I’ve listened to quite a few reactions to these two and yours was by far one of the best. Give yourself more credit: you’re not just a *drum* teacher, you’re a full-blow *music* teacher, and a good teacher in general. Not only did you react to DOMi’s insane playing as well, you also took the time to teach us something about their playing, their musical background, the music industry, jazz itself, etc.

@@JunkdrummerTV You're welcome! It's us who have to thank you for your explainers. ;) And you know what, I'm giving you another challenge… How about you react to something a wee bit different (but still on the jazzy spectrum): Clown Core. It's a project not at all (*cough*) made up of Louis Cole (from Knower) and his friend Sam Gendel. You might want to check songs such as Hell or Existence, especially the videoclip versions (they're a whole thing in and of themselves).

This "if the amen break could improvise" vibe you mentioned is actually the main idea of a style called Breakcore which is probably the biggest influence for JD's drumming on this particular cut at least. If you hear a track by Squarepusher you'll find that what he's doing with programmed beats and samples is basically what JD does on real drums.

Yes, was looking forward to this video! I think JD is one of the drummers of tomorrow, but you can tell that he learned from the drummers from yesterday and today (I've seen a video of this duo opening their set with Giant Steps). He's already so incredibly mature with his playing, I'm so excited what we get to hear from these cats in the future. DOMi is just a little older, like 19 or 20. Really digging this duo.

6:02 While he doesn't seem to reference it in interviews, a lot of commenters bring up that what he plays is basically drum & bass or jungle. I'll go even more specific; he plays drumfunk. It's an obscure microgenre of minimalistic drum & bass producers who cut-up and rearrange breakbeats in 170+ bpm, making sure it sounds as organic and naturalistic as possible. Like an extended drumsolo. Like the song 'Ghost Notes' by Paradox. JD Beck does the exact same thing from the other direction. He often goes out of his way to make his organic drumset sound as synthetic as possible, with those heavily "gated" snares. And then plays these 170+ bpm broken beats.

I love all kinds of music from pop to folk to rock to Penderecki to fusion. These two right now have captured my attention big time. They've got something special going on. Also since you mentioned young drummers with natural talent maybe see a young drummer named Yoyoka doing her cover of _YYZ_ by Rush (a one take shot with no cuts that really showcases her skills). She also just co-wrote her first original composition, _Sparkling,_ with musians who have previously played with Prince and Dream Theater. At age 12. She is recognized as a serious up and comer by many well known musicians.

I love how this intimidated teacher sums it up to, “James Brown with a great left hand”, and EDM gatekeepers say, “he’s just doing what Sqarepusher was already doing”. But I love how no one mentions the fact that Sqarepusher couldn’t actually perform live. Every time he tried, he failed miserably. Which is why he went back to performing digitally every time he failed at playing in an analog context. Then Soulwax came along. So in the end, you’re saying JD Beck was inspired by DJ’s? You’re right

Yeah, keyword on sometimes. This isn’t rock, it’s mainly modern jazz, but even JD and domi don’t know what genre their music is. Regardless, it is incredibly original, initiative, and unique. Putting a fat rock beat, while great in most situations, would dismantle everything that makes their music amazing. JD is a world class musician, who makes a musical choice on every single note.
@pbelancsik
@pbelancsik 2 жыл бұрын
@@professoralexburnerofstone they know exactly what genre their music is. They’re going off of what J Dilla was doing with the mpc. It’s hip hop, which is heavily influenced by jazz. It’s difficult for me to believe that any musician wouldn’t know where they’re coming from
