We show you a quick method to measure your coco coir's EC to make sure that you are using the purest product available. We compare Mother Earth with Ugro using reverse osmosis water. It's worth pointing out that the best coco coir doesn't always have the lowest EC-that's because some manufacturers use buffering agents to aid with nutrient uptake-but this test gives you an initial "snapshot" of your coco growth media so you have some idea of what you're dealing with.

I bought Mother Earth in the 5kg blocks and it had 550 ppm's. I had to wash it 3 times before it got under 100. Then I buffered it in cal mag and sensibloom coco a & b, mixed in 1/3 perlite, good to go. You can't buy antthing better, just do it yourself.
@diegogumucio1540
@diegogumucio1540 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Thats because when they decompress it with water they wash it again. 550 ppm is not so bad, if you reacj around 200 150 ppm its okay for most plants.

I go through about 100 bags of Mother Earth per month. Sometimes its 10ppm, sometimes its all the way up to 80. I also use a 2-1 ratio when doing my slurry tests. I run straight Coco in all of our plants and flush with just 100ppm cal mag 1x week. NO issues. We also don't water to runoff when feeding. 2yrs with this method and 2000 plants at all times always seem happy. As for Coco buffers. I hit my tables with SM90 at 2ml gal between harvest and 5ml gal of enzymes, 400ppm cal mag.

Not to cause any issues here but,I live in the Caribbean and not all coconut trees are grown by the ocean. There ARE a few inland farms all over the place and some folks have trees on their properties that are well away from the ocean/beaches.

i use hot water on u-gro brand coco, i get fizzing bubbles and 400 ppm water initially. just washed another brand ecogrow with cold water and althou i didnt take initial ppm it still had 100 ppm after 10 washes so my tip is to use hot water, it dilutes whatever is in it a lot better. 400 ppm kills seeds. yes. just washed that coco with hot water that i previously washed with cold water and i got lots of brown water with nutes eventhou with cold water it was clear. hot water definitely works in un-nuting and cold doesnt work at all.

How often should I feed in coco? I have 2 gallon pots with hydroton on the bottom, coco, then topped with hydroton. I transplanted 3 days ago. Forgot to check my ppms. I checked yesterday, they were at 1200. I panicked, I flushed them, dropped them down to 270 ppms. When should I feed again. I don’t want to hur5 them!

@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 жыл бұрын
carpii yes, they are essentially the same thing. I recommend all growers use EC (electrical conductivity) to measure the strength of their nutrient solution as you don't have to deal with conversion factors - you just deal in milisiemens or microsiemens.

ive only used botanicare coco, but i found the stuff in the bags to be WORSE!!! i actually got bugs and shit in my coco because the store i bought it from stored their stuff outside... i always got higher PPM readings from the initial salt wash too. i have MUCH better luck using botanicare's 5 kilo bricks. they cant be stored outside so you know they're safe as far as bugs. i think i had springtails in my stuff which dont sound but, but are still unwanted when growing indoors.

Just tap water. Im in the uk so our water might be diffrent from yrs.. i dont need it for tap water? Whats the deal with buffered coco coir? Does that mean its been treated with epsom salts anyway? Still hunting for answers on this. Thanks again!
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
Buffered tends to mean pre-charged with calcium nitrate which fills up a lot of cation exchange sites in the coco coir and so it doesn't hold on to and deprive the plant of the calcium it needs.
@loadapish
@loadapish 8 жыл бұрын
+Everest Fernandez (Just4Growers) ok it sounds like i dont need cal mag then. im guessing you only need cal mag for un buffered coco coir and particularly for ro water. my tap water will likely have calcium and magnesium in it and the coco coir is buffered so i think im ok without it then. still scratching my head but thanks for yr time!
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
If your tap water is 0.3 mS or above then I wouldn't bother with any CalMag supplement. Just go straight in with your coco coir hydroponic nutrients.
