It makes me wonder if there has ever been a better made saw. A friend of mine inherited a Super XL and was using it to cut countless number of cords of wood for decades. He owned quite a few properties that he cleared with that saw, and it still works like new today! Talk about a good investment!

The XL 12 of 54cc's and Super XL of 58cc's and some of the later versions of the same chassis were some of the best saws ever made for sure.

Excellent, i would love to learn more about maintaining the bar and chain. Not so much the sharpening but the filing of the bar, when to replace either and such. Thanks for making these videos!

You are in luck. Just take a little time and browse through some of my older videos, and you will find out about bar maintenence, the tools we use to do the work on them and how to identify the correct ones for each saw. Thanks for watching.

The Super XL's have both a manual and automatic oiler system. I used the manual oiler in this video a fair amount, made for nice cutting. I have never used a bow saw, as they were not common on the west coast, and have not found one.. I have seen videos of them cutting wood on the ground and looks like they are great for that purpose. You are right, collecting and operating vintage saws is a great hobby ! Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.

I am going to drag out my Xl and do a comparison as to the amount of vibration each one has. For serious hard work, I use my Mac 610's as they are really smooth by comparison. Fun to run a good variety of old saws !

That's a great running little saw there she really threw the chips on my old McCulloch I take a piece of water foam insulation or air conditioning foam insulation pipe ,, the right size inside and I take and put the old friction tape,, the cloth electrical tape around it to hold it in place and that works really good for my old McCullochs they vibrate just as bad I would guess I've not run a homelight

That is a good tip for insulating the bar. McCullochs, in most cases, vibrate less than the old Homelites, in my experience.

What a great day out in the woods! You have this saw dialed in, I could listen to it run all day long. The Super XL is one of the greatest chainsaws ever made! The saw will pull that 24" bar all day long, no problem. It's the perfect choice for the thick brush you were in and for bucking. It's nice to see that the pickaroon got some work in today. I agree, a woodsman's best friend. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it!

It had been a while since I had run this saw. It is a real performer for an old school saw, and was a good choice for this job. The pickaroon is just about indispensable for moving and pulling wood. I think I will get a hookaroon at some point also. Thanks for the great comment and for watching.

Other than the lack of AV and chain brake, those saws seem to mark a high point in chainsaw evolution.

When the XL 12 and Super XL were put on the market in 1964, they were the most modern and light saws on the market. They were very well built also, and lasted forever given proper maintenance. Most other saw companies copied the saw to try and maintain market share. Many failed.

Wow that's a runner you got that saw tuned perfect sounds like, I have two vintage homelites a 410 and just picked up last week a super xl 950 that one runs have yet to try the 410 the guy that sold me his xl 950 also offered me a poulan 45 so that one runs and i picked it up as well and get this just yesterday i bought a saw near our age i think built in the late 60 its a stihl brand model 090 with a 42 inch bar maybe the oldest saw i own, i hope it's not a wall hanger when it gets here.

Looks like you are doing a good job of collecting some vintage saws. The STIHL 090 is a saw that is hard to find, as they were used in commercial logging, and were just used up. STIHL doesn't sell any parts for them, but there are a fair amount of CHINESE replicrap parts for them, so there is a good chance it can be made a runner again.

The sun was out behind the area I was cutting, and the camera darkened up the video as a result. It started raining just after the last few cuts. The noise was the wind blowing. I really lucked out getting the tree cut up, as it was really windy and raining most of the day, and I got lucky with the short time available to do the video. Nice to get out and do some tree work.

Are McCullough timber bears good
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 5 ай бұрын
Mac Timber Bears are a great all around mid-sized saw. They are 54cc'c in displacement, can run a 24" bar with no problem, and are great for firewood cutting. The starters have a tendency to fail at times, but are easy to fix. Use the starter parts or starter assembly from a Mac Pro Mac 610. The plastic in the starter was cheapened up in the Timber bear to cut costs, but the earlier starters from the 610 was better materials, and not prone to failure. I have several Timber Bears, and they have given excellent performance over many years.

Mcculloch good saw but Homelights by far reliability longevity wise best.vibrate and shit of coarse but used them days on end thru many hurricanes on Long islandNew York even several Blizzards ice storms etc by the time all.the outer states and fat lazy Town and county workers woke had there coffee and dug out there 4 4 s with 38s on em we already had 48 hrs in straight yeah vibration lmfao

The old Homelites were tough to beat as far as reliability goes, but they do vibrate a lot. My MCcullochs have been outstanding for me in reliability, many with over 40 years of constant use, with no major repairs. Homelites were a small seller here in the PNW, and McCulloch was the king for many years. After having saws since 1980, it was only about 3 years ago I got my XL 12, and Super XL Homelites. Simply amazing!
