My dad always makes metaphor statements like this. One of my favorites is "End it on a bacon". When you're having your breakfast in the morning, always save a piece of bacon for the last bite so you savor the best part. If you're having a bad day art work, "end it on a bacon" do something that makes you feel good about what you've done to make your money today. If you had a scuffle with the wife "end it on a bacon" make sure you have a laugh or a kiss before you go to bed so you don't wake up with a sour feeling in the morning. "End it on a bacon".

I live 3 hours from Manhattan and I tell everyone, New York is a beautiful city and I recommend you visit it, especially if you love America, but honestly I've no idea how anyone could live there. That said, not all urban settings are awful, and you would be surprised how quiet a city can be at certain times (usually at night).

I was a little kid in the 60s and We never traveled the interstate. Of course they weren’t as vast as they are today but you just never knew what you would find. After 40 years of driving big truck on interstates, I’m spending the first few summers of retirement traveling the highways and byways

Couldn't agree more sir. Im 19 and love road trips and always try to take backroads when i can. It makes the drive so much more enjoyable and Ive met some good people and saw some good stuff doing so. Americas a beautiful country and I wouldnt know that if i just took the big roads like my parents always did.

I'm in my 60s now and how great it would be to be 19 again. In my 20's I did road trips on the back roads and that was awesome. Have fun but 2 lane roads are dangerous too if there is no shoulder and no where to go if someone crosses the centerline. Back when I was young cell phones didn't exist. People now are always texting, etc. And it's j u st so much more dangerous now. So be careful as you can.

Small towns can be incredible. Towns nobody ever heard of. Even today where corporate America is trying to make their billion dollar brands like Walmart, McDonalds, Bed Bath whatever, Target, etc, when you travel to new places you see they're all unique. They're also ever changing. I went to my hometown Halloween parade last October of 2021 and didn't recognize even 1 person. It was almost sad because as a kid thru highschool, I would've known dozens upon dozens. But it's nice that the world goes on, people change and things change, and the world keeps spinning.

@@bobbyb7127absolutely. When i went out west I had the option to drive on the site of the interstate and take Route 66. It was an AWFUL, small, badly lit road. Had so many potholes and such. I just took the interstate because it seemed loads safer. Once you’ve been on so Many unsafe back roads, it’s a relief to get on the interstate. Drive defensively and keep your distance. Be courteous. (:

I used to drive a pickup truck for work in Texas and I found out the reason I’d get home tense and stressed out was because of all the rushing on the interstates. I began to do my best to take the highways and backroads and it was so enjoyable. You get to really know the roads and small towns and eventually you know where to stop to eat some delicious meal and you get to meet and interact with very nice people. And if you pull off the road, sometimes just to make a call in your truck or check your tires or something, there’s usually someone slowing down or pulling over just to ask if you need any help. Especially when there’s no town near by. There are a lot of good people in this country. But you have to explore it and you’ll find out.

I completely agree with this advice. I won’t fly anymore, we take the train or we drive. It’s definitely interesting. It is unfortunate what they have done to a lot of America. Everything is the same, corporate. But when you drive, you can always find a town here and there that seems like you time traveled. It’s great.

2003, my Very Significant Other got sick. Within a week of diagnosis -- while selling everything -- we acquired a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to convert to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. We hit the road from Oregon with the vague goal of 'south'. Twenty-four months twenty-four thousand miles around South America. Alaska, Panama, all over North and Central America. Summers up rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes. Winters on isolated Baja beaches. . Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard. We prefer two-lanes... although puttering along on the freeway at 52mph in the slow lane can be ever so amusing.

You are lovely Joyce. I have not listened to this man Dwayne much yet, beside the video i put on here just now but it is true. A recent trip to visit a family member felt like too much to stay on the interstate. I had been looking at the map prior studying the area, and when i was able to do a 30 + mile stretch on the highway this time in my return home i took the time to get off the interstate. And found my self smiling and stopping at a waterfowl area with hundreds of cranes. When i left and started to continue there was a roadrunner by all the farm land and pueblo reservation land. It went from 75 mph with wind gusting up to 75mph to fairly quiet and calm. I was kinda looking for a sign from the universe as well as to what video of dwaynes to choose. Happy holidays

Well put and eloquently stated. The nation is being sped towards conflict on an information interstate that clearly wants to send people into head on collisions in favor or ratings and gawking eyeballs. The reality is off the main drag and you made me remember my dad and his obsession with driving through the south on state roads and detours through backwater reaches to avoid the interstates in Tennessee, Georgia and Florida as we travelled south from Chicagoland to Central Florida each summer to visit my grandfather. Great memories and a lesson for all in this...thanks for that!

Hey Dewayne, long time lurker here….. this topic resonates with me. I have been known to hop on one of my two bikes and take off for days riding the back roads of this magnificent country. I’m in New Mexico but it’s not unusual to find me ending up in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah or Arizona. It just depends which way my nose points on any given day. And you’re right, there is so much to see….. off the interstate. Both in reality and metaphorically. Great topic sir!

I used to work oil and gas projects in the middle of nowhere northern alberta. Decided going south, as I had no reason to rush. Drove hwy 40 from Cadomin to kaninaskis country. It's not a hwy, 2 lane at best the road is still there. Cross a continental divide that pushes the athabasca north 1600km dropping down into the cardinal River Valley. Fly fisherman's paradise. Bull trout country. You border jasper then Banff national parks all the way south. 10 years ago, never forget or regret it.

Maybe someday I’ll be able to get off the interstate and major highways and such, but currently I use them. Some of the benefits you described I actually haven’t encountered, like better gas mileage and such. But one thing that I’ve been really good at these last couple months is driving stress free when I go somewhere. It really is nice. I actually drive the speed limit and do not stress and rush and dodge just to get to work. Nope. I leave early, set cruise control to the speed limit, and I get to work. It’s been so much better for me. Why did I let myself get stressed out before I even got to work? The people on the interstate can be crazy. The best thing I can do is not BE one of the crazies on the road and drove with courtesy. “Be the change you want to see.” 😊

Wise advice. Now that I"m retired, I avoid interstates whenever possible. When working, I used my vacation time to travel by motorcycle with a few good friends and my wife. I saw the country in a completely different way than when I was racing the clock to meetings. I had fun but not much stress. I even enjoyed getting lost, sometimes on purpose. It's about the journey, not the objective.

Love this. Is only the second video I’ve seen but can see me spending some time watching many more. Makes ya just want to sit around a fire, smoke a cigar, sip on some bourbon and listen to all the stories I’m sure he has…
