Episode 81
Jurassic Park - The movie - set a new standard for visual effects when it released in 1993. Featuring a combination of skillful designed practical effects with cutting edge computer graphics, audiences had never seen anything like it.
Jurassic Park - The game for the Super Nintendo - was also extremely ambitious. At the time, two of the hottest games were The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and the original first person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D. Somehow the developers of this game managed to combine these two radically different gameplay styles into one genetically engineered monstrosity! You can even use the SNES Mouse that was included with Mario Paint!
So how did this game get made? in this episode we'll find out, then we'll dive dep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* How to complete EVERY objective!
* A trick for getting INFINITE 1-UPS!
* Where to find ALL 18 EGGS!
* The EASY way to get TONS of ammo!
* Where to find the NERVE GAS, and how to use it to DESTROY THE NEST!
* MAPS for all areas!
* Computer terminals - How to reboot them, and where to get Level 1 and 2 security clearances!
* How to access the SECREL LEVEL!
* Where to find every Night Vision Battery!
* TRANSFORM a Spitter into a Raptor!
* How to stop the ship, and radio the helicopter!
* Where to find EVERY ID CARD... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Fun fact: my first dinosaur dig - I'm a paleontologist - was working for Dr. Horner in Montana - 11 years after I played this game as a child and saw Jurassic Park in theaters, I was in Montana digging up dinosaurs and sitting around a campfire with Jack Horner. It was pretty epic, if I would call anything that.

The saminess of this game's 3D dungeons, alongside our narrator's pleasantly consistent cadence, lend this particular episode a sort of hypnotic quality; I know that sounds strange, but many of the best UCBVG episodes share this trait.

I love how in the movies, you can count the number of dinosaurs killed by people on one hand but in most of the games, you just commit mass Dino-genocide. Like, in this game, Dr. Grant is I Am Legend's Robert Neville to prehistoric life.

I would love for there to be a fan sequel to this game in a retro style, faster paced interior sequences more in line with the original PC Doom, more dinosaurs and locations, more weapons, actual boss fights, secrets. There's so much that can be done here, I really like the non-linear structure of it. Love this game but it definitely has a lot of untapped potential. For anyone playing this game today, I recommend bsnes/snes9x with their overclock settings, keeping the speed intact but making the interior sections super smooth compared to 15fps or whatever the framerate is originally. (personally use a Pi4 RGB Scart setup for playing it on a CRT with the original controller and everything, Pi4 handles this game perfectly and does hi-res blending without breaking a sweat, older pi models won't handle it too well because of that).

That and a little more in game direction. In The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past, people in the game would tell you where you needed to go to accomplish each goal. This game just says, "Grant turn on the power", or worse, "Grant, stop the raptors from entering the visitor center", to which naturally people will respond by going to the visitor center instead of the raptor pen. So much time wasted needlessly wandering around.

My memories lied to me! I always heralded the two greatest weapons as the rocket launcher and the tranquilizer, the only two weapons capable of putting down every enemy with a single shot, though tranqs weren't kills... and then i remember having to rush through nightvision areas because of constantly depleting battery that you had to refill while you were in it... and then, i remember there being a timer after you set the nerve gas that you have to escape from the island before it ticked out... or maybe it was just getting out of the raptor nest? That was so many years ago. I also don't remember being able to carry more than the starting ammunition for any weapon so i found myself constantly having to use whatever weapon was available

I love that Ian Malcom’s chaos theory equations in the chapter breaks of the original novel appear as animated backgrounds when you use a computer terminal. The roar of the raptors used to terrify me as a kid! Lol Another killer episode from my favorite KZfaq gamer!

Yo, first time on the channel and I gotta say, it’s awesome to see so much info and detail put into the very first video game I ever played! Gotta say, if I ever dust off this old fossil of a cartridge again, I will definitely be using this as a guide!

The game was really good. If only they had a save feature, it would’ve been remembered more foundly.

The fact that you only have about 88k subscribers and not like...I don't know...4 FUGGIN' MILLION...it kinda bums me out. You are a National Treasure and a Saint on earth, yo.

The DRHORNER message was part of a contest. I think it was mentioned in the manual or box but I can't remember the details. Also fun fact: The original US manual for the game had screenshots and mechanics for the game computers that were not in the release version of the game.

1:19:50 Very cool of you to mention this. This is only handy if you’re speed running. It allows you to take a death warp to back outside but like you said, still gives you credit for clearing the floor of dinos. And given all the backtracking in this game, it’s definitely helps

Excellent video! (As always.) I know the rocket launcher is more powerful, but I do like using the shotgun on some of the more complicated indoor areas. I use the dead dinos to tell whether or not I've been in an area, like breadcrumbs to find my way back out :)

I will never forget the frickin music from this game. It was laser etched into my brain due to having to play it for hundreds of hours.

This title had very different ports to different systems, Nes, this and Amiga/pc versions(all done by Ocean) were all different except they were mainly from overhead perspective while the Genesis one by BlueSky Software was a side scroller platformer like the Snes sequel Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues.
