More like Nobonusaga's Ambonusition, right? Some of these longer, more in-depth games are going to need a little extra time before science can science them properly. So let's take a long, hard look at Nobunaga's Ambition for the NES and rank it!

The spectre of Nobunaga's Ambition II, and Nobunaga's Ambition: Lord of Darkness loom ominously.

I think we are slowly seeing that you are a mad scientist. No sane person would play this kind of strategy game on the NES.

I personally don't mind the sports games being peppered throughout. Something about mixing genres in the same video is kinda fun.

Only three games were compatible with the Famicom keyboard and cassete data recorder which were bundled together. Excitebike, Wrecking Crew and Mach Rider. Between that and ROB, Nintendo very early on cemented its policy of bringing out peripherals and immediately dropping support. Remember that official microphone that only worked with Animal Crossing on the Wii and a handful of third party sports games

still crazy that’s all they did with the keyboard

@@GreatistheWorld It came with a copy of Basic for Famicom which you could write extremely simple and slow games with. They had some examples and for a while Japanese magazines would print listings for games for you to type in.

Of all the companies to have survived since the 8 bit era, it always blows my mind (in a good way!) that a niche strategy publisher like Koei was one of them.

As I said on the Action 52 review, thank you for your sacrifice Jeff. As someone who played StarCraft 64 because I didn’t have access to a PC to play it on, I understand the frustration of playing a game meant for keyboard and mouse on a Nintendo controller… a NES strategy game like this seems like a fucking mess. Impressive that they did it, but in no way the ideal way to play it.

Something not mentioned a lot here is that this generation of games expected you to read the manual. We're used to in-game tutorials being the standard for the past 20 years, but in these days, especially for strategy games, the manual was essentially required. This isn't to say I don't trust the science. Jeff is the master. BUT he's playing a lot of games totally raw that would have probably faired better having read the instructions.

This is an apt point especially given how severe a bottleneck the 2-button controller was for game design on the NES. The most advanced titles utilize input combos that will elude blind "grab-n-go" players despite being relatively friendly to play.

I'm much more of a Romance of the Three Kingdoms guy, but I've never had the guts to play the old stuff on the NES before, so I haven't seen much of KOEI's stuff from this era. Nobunaga's Ambition already makes little sense to me, but you add in all the console limitations, and this looks baffling to try and play. I had a good time with this, and I appreciate the science. Only like 9 more of these KOEI games to go on the NES!

Important to remember how out of reach computers were at this time for most people. Even a janky-ass NES control scheme would've been appreciated by people who couldn't afford/understand computers. I bet a certain audience would've been thrilled to have this available.

I just picture some Dad in the 80s getting way into this when everyone else is asleep. Chasing it with some Kurosawa LaserDiscs to maximize the vibe. But yeah, this was a weird one. Kind of interested in the franchise but not ready to jump in with both feet.

Can't wait for the Dragon Warrior 3 & 4 in depth looks, interested to see how the science weighs the storyline ambition and overall influence those games have against the lack of really any visual/presentation upgrades from the first game. In my heart they are both top 20 games on the system but I haven't played the NES versions in a long time

Bonus episodes with more historical "science data and research" for extra tidbits on titles that help the NES games get listed and why. For example Double Dragon 2 and the porting comparisons. The opening scene where blam marriane gets blasted in the beginning. Seeing that and showing why the nes version failed. Or the music in phantasy zone and the gameplay differences. Odd ball context to show why the port failed or succeeded. I hope I am making sense. I would love that content.

I remember wanting this game when I was a kid. Trying to imagine myself at 10 trying to figure this out hurts my brain. Then again, as a kid I had a lot more time on my hands and I learned how to play AD&D, so…. Actually, Jesus, I was 14 in 1989. I always think of the last few years of the 80’s as me being like 10-12.
