Alkadondon, That's a myth. Shot by shot, practical effects are far cheaper than CGI. They just take more upfront planning. With Practical Effects, one creature build can yield hundreds of shots, with the flexibility of allowing directors to improvise on the set. With CGI, you pay by the shot, and any changes are an additional expense. -Matt

People always really, really, _really_ underestimate the cost of CGI. I think its an outstanding time for a resurgence of practical effects...particularly in smaller budget films.

I'm a big believer in using CGI to enhance the practical instead of replacing it. The amount of time and work needed to replicate something realistic on a computer is crazy. Especially when you could probably get it done and out the door in half the time or less with a practical effect. Not saying that what you do is any less. (just talking about render/ simulation, ect.) Keep up what you guys are doing. I'm a CG artist myself, but I still love the physical presence of the practical side.

Hey Huntley, The T-rex was transported from Stan Winston Studio to the set via a giant flat bed trailer in the middle of the night. We were unable to cover it with a tarp for fear of damaging the latex skins and paint job, so it was in full view the whole way. To your question about the foam latex skin, unfortunately it rapidly deteriorated after the film was completed due to the natural properties of the latex as well as the extensive rain damage from filming. -Matt

it's unbelievable what you guys have accomplished with Jurassic Park. just as unbelievable that i haven't seen this footage before. sometimes i almost forget what incredibly talented artists are responsible for a movie like this to be so good. these artists are the main reason why the Jurassic Park films are so much better than all other dinosaur movies. i hope those people are deeply involved in the production of Jurassic World ;-)

OMG hahah i can only imagine driving in the middle of the night and then just like in the movie looking in my mirror to see TREX coming up behind me. what i would give to be on the road that night. Such a shame that an amazingly detailed and beloved piece of artwork like that dino didnt make it through the years. but it did its job and mesmerized me on screen 20 years ago and still continues to do so today. what i would give to have been able to marvel at it in person though.

You know what it is, I recently watched the Jurasic Park 4K blue-ray and for the first time in 20+ years I could tell the difference between animatronics and CG(In Jurassic Park)... The CG in the Jurassic park is noticable but the animatronics still look great. I really hope for Jurassic World 2 they go back to animatronics as a main game plan for the dinosaurs and use CG only when it's needed.

This is just jaw dropping. I remember watching this when I was young and JP was my favorite of all of them. And to think this was back then. Man I'm disappointed in JW they only used cgi and not many animatronics. This was the best project and most successful one universal has made.

I always enjoy watching films like this of the back stage shots. The skeletons beneath the skins. It's that organic feel to each one, the drawing from nature but not replicating nature that you guys do that just adds that spark of life to each creature. That's what I find most inspiring. Replicating nature only produce a hollow shell, drawing from brings each piece into reality and breathes an almost tangable living essence into them. Thank you for so many years of incredible work.

I find it quite funny how in the comments for science videos you see religious arguments, and in the comments for special effects videos you see CGI vs Practical arguments. I'm not going to get in to that argument, all I'm going to say is that the animatronic T-rex in these videos is simply stunning and amazing from both an art standpoint and an engineering point. Thank you for sharing such videos as this one :)

I wish everyday people could be on stage with an animatronic, like this one, to agree with the people talking in this short video. It's not like every day you deal with robots (yet) and you can barely build an animatronic at home because of M O N E Y. Life's hard because of the government, making people pay for things, ruining thoughts and dreams when they could be building things like this.

Whenever I think of the T-Rex and how it might have looked, 65 million years ago, I always think of Jurassic Park. There have been plenty of films done with dinosaurs over the years, but very few of them, if any, capture the look of the ones seen in Jurassic Park and it's sequels. Jurassic Park's T-Rex is both beautiful and scary at the same time. Stan Winston and his team did a marvellous job of bringing these prehistoric creatures to life. If we never bring dinosaurs back to life, we'll always have Jurassic Park to show us what they would have been like to behold.

I expected a retort as such. I agree with you. But essentially, what I was stating is that there are certain aesthetic properties that are unattainable with computer generated graphics. Practical effects will always prevail when it comes to realism-- no matter how "realistic" computers may make something appear. Nothing will compare to the real deal. Even on a miniature scale.
