I keep coming back to the most emotional and crucial part of this movie: When Barbie tells Ken that maybe his identity isn't what kind of house he has or what girl he's dating, that he is just himself and there's nothing wrong with him. To see that Ken was overjoyed by taking a moment to love himself was really empowering.

The best part of this song is that it starts out as a technical “friend zone anthem”. Because throughout the entire movie, he is just Ken. He places his value entirely upon Barbie’s affection. And he sees himself as a hardcore fuckup because she doesn’t reciprocate. But as the song goes on, the idea of him being “Just Ken” is refined into “I am enough”. He realizes that Barbie’s affection isn’t the only aspect of his sense of self. It starts out as Ken beating himself up for failing to have Barbie’s affection. But then realizing that whether or not she’s interested in him, that doesn’t matter. He’s still Ken. And that’s enough. And he’s still great at doing stuff. Barbie, while feminist (and greatly argued I might add), is deeply humanist. It delves into the complexities of human existence, for everyone.

It's the same thing in writing. Writing something that's sad? Bro, you just write something that's relatable and painful. Writing a story in which a young child's mother falls down the stairs and you spend the entire time dealing with how little Timmy copes with it? That's sad. I don't even need to address any specific qualities of writing here! Like, whether something is dramatic or sad is honestly 90% about *content* - but you can't get to comedy through content. A few facts for anyone who doesn't get Ken's position in the new Barbie movie from a Barbie collector who got her first doll way back in 1962. From the day the doll was introduced, Ken has always existed simply as Barbie's side piece - nothing more, nothing less. Barbie is the star; Ken has always been there as a supporting player with no other real role. PERIOD. He's a background player, he has never really had any storylines in Barbie world, he's just THERE. The trailer portrays him pretty accurately. As the movie tagline goes, Barbie is "everything." And as the song says he's "just Ken." That said, this is THE power ballad of the YEAR!!!!

I honestly don’t even think he was villain. Hear me out, ken was objectively treated bad in the relationship. He had no friends, and his “girlfriend” never gave him any attention. He was trapped. Than he comes into the real world and suddenly people see he him for a real person. In a weird sense, he’s just doing a non toxic version of feminism in a womens world. Some might say what about the patriarchy? I don’t think he really even knew what it was, he said “I thought patriarchy was just about horses, I lost interest after”. Although it seems funny, really consider that line. What do horses represent? Freedom. They represent being free and able to be yourself untrapped. I think he just wanted to be free. Poor guy
