterns” by Sgt. Richard Dennis Johnson it’s like the Tiger bible.

Hello! Great video, one question. The color variation across the 4 patterns is due to original inconsistent dyeing? Or it is a product of natural wash and use fades?

Got a Repro of a 3rd type jungle jacket several years ago. Probably one of the best light weight jackets I’ve ever had. The Army should have gone back to the old jungle fatigues instead of that ACU crap; could have saved a lot of money.

Hey bro I have a og-107 jungle fatigue in olive green, with a 100% poplin fabric, no ripstop. Dated 1969, and the reason I am commenting this the label is “class 2”!! To my knowledge I always thought class 2 meant the camo. Is there a class 2 for the og as well?

They were used to tighten up the waist are for a slightly more fitted look. The waist tabs were brought back for the BDU and that's what they were used for on them, back for maternity uniforms were a big consideration. Remember, these uniforms were cut on the loose side for both comfort and for fitting a wider range of body sizes and shapes within the uniform's size. This means that someone with a broad chest and narrow waist can button it to the second button so that it won't hang so loosely on them, conversely, someone with the same size chest but thicker waist uses the first button (no real adjustments) and it won't fit too tightly around their waist.
