I drove up to Dallas a few months ago to take care of my mother while she recovered from a bad case of the flu.
Spending a few weeks quiet weeks in the house I grew up in, I became entranced in the Twitch Mister Rogers marathon.
To my surprise, I kept tuning in to watch episodes of the show.
Something about the quiet, meditative, sincerity was deeply moving to me.
Growing up I had vague memories of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, but watching his program now as an adult and as a filmmaker I was fascinated by the degree of sophistication and discipline Rogers brought to his show.
Learning more about his thinking and his background revealed to me a deeply thoughtful man. A man who had found a way to work completely against the grain of the medium and the culture.
As filmmakers there is something inspiring about such an example. Someone totally uninterested in spectacle or ubiquity. Someone interested in depth, and in forming significant human connections.
I came to see Fred Rogers’ cinema as an act of sincere communication from one individual to another. His neighborhood was a space where silence and kindness are valued, not because they get good ratings, but because they are essential to our experience as human beings.

This is beautiful. I was born in just 1999 so all I got were reruns and now I have only vague memories of the show. Recently I started watching it again. And I got the same feeling you did, I was fascinated. And it made me cry because he was so pure. I can truly grasp what he was doing and things he says now. And its truly moving.

I live in the UK, so this wasn't on TV when I was young. I was raised by abusive parents, and I so wish I had someone like Fred Rogers in my life.

Me too. I was abused as a kid and I always wished I could go right through the screen and be with Mr. Rogers. He liked me just the way I was. Fat and ugly and he did not call me a dunce because I failed geometry . I felt he was my only friend. And now during the lock down I find myself watching these shows and find them very comforting. Just visiting my old friend Fred. Going to see how coins are made and singing songs that make me cry and visiting the neighborhood of make believe and not finding it boring at all.

The part where Mr Rogers is singing with the kid really got to me. Damn that was beautiful Edit: I typed that as I saw it and at the end where the same kid came on stage later in the video and Fred looked so genuinely happy to see him, I can in fact say that I cried again

My calming truthful sage. My first friend I admire that he makes me safe in an unsafe world. It lasts a lifetime. 'What is essential is invisible to the eye" visionary. Ahead of his time. One of a kind. I learned this at 5. 🦉🐱 Simple truth, he had sweetness of heart ❤️ it's him I like.

That quote about "what is essential is invisible to the eye" is a famous quote from the book "The Little Prince", though it might be just a coincidence. It is a common sentiment.

My favorite part was him saying basically forget the numbers be here in the moment and connect 1 to 1 thats what is important. I think that is the worst part of this digital age of smart phones where people disconnect from the real people and things relaruonships around them is profoundly sad.
