Revisiting a skill shown a few years back, I demonstrate how to make a water conatiner out of a prickly pear cactus pad. Not only does this method make a container that can stone-boil unsafe water, but the filling can also provide food or an herbal remedy.
NOTE: If your source of water is muddy or has a lot of debris, place a bandana or item of clothing, like a shirt over the mouth of the cactus container, to keep the larger debris out before stone boiling.

When we were youngsters we used to do horse back riding and camping in Peck Canyon with an old rancher and your knowledge and wisdom reminds me of my early days spending weekends with my family and friends listening to the old time rancher tell us tales of the southwest about mystery and adventure. We learned how to spot wildlife such as bobcats and learning the lay of the land .

If there is not a beverly hills spa charging $200 dollars for it. Lets open one. The plastic bottles would be useful to store the water after you boiled it in the cactus pad. You could then be processing the next batch of water. Welcome back hope you feel better.

I wouldn't care for the ashes, but that water is not boiling, and it certainly would not kill all the bacteria, but I guess if you have absolutely no choice, this is the best you can do. (IE the water is not 100c, and even if it was, it isn't going to stay there for more than a second or two, which is not enough to kill all the bacteria in the first place)
@JunkyardFox
@JunkyardFox 6 жыл бұрын
The eater actually boiled for about 40 seconds but to cut down video time and not get too long, we shortened it, a rolling boil for that long is enough to kill the bacteria in that small container. You don’t wanna over boil either because then evaporation occurs and you’re losing drinkable water. Thanks fir watching!

@blurryflag6466
@blurryflag6466 6 жыл бұрын
oh yeah that's true, the elders where I live always says that, they love coffee on a hot day and checking on the internet i found this: On a scorching summer day, you're probably more likely to grab an iced coffee than a steaming cup of joe. But a study has shown that drinking a hot beverage on a hot day actually can cool you down. How? As you might imagine, consuming a hot drink does add heat to your body, but that heat actually increases the rate at which you sweat, which can help cool you off. The scientists who conducted the study believe that thermosensors lining the throat and mouth might be what triggers the sweating response. Of course, the sweat has to evaporate in order for you to feel cooler, so if you are wearing heavy clothing or live in a very humid climate, drinking a hot beverage won't help much. *But on a hot, dry day when you're wearing shorts and a t-shirt, hot coffee might actually cool you off more than a glass of ice-cold coffee.* so I think it's not a good idea if you try to survive and retain water on your body :D

Im quite confused, im pretty certain cactus contains very high levels of alkaloids which are toxic to the human body, yet you suggest to eat it?

Yes, Divert: cactus is edible. I never cared for it myself, but my grandmother considered it somewhat of a delicacy. If you'll wander over to the Tex-Mex food section of your supermarket, you may find "Nopales" or "Nopalitos", dethorned, diced and canned cactus.

LMAO Let me be the smart alec. I cannot see people drinking the ashes who lived at a time that water was boiled by hot rocks. I can see them developing ways to heat the rocks without getting ash on them though, because lye is rather toxic. Ash water would have been used in processing corn though (I think you have mentioned that before). But for other cooking, I really cannot see it given the health negatives, it makes much more sense early peoples would have learned long ago to not do it.

keeperofthegood other instructors using the hot rocks method for boiling water, advise dipping the rocks into a second bowl or cup to wash off the ashes, before dropping them into your main container. It could be a concern for long-term survival, especially for treating the large volume of water needed in the desert (at least one gallon per day). That cactus pad looked like it held about a pint.

keeperofthegood i actually have a video on making lye soon. I agree, large quantities of ash water would be bad, but the few ashes in the cactus pad or for a short term scenario isn't enough to make it a hazard. I've drank from these containers plenty of times and been fine. Though I can agree, avoiding ashes would be good. Maybe I'll elaborate on that during the lye video, thanks for watching.

Thank you Matthew Pittman and Junkyard Fox That is a good question Matthew, what is the volume of the pad? Will also be good to see the lye video too. The pad, once boiled in, is it cooked enough to eat as well or does it need some more fire toasting? Yes, human trash is hard to avoid but that's archaeology for ya!

keeperofthegood ash an carbon are known antidotes for certain poisons an sicknesses.
@keeperofthegood
@keeperofthegood 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, CARBON is, specifically activated charcoal. I know, I sat with my brother in ICU after one of his suicide attempts. He was fed by a tube a pint of it, and then made to vomit out the compounds he had swallowed, and was then treated a second time and that was left in him to suck up what he didn't vomit, and there was a third pint they put in an hour later as his fluids tests were still very high. Ashes are toxic. The few "on human" uses for them (there are a couple) are all external only, no consumed (swallowed). There are some really good uses to wood ash and any farm, homestead and survivalist should know them; food isn't one of them.

Great video great recommendations. Makes you open your eyes if you are ever in survival situation this is the menatlity to have!! The hot rocks idea is awesome. Except a plastic bottle wont stand a chance theyre gonna burn right through. But its something that can be applied not just on this type of scenario but others as well. Thx!!
