It’s sometimes awkward in long lengths, the tape comes out to TRANSFER the measurement, the laser isn’t up to that yet.

No mate this is called a rail square, this one is off bangood, there are loads of different varieties

Is the clear plastic strip to stop water damage to the edge?

Yes it is but it isn’t flawless, water can still get down the sides
