Testing some PPU FMJ and Winchester Expanding Point ammo in .25acp. Does this caliber lack the energy to be an effective defense round? Heavy clothing ballistic gel test using a Phoenix Arms HP25A.

Do not underestimate a .25 auto just watch the episode of Hawaii Five-0 "Dairy of a Gun". A Saturday Night Special is inadvertently passed from person to person and in each instance causes death. The final person is a true criminal who uses it to stage a series of hold ups causing Five-0 and the Hawaii police to finally corner the crook on a dead-end mountain road. The crook pins down the police at a distance with fire from the .25 but they distract the crook long enough for a tactical team to maneuver around him and get a shot from a distance.

.25 is a funny round. About 23 yrs ago, worked in a trauma center. .25s were still one of the most commonly used guns for certain criminal demographics, so a majority of the gsvs we would see were hit with them. Most of them fatal, so.. if used within a few feet, they were certainly effective.

I used to be involved with teaching folks for their carry permit. I never had a student volunteer to be shot with a 25. The 25 cal does have the advantage of being more reliable than a 22, due to being center fire. Because most encounters are up close and personal, if you unload a magazine of 25 into the bad guy it will probably end the encounter. As the old saying goes a 25 in the hand, beats the 45 you left in the truck every time. Enjoy the channel.

as a custom leather holster maker, I can tell you I make 5-10 pocket holsters a week for these little 25's. Over 15 years, that is a lot of people carrying classic 25's.

I like that the .25 is a center fire instead of a rim fire. What i dislike is its penetration. I saw some guys shooting at an old stop sign a couple decades back. Their 22lr was going through the sign but the .25 was bouncing off. The 25 was being fired from a smaller beretta pistol and the 22 lr was from a ruger that had a a 4 or 5 inch barrel if memory serves. Maybe that was what made the difference. If i had to choose 22lr or 25 acp though, i would choose the 25 because it is center fire and i have had issues in the past with bad rim fire cartridges.

You do such a good job with the whole process here from melting the gel and having nice clear blocks to pulling the projectiles to show whether they expanded or not to measuring them if they did. I appreciate all of it cause sometimes just looking at the gel one might think it looks like a good wound cavity when it was just a tumble. Your process is spot on letting everyone know what you are doing and why. This channel is a wealth of information. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.

My great aunt kept a .25 auto in her nightstand drawer for over 50 years. She passed away about 18 months back, and now I've got it in my safe. From what I understand, she inherited it and was never in a financial position to buy something else. Luckily she never needed it...that we know of.

I have a little 1970 Colt 25 hasn't been out of the safe in probably 20-25 years. So ammo is older than that. As always appreciate all the videos keep them coming 👍

Use the full metal jacket for penetration, 12 to 14 inches , 82 foot pounds maximum .

My first 25 auto was a Raven, way back in 1983. My wife got it for me new in the box for Christmas that year. It quickly became my carry gun. Now this was the days before micro 380's and 9's. I ended up picking up several of the Ravens over the next few years. They sold new around here for $50- and $20-$30 used. I kept them oiled and clean and never had a problem with any of them. The 25's sure had a place back in the day. I currently only own one little 25 pistol. It's an ole cheap Davis 2 shot derringer. I don't use it. I got it for a heck of a deal and it's nice to have a 25 caliber handgun in my collection. I honestly have more $ in the box of ammo I bought to have with it than I do the gun ! Lol.

This is why you're the man, testing out these (somewhat) obscure calibers and from guns most of us will never own. I think the lamest thing about guys I meet at the range are that they don't really seem to love GUNS, they might love GLOCKS or SIG, but don't even bother talking to them about a SCCY, Taurus or ANY revolver b/c they're typically oblivious. Your attitude towards is quite refreshing, keep it up!

Once upon a time the .25 ACP and .22 LR were the best commonly available semi-auto pistols you could fit in your pocket. Those little bullets can be lethal if put in the right place. Though for defensive purposes the lack of energy might result in a perpetrator being unable to even feel when they are getting hit by one of these. They might initially think that your shots are missing or get this notion that they are invulnerable. With .380 ACP pocket pistols available now, that is the minimum I'd go with. Even then I'd prefer that as a backup to carrying something a bit more powerful.

The Phoenix Arms .25auto is the real deal. That is a nice performing small pistol there. Nice to see how the .25 Auto does ammo performs. No .25auto here. Anyway good test and commentary. Like the new radar set up. I’m sure you will get it to work out perfect in your testing. Be safe. 🇺🇸😎🇺🇸😎🇺🇸

.25 should be more popular, .32(ACP and S&W/H&R). Low recoil, easy to shoot and great for new shooters.

Thanks for testing these. It is nice to see the velocity as advertised. I keep those expanding points as the primary load for my .25 and seeing the extra penetration they provide I think I will stick with them even if they do do not expand. As far as the glare on the camera lens try a polarized filter, or cheat with a sunglass lens taped to the camera.
