1997/98 was the first time in nearly 30 years that Real Madrid won the European Cup. Jupp Heynckes was their manager back then, and he was only in charge for one season. But it could be argued his one season paved the way for Real Madrid’s European domination.
How did his Madrid team play? Alex Stewart finds out.

He was not an elite tactician Whereas Van Gaal is an elite tactician but is a 3rd grade man manager Heynckes can inspire a bunch of lads but his tactics don't always work you can look at his dismal league campaign in 1997/98 and also in Bayern 2011/12

I think a lot of people have forgotten how good a player Redondo was. He was an absolutely exceptional deep lying playmaker but also just an all round brilliant, intelligent, footballer. I think his many injuries perhaps diminished his legacy a bit. As a Blackburn fan, I love Henning Berg, but I imagine he still wakes up in a cold sweat when he remembers Redondo nut megging with one of the greatest megs of all time at Old Trafford! @DEMONIC MACHINE it's true that their league position was poor, but Heynckes just couldn't work with the squad that he had. He told this to the then President of Real Madrid, the latter thinking that a manager not motivated to work with the players can't carry on with the job. He was reluctant to let him leave, but in the end he had to make that decision.

It's interesting that Real basically won their three CL titles at that time almost with three completely different teams. I'd even go so far to say that Heynckes' team (mostly the squad he inherited from Capello) was actually more spectacular overall than the 'galacticos' (who didn't actually win that many titles) later: a former world champion as goalie (Illgner), a coming world champion (Karembeu) and the topscorer at the World Cup that summer (Suker), plus another future world champion (Roberto Carlos). Mijatovic and Redondo were at their peak, Raúl was on the rise, Hierro and Sanchis were club legends. Panucci and Seedorf, despite being quite young, even had already won the Champions League before as established players at Milan and Ajax. That's quite a solid squad.

The influence of Lillo? that's a joke, right? nevertheless, excellent comments broadcasting by him... but influence coaching what teams? please, don't insult the rest of really succesful and influential spanish and foreign coaches during that period

Why 3 at the back fields 2 regular cb and a fullback or 1 cb and 2 fullbacks? before it was 3 out and out cb in the back 3.

Often its because you play a 433 if the opponent has regular possession, with full backs on their wingers but in transition its increasingly common (particularly Pep) to push your full backs inside to midfield (Cancelo did this vs Arsenal) and have your two 8s push into half spaces between the lines and between opposing full backs and CBs. A lot of managers do this with wingers high and wide to spread the pitch but you need your 8s high to make triangles with your wingers and the striker. So the personnel is technically 433 but in possession its more like a 2 3 5 (and full backs by and large are more comfortable as part of the 3 in midfield than CBs)

If I was german I'd be livid that Heynckes never got to manage the national team.

Well, he hired for smaller teams after his time at Real and he was kicked out pretty fast, because these clubs fought against relegation. So there was no need for the DFB to hire someone who couldn't make is long at bad teams. He was also almost retired, when he replaced Jürgen Klinsmann in 2009, for the 5 last games of the season. But the way Bayern played was so fucking good, that he decided to manage another team. Because Bayern wanted Louis van Gaal, he ended up in Leverkusen. After 2 seasons and being a strong contender in the Bundesliga, Bayern wanted him back. Because he is a friend of Ulli Hoeneß, he agreed and started his last 2 years of his career there.
