You don't want to get locked up in a Mexican jail ... I promise you that!

This is very scary! Thank you for sharing because there are tons of expats in Mexico that want everyone to believe that Mexico is paradise as long as you follow the rules. That is clearly not the case, you can get caught up in the same way that folks get profiled in the United States. Everyone needs to hear your story because if it can happen to you....it can happen to anyone! To be clear, I am an American that was considering moving to Mexico however, I am doing so with caution. The cost of living is definitely cheaper but this is not the paradise that everyone proclaims it to be and I rather be on American soil fighting than to be "Locked Up Abroad." I'm glad you are safe my brother!

Unfortunately, no place is paradise... We gotta make our own paradise. Crime and mis-treatment happens any and everywhere. This experience certainly won't keep me out of Mexico at all. Like any new place, you gotta learn the rules and the ropes and it can take a while ... Any one of us can be walking down the street in the US and get profiled or attacked or shot at by anyone ... You can go into a theater and a gunman come and kill 50 people ... Drugs can get planted by a police officer ... It happens. At the end of the day, I'm the one who went through the gate and as unreasonable as the lady was, I'm the one who walked onto her property. It's known by the locals not to go inside anyones gate without permission (obviously i didn't know this, but now I do). This incident has not made me see mexico in any type of negative light. The benefits here far outweigh the benefits of living back in the US ... For healthcare, if they can't do something here, it's easy to hop a plane back to the US ... For what you're saving by living here, a plane ride back to the states for treatment is a drop in the bucket. What I find is most people come here with a poor plan and when things go south they find reasons to blame the 'place' instead of themselves for their lack of planning... Moving to a foreign country is a big undertaking. Values, beliefs and mindset will have to totally be changed and most folks simply aren't willing to do that for the longterm to establish a more permanent life abroad. This is the part most folks won't tell you ... They poorly plan, or run out of money, or get sick and have to go back home ... Nothing to do with the country itself. We each must define what paradise is for us ... These krazy stories like the one I have are not the norm, just like shootings in movie theaters and at supermarkets don't happen on the regular, but they do happen. One-off stories like these shouldn't deter anyone from considering a move to a country they've properly researched.

@@MoveAbroadandThrive I totally agree..this was your bad for not understanding Mexican Law, and you speak truth that Paradise is what you make it however, things may have been different had you not been a black man entering that gate by mistake and yes...in the US it could have ended tragically. My point is not to bash Mexico because I actually love the culture and most of the people but...profiling, discrimination, racism as well as all the other isms exist there just as they do here. Many will fear you and have a distrust because of how you have been portrayed in the media. Your experience needed to be shared so others do not make the same mistake. And I recommend which Im sure you have, building a relationship with a Mexican national so you can better understand the laws and how they feel about the black expats in their country. I say all of this, with a clear understanding of the benefits of being there vs here. I've traveled and lived in many places both overseas and in the US. Paradise is a mindset as you retreat to your cost effective accommodations, inexpensive healthcare as well as affordable food choices but never forget you are still a black man in a foreign land that many will never respect or understand (I got poetic on you..lol) Glad your safe and keep doing what you do!

@B G Actually, not "exactly." Jails hold innocent people who have been convicted on nothing like Cartess. Theoretically any of us could be arrested and held until things got sorted out. It's pretty terrifying to think of being treated like that (you should watch his full video on his experience).

There’s a reason so many people from other countries want to come to the United States of America. I see all these young black KZfaq going to Mexico and Colombia and clubbing with the local ladies, not working ladies, back in the day that was crazy. Remember in Mexico and a lot of other countries, you guilty until you have a enough money to pay your way out of prison. I live in a nice city in San Diego, California and when I first moved here, I would get pulled over by the police all the time, just because I’m Hispanic and driving a older car. I told my dad who’s at the time was in his early seventies and he told me “ you make a lot of money buy a new car and don’t dress like a poor wetback” I remember when I was in the United States Navy and going on liberty in a foreign country the captain would tell us dress like proud United States sailors and not like you dress to cut their lawns. Stay safe

@M J There are tall people all over Latin America. I have a relative already at 6'6" and still growing. Did you not see Mexico beating the USA in men's basketball the other day? Do you think Mexico would have been able to accomplish that victory with only 5 foot tall players who are not in good shape on the court? Of course not. Yes I know it was not the USA's best roster. Roster adjustments will have be made by both the USA and Mexico by next year. But a win is a win. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a616ZaZquqqcYWg.html

Jail in those third world countries is the last place you want to be if your a foreigner, they all have unhabitable conditions. Our jails are like a resort compared to those jails in Mexico and Brazil, and other countries.
